Anyone using one with a palm? I'm all Mac but have a couple of palms I could use.

I'm a little lost as to how to make up a connector for it since it is different then the PC set up.
Has anyone made one up? And could you tell me what I need? I'm good with nuts and bolts but not to so with electrical diagrams.

I use a Palm TX with ECMSpy, and it works great. However, the TX is probably one of the best for the task, because it has TTL communication built into the wiring harness. Most palms have RS-232 or USB only. So, you'll have to do some research and figure out what type of communication your Palm has, then figure out how to get it to talk to the bike.

By the time they went to color screens, they were moving away from TTL and to straight RS232 (as I recall). With some exceptions (like the Tx).

Don't know if there is an easy way to find out which were which. Maybe look for compatible GPS cables or something, and back into the answer.

That one might work. Again, a *really* dim memory though....

I'm using ECMSPY (awesome program!) on a Palm Treo 700P which still has TTL signals on the multi-connector. I cut apart a serial hotsync cable and soldered the 3 needed wires to the multi-connector. I didn't wire it to provide power to the Treo. I've been able to record a log file for over an hour before the Treo battery loses power.

I cannot find a pinout for a Tungsten E. I don't know if it is the same as the E2 or not. Here is the site that I use for pinout schematics:
http://pinouts.ru/pin_PDA.shtml

Look through the Palm selections and see if you can figure out which fits yours.

Well all I can say is you guys are way over my head on this stuff. I'm more of a plug and play. maybe it would easier to get an older pc laptop.

Sprintex we are using Palm Tungsten E's in Australia with a lead made up by one of the guys here,if you go to the ECMspy website,I'm sure it's in there,it was on UKbeg, but I had heard they lost all their info after hackers destroyed the site.

Skrobe, I have a Treo 650 as a phone. Should be the same connector AFAIK, but which wires did you use to make your connector? I'd love to be able to use my phone to tune my bike. Too cool. I'd love someone to post a wiring diagram of how to do this. I don't think I'm quite knowledgeable enough to figure it out myself.
thanks

Neurorider,

The 650 does have the same connector on it as the 700P.

You might not be able to chop an existing sync cable to make an ECMSpy cable. IIRC, they don't have contacts installed in the correct pin positions for the serial port.

Here's an old thread about how to make the serial cable for Treo's and some other palms. JandJ_davis's diagram is much nicer though...

Usually single contacts in the pda's plug can be pulled and re-installed with some care taken. I've done so several times. They are made from one single piece, so nothing could get lost.

Regards,
Gunter

That's the way I had to make my connector. It took me about 4 tries (those stupid pins bend/break too easily), but I eventually got it. When you take apart the palm connector, the pins just slip in/out of the connector. Move the wires around (remembering the colors), chop off the USB end, attach the Deutch end, and you are golden. If I could have gotten it first try, I think the whole cable would have cost me $10. Not to bad for the capability of tuning my bike and data logging!

These data cables say they're shielded, if I trim the line short, like 12 to 18 inches I wonder if I could data log without interference by just putting it under the seat on my TT and doing a canyon run?

I picked up a used, almost brand new TX for $50 and hope to use it for dedicated ECM tuning. Cables were less than $4. Got an additional wall charge and car charger for it for another $4.50, so I can wire that into my junction /distribution block if I need to to keep the thing running instead of going into sleep mode... or whatever.

Thanks for your help Josh and Terry.
