Not sure what to think here. I brought home my new Uly this weekend after a frustrating sales process. As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm not thrilled with my dealer and didn't feel confident in their understanding of the Buell. Due to my lack of confidence, I went over the bike with I got home (I know, should have done it at the dealership). I noticed that the oil level was low (below the min mark) by about .5 quart. My question is do you think that the new engine could absorb .5 quart in the 30 miles home? Any concern that there'd be any damage on a new engine (had 6 miles on it when I left the dealer) from low oil?

I am guessing that there was no damage done. That sounds like about the right level once it gets broken in. I would add some oil and get out there and do some riding. Like 50+ miles and then recheck it. If it has dropped considerably then you may have a problem. I wouldn't worry too much until then.

It sounds simple, but be sure that you are checking the oil level according to the manual.
Too many times people think the bike needs to be upright to check the engine oil, or they check it well after the bike cools down.
If you are sure the correct procedure is being followed, fill it up only to the 2nd or 3rd X on the dipstick; any higher than that, and it just gets sucked into the airbox.

It was checked on the side stand while it was still hot, but that's a good thought. I'm so thankful that it can be checked while on the stand, it'd be a real trick to try to check it upright!

Just paranoid with a new engine. I put 200+ miles on it this weekend, and it ran beautifully with no drop in oil level, so I'm sure it's fine.

Try the following. You may be seeing the same problem... It's not really low on oil, just inaccurate reading.

About 7,300 on my '08 with Syn3...

What I notice... If I do a hot check ~5 min after a hard ride I get a very low reading (bottom of the dipstick) then if I start it again and let it idle for a couple minutes then shut it off and check the level again ~5 minutes later all is ok at (2) XX's. Seems like it wet sumps a little?

Consumes very little oil between changes.

Motoaddict - Welcome to Badweb and Buell.

Sorry your dealer is less than great. The service manual for these bikes is great, if you want to avoid the dealer in the future.

As to the oil level, the readings vary wildly, and are affected by things such as suspension adjustment.

The standard recommendation is that when you change your oil, add 2.5 quarts, run the bike, and look at the dipstick. Wherever it reads is "full." It may not read anywhere close to the top of the dipstick when you do this.

Jlnance has fixed the problem for you --really, he has.

Add 2.5 quarts at your next change, get it hot, check it. That's the full level and the dipstick reading can, and will, be all over the map.

Thanks for the feedback. My SS was the same way, all over the stick. My initial concern here was that the stick was dry except the bottom tip when I got home. Other than the dry metal grinding noise when I exceed 1500 rpm, it's fine...

Kidding, all's well so far.

That's how I do it too. My Uly is full at 2X's
