I also use the heat deflectors but IMHO you must seal them otherwise the heat blows out around them.

I don't use heat blankets because I let the heat exit back at the under-seat tray where I bore a bunch of holes for the heat to escape and keep water out of there with pvc street elbows. Removed the bungee hook hole covers also to let air flow through.

Seat dam has holes bored into it to let warm air flow through.

Rear brake reservoir removed and I just plugged end of hose which is under no more pressure than just atmospheric. Have never had to add brake fluid and brake has worked just fine since I did this last year. You can see the plug and it hanging it a couple of the photos. I am not recommending this method but only showing how I handled the brake fluid reservoir situation.

I do feel heat that radiates from the frame tank but I do not have heat blowing out and cooking my leg. I have 16,000 miles and original fan on my 06'. I monitor my oil temp with a dip stick thermometer and even when it is in the high 90's out the oil tops out a 200 F degrees. I use Mobil 1 auto 15W50. When the temps get to 70 or below the fan rarely if ever goes on except at shutdown.

+1 for Odie's blanket and an RSS! I had almost given up riding the Uly in warm weather before the changes!

Hi Kuuud,
Thanks for your response and I have one question, you use the initials RSS, does that mean right side scoop? Others have recommended that too but it sure is expensive ($229). I hate to spend alot of money on problems that Buell should have addressed themselves. Thanks again,

RSS is right side scoop. You will get varying opinions on it from everybody. Some swear by it like Kuuud and others say it is useless.

Some data:

Surface temp of stock header, idling after 11 mile commute: 420 F. Surface temp of Jet Hot coated header, same circumstance: 325 F.

Surface temp of frame, just behind 'knee curve' after lining frame with Thermotec: left 110F, right 115F. Temp at frame-footpeg mount interface: left 115F, right 125F. I neglected to check this before lining the frame so I don't have a quantitative comparison. Seems cooler though.

Temp of air blowing from right side subframe opening. Engine off, fan running, 160F. Stock plastic duct, rear m/c reservoir in standard location.

Temperatures checked with a thermocouple.

I had an rss and i loved the look. It absolutely made the fan run less and my right leg was a bit cooler. I was not however convinced the fan not running was a good thing. It seemed to me that more heat was sitting up high on the heads. My seat felt a bit warmer also. I really noticed the fan coming on a lot after I took it of. I could make all kinds of trips around town and the fan wouldn't run till the engine was shut down, now it's back to on for the shortest little jaunts.

I have a RSS, Odie's blanket, and the '07 scoops. But what made the HUGEST difference was getting the mixture out of the 'hellishly lean' area. Seems like I read something about a Buell solution to tuning the DDFI3 for the '08s+ somewhere...

The only time I tried something like a RSS it caused my oil temps to rise as measured at the swingarm oil tank. It was not a purchased RSS but this http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/363918.html

A note on the temperature readings from me. Those were taken on a day where the ambient temp was 107F.

I've continued to check temps and have a few interesting notes. Immediately after shut down, with the fan still running, the air temp in the right side subframe air deflector is over 160F, air just behind the fan, alongside the shock, is only 135F.

While checking this sort of thing, I noticed that there was a jet of hot air shooting from the bike, at the plastic air deflector to frame interface. A closer look revealed that there's a slight gap at the forward end of the plastic insert. Turns out that this gap pretty well lines up with the hot spot that I've notice on my right thigh. This morning I removed the deflector and applied a piece of weatherstripping to the back edge of the frame so that the gap would be sealed with the air deflector.

This has got to fall into the "Duh!" category. The weatherstripping made a tremendous difference. The hot spot on my leg was eliminated. Too bad I had not seen Electraglider's note about sealing the deflectors about 4 months ago.

SEAL THE GAP!

The gap between the seat and frame is the culprit. If you seal this, then very little hot air will blow onto your right thigh.

I was amazed at the difference. 5 minutes and a little HVAC tape cured the heat problem. It does not completely eliminate the problem, but it is definetly a drastic reduction.

Here are a few photos. This is version 2. V1 was a bunch of smaller strips, each sealing part of the gap. When I was done, I realized that it would be easier, and neater, if I just sealed the whole thing.

My seat and vents seem ok on mine, all my heat is coming from the frame...



The right side left a burn mark on the inside of my right leg on the homecoming trip last July.

Bartimus, have you put a heat barrier on the inside of the frame? Automotive stuff works great.

Hi Guys,
My computer has been broken for awhile so haven't been able to reply here. I added the sheepskin on the seat, that made the seat slightly more comfortable and a little cooler. Then based on the local dealer's suggestion had the pipes Jet Hot coated in silver, looks great but for the price I don't notice a big reduction in heat. I would suggest wrap on the pipes instead, much cheaper and probably just as effective. I have the Odie heat blanket but haven't installed it yet so hope that will help. I'll also probably try insulating the inside of the frame since that gets so hot.
