I have an '06 Uly. I bought a pair of the '07 plastic filler pieces that fit under the seat for purely cosmetic reasons because they filled the gaps and made it neat and tidy. Anyway, even in the worst British summer for years, the fan was on most of the time that the bike was running. So yesterday, (it was one of the warmest days in the past 2 months here), I took the plastic filler plates off. The result? The fan didn't run half as much!!! | ||

Checked again today, there is much more hot air being expelled without the filler plates as far as I can feel just by placing my hand near the gaps. Very unscientific, I admit, but the fan doesn't come on for as long either. | ||

Only change I noticed with them was the seat got hotter. | ||

Hi Froggy, yes, I agree, my seat is cooler too! As I mentioned, it was a non-scientific observation, (just a seat of the pants thing!!!! LOL). I didn't measure engine temperature, so I can't comment on that. I simply observed that without the filler plates, more hot air was expelled from the gaps below the seat, (obvious really, with the plates/obstructions removed), and the fan didn't come on as often when I ride my bike. | ||

The filler plates were originally intended to deflect the heat away from our thighs, right? Not to reduce the engine heat... Do they reduce the "thighburn"? (sounds like a place in Scotland: "Aye, take a left at Thighburn and you'll see a lovely pub for your dinner...") | ||

Yes, they were supposed to deflect heat from our thighs. I just think they might restrict the flow and hinder heat dispersal. By the way Hooper, nice choice of roads, particularly the one from Loch Ness !!! | ||

Longdog...I did a solo ride around Scotland a few years ago (feels like last week) while I was going through a rough breakup...it solved the problem. It was the best adventure of my life...I'd only been riding for about 15 months -I didn't tell anyone. That stretch of A87 from the Kyle of Lochalsh (I stayed in Plockton in a B&B run by someone who could have been a double for Mrs. Doubtfire that night) was just spectacular, especially with the wind and the rain (it was October). I also had a blast rolling around Dufftown and the Speyside. I'm headed to London, the Cotswolds, and hopefully Wales in mid-October, but not on two wheels, alas. I've got lots of heritage in these areas, and it feels like a homecoming. (whoops, this was a thread to talk about Uly heat) Thank god for heated handgrips... Not sure yet - we're staying with friends in Kinver, West Midlands, so we'd most likely be taking a one day/one night jump into Wales. If you've got a "must see/must do" suggestion, I appreciate it. | ||

SEAL THE GAP! Most of the heat that is radiating onto the right thigh is hot air escaping along the seam between the seat and the frame. If you seal this gap (I used HVAC tape), it will reduce 90% of the convection. Heat will no longer be the problem that it currently is. | ||

Gsilvernale, I see where you're coming from, but my observation was that my fan runs far less without the filler plates. I would guess that with the gaps sealed, that my fan would run more? I don't have too much of an issue with the "hot thigh" problem, just hold my leg away slightly when I'm riding. Hooper, if you only have the opportunity to have 0ne/one night in Wales, then I suggest you head for Snowdonia and the National Park and Mount Snowdon. Take a trip up there on the Snowdon Railway from Llanberis, then head for Beddgelert and go around the Llyn Peninsular. This would be quite enough in the time you mention. Shame really, because the West Wales coast is beautiful too, especially the Pembroke National Park.} | ||

I have an 08, live in a Hot climate (South Carolina), and my fan has only come on twice in 4000 miles - while riding. It always comes on when I stop. | ||

Hmmm...... maybe fan runtime is another example if Uly individuality!!!!! Mine runs through the British winter too!!! |
