The actuator for my 08XT's muffler valve stopped working sometime in the last week. It is stuck open, noticeable noise increase on idle/low rpm. I've run with the airbox cover off, it does not move (the actuator). If you move it carefully by hand clockwise the valve will move towards the closed position, once running it will open again and stay there.

I can't tell yet by seat of the pants analysis whether it's negatively affecting the performance yet or not. I do miss the quiet putting when in certain areas where I'd like to maintain a near silent footprint.

I did cheat and open the "little black box" and believe one of the gears is misaligned. I tried briefly to make it right but not sure how it's supposed to be so put it all back together. Is there any longterm Uly health issues if I just leave it for now? I really don't want to have to make another appointment at the dealer right now. So I'm wondering from you guys who've messed with their Ulys if I can just leave this for now or should I arrange to get it fixed? Consider that it's an 08 and I've got no "spy" software to tweak it for open running.

It won't hurt anything, but I would get it warrantied while you can. With it open, it will hurt your midrange.

Hi Ulyranger,

Mine failed a few months back, so I just wired it open, and actually prefer it that way now. To me it sounds better and runs lower speeds (15-20mph) much better. I haven’t noticed any mid-range issues, but then I have a custom EEPROM and I fattened up fuel maps, so perhaps that all comes into play.

I plan to take it in this winter for a new actuator while its still under warranty, though.

.

I run mine open with a race ECM. I like it better than paired up with the race pipe.
