Been lurking for some time. Lots of info here. I am about to get my second bike and the XB12X is at the top of the list. Most of my riding is commuting to work, a 136 mile round trip that has 130 mile of interstate. Will the Uly get me at least 45 mpg on this commute? I've searched, but most mpg posts I see are not really the type of ride I'm going to be doing. If it helps, I ride ~75mph.

Thanks

I have an XB12XT and from my experience I'd say yes. Cruising at 75 gets me better than 45mpg, more like 48+.

x
i use mine to commute 110 mi a day, i can squeek out two round trips on a tank @75 to 80 mph although i must admit the last twenty miles i'm sweating it out. 220 mi it took 4.2 gals. mine is an 06 i bought new in aug of 07. 12k no problems, on my third rear tire, original front tire. i'd say go for it.

Wow. I'm currently riding a EX500 and I go 215 miles on 4.1 gallons. Obviously the Uly will be a more stable, comfortable mount. Seems a little strange that I could increase my cc's by 60% and still get the same mileage. Tire wear seems a little quick though. I get ~10k out of my tires now.

An 06/07 Uly will get that kind of mileage. The 08 models didn't get quite as much, though that is supposed to be fixed with an updated computer flash. If you get an 08, make sure it has the latest flash. The 09s shouldn't need anything done to them.

You can switch tires to get better life. I run Continental Road Attacks, and get between 8 and 10k.

I love the Uly, and Buell's - to bits.

But to be perfectly honest?! - 130mile interstate commute is a bit of a waste. : (

Sorry - never thought I'd say it...

Unless of course you plan on wheeling through the traffic! : ) : )

Then again, if you love it - get it (and you won't care in that case about mileage!)

Xwelder, check out this website (thanks to 08Uly) for a better idea of what you can expect for mileage - http://www.njdot.us/buell/index.shtml

My 2008 fuel economy went up a but with the reflash but it's still not as good as my 2000 X1.

The best my XB12X has gotten so far is in the mid-40's
My X1 with 83,000 miles still gets low fifties very consistently.

My '06 Uly will get 50MPG on the slab.

Jim, Where are you getting the Conti's from? If I could get that kind of mileage I'd order a few sets.

Riding 80 mph indicated, my '06 Ulysses gets 50MPG on the freeway.

I did a 1400 mile ride from Dallas last week and the best milage I got was between Needles and Barstow(california desert). I'm on a 2008 xb12x and was able to do that 150 mile stretch at just about 49mpg's. I drove 75mph and it was about 115 degrees out there.
By the way, if you can avoid it dont put gas in Needles, its 5 bucks a gallon there.

xwelder,
I commute 74 round trip, most of it on I-95, ~75-80MPH, the remainder blasting through urban streets. Unmodified '06 Uly, 49 to 50MPG all the time.

Thanks for all the replies. It is what I thought but I like to hear real numbers from people who know.

Bigkuri...What do mean by it being a waste?

Bigkuri probably means that the bike is a bit of a waste just for commuting. It has so much power and potential and utility. Almost like commuting to work in a Ferrari. Not that it is a bad thing, but when you’re stuck bumper to bumper with something that will do 0-60 in 3 seconds with a quarter mile in the low 11's, you tend to want to shoot someone : )

Yup - just that. Especially if you are stuck in slow traffic : (

Personally if I was in a huge commute like yours, on the slab, then I'd get something that is not a race-horse... : D (like a BMW GS - they love commuting...). ; )

I commute on my XT in rush hour traffic. I rode it to Wisconsin for Homecoming. I rode it the length of Vermont Route 100 last weekend. I've put almost 10,000 miles on it since mid-May.
Go for it. You'll love it.

I won't be using it solely for commuting, but mostly. I live in North GA, so weekends are spent on some great roads and I'd like to add some FS roads to my rides. Unfortunately, i have room but for one motorcycle as my wifes takes up the other slot. Otherwise, I'd have a much sportier bike AND a commuter like an old concours. So, yeah, I'm looking for a bike that does it all. Ulysses seems to come close.
