folks-I tried the search function and could not find the info on changing the drive belt alongside the road. Several weeks ago someone posted a nice write up w/pics on how to do it and I am headed out on a week long trip and would like to copy this post and take it along with my spare belt. Could someone please point me to this post. I have the shop manual but their version is more complex than it needs to be. Thanks |

Pull the lower belt guard, pull the rear fender, loosen the axle, remove the front pulley cover, remove the swing arm brace, remove belt, reinstall in reverse order. |

Rear fender does not need to be removed. Remove two bolts (IIRC) and deflect it enough to sneak the belt through. I also remove the idler pulley which makes installation of the new belt easier, but most do not. |

With the lower guard and front pulley guard off, the rt side fender bolts out, and the swing arm piece out, loosen the axle to remove and install the belt, then I just backed off the nuts on the idler pulley and moved it outward, put the belt on and work the idler pulley back into the belt. |

I also remove the idler pulley which makes installation of the new belt easier, but most do not. The idler can be a b!tch to get off if the studs have corroded. It does make belt installation much easier if you can get it off. |
