My brother and I decided to go to Sturgis the week before the rally and enjoy the Black hills in semi solitude. I let him take the Uly and I the Geezer Glide. We take the back roads and an hour into the trip the Uly gets a flat rear tire. No nail or screw, just a hole. A gentleman pulls over to help and offers us his compressor so I plug the tire using a mushroom plug and we air it up and we are on our way. The next morning the tire is flat so I put some CO2 in it to get to a station but once there the plug won't hold air. I plugged it again but no luck so we ride into town and find a parts store. We get a rope style plugger and try again and this holds air. Once again we are on our way. To make up for some lost time we decide to take some interstate so I traded bikes with my bro and proceed to cruise 75 on the interstate. Suddenly I start to feel the rear sway back and forth and know exactly what's going on. I headed to the shoulder and gently slowed my pace but the slower I went the more violent it was getting. I decided the weeds looked a lot softer than the pavement so I started easing into the ditch letting the weeds slow me down, until I noticed the mile marker post dead ahead!!!  Now it's back on the throttle and up the hill and I clear the right saddlebag and once again coast to the bottom of the ditch. I come to a stop upright, find low and ride up out of the ditch. This time I take two ropes and plug it again. I put in the last three CO2 cartridges and make it to a gas station and air her up. We decide interstate is not a good idea so we take the back roads West. When we stopped for the night we were watching the weather and if we had gone on North we would have hit 6 inches of rain, hail and tornadoes!! Sometimes things just happen for a reason! We made it to Roosters HD/Buell the next day and they put on a new skin and treated us extremely well, especially since they were so busy getting everybody ready to go to Sturgis. At least I gave them a good laugh when all the old plugs fell out of the tire! | ||

can't wait for the day that i can get back out there just to ride around again. was out in 2001 where i got to test ride my first buell and the rest is history. | ||

Gentlemen, Excellent photos and sounds like a great trip! Reminds me of the adventure Maximum, his son, and I had on the way out to Homecoming. What a majestic area the Black Hills are. Thanks for sharing. | ||

Tootal- I carry a small 12v air compressor along with my plug kit so I don't have to worry about running out of CO2 cartridges. They're fairly cheap and available at Wallyworld and most parts stores. | ||

I looked into getting a small compressor but they all were Chinese and my track record using Chinese products hasn't been so good. I'm afraid the first time I went to use it I'd have a failure. I know that CO2 cartridges are going to work and they will just lay there for years and still be there when I need them. I'm glad yours is working for you, I'm just not as trusting I guess! | ||

Good to see you guys in Durango. Took a while to shake you! LOL Or did you shake us? What are the odds that a Uly parks next to my wife's Beemer when we ride mine to dinner? Looked at the oil filter, and figured you must be a BadWebber. Hey, I use a Chinese compressor (two actually) in my truck and can't seem to kill them (the relays inside are a bit weak, truth be told. I just bypass them in the truck.). Superflo MV50. There are a couple different models and names but the same basic compressor. Careful though, the dang thing puts a 30A load on the battery. I just carry a compact bicycle tire pump in one of my saddlebags. It only takes a couple minutes to pump up a moto tire; heck, I've even used it on a car tire once or twice. It takes up almost no room, and it never fails. | ||

Thanks for the input on inflation guys, I may look into something else to blow things up, I mean inflate! Red Chili, I felt bad after realizing what my brother did. I stayed for another beer but he's not a beer drinker so he went on back to the room. He saw that the Beemer rider was nice enough to leave room for another bike, not thinking about a couple using one bike to go to dinner!! I can just hear your thoughts as you rode up, "Who's the AHOLE that took my spot!!, hey it's another Uly!" Anyway, a pleasure meeting you and your bride. I had a restaurant in mind in Lake City but it was no longer there so we grabbed the nearest substitute. I think it was called the No Name restaurant. Did you guys get any of the rain? We made it to Salida, in the rain, before grabbing a room. They have a microbrewery that also has a wood fired pizza oven. Great place. After breakfast on Main St. in Canyon City we banzied on East to Hays Kansas. I just got back from taking the Uly to the dealer for the BAS recall along with a warped front rotor, exhaust valve actuator failure and the front motor mount's rubber is starting to crack. I have roughly eight days left on the warranty so I played hooky from work to take care of important things! The Uly has a hair over 13000 miles for anyone who's keeping records on 2006 failures. Anyway, I will be back in Colorado next year if possible. I give you a yell and maybe you can tell me some good roads or show me is even better! tootal | ||

You're on. I am embarrassed to say you pretty much nailed my initial thoughts when we got back. Then perspective/maturity kicked in, I realized no one would have known what our plans were, and hey, it was a Uly with telltale BadWeb sign! Besides, there was enough room to crowd in (wouldn't have, but there were no spaces left!). Your ride sounds great. We made it to Lake City skirting most of the rain, and stumbled upon a Southern restaurant on the south end of town west of the main drag. VERY good catfish. Then we got pretty well dumped on going to Gunnison. It cleared up a bit, and on the ride north to Buena Vista the setting sun slanting beneath the clouds, striking the low clouds across the valley, against a backdrop of dark clouds, gave me shivers it was so beautiful. Carrie was pretty much toast by then so we overnighted in 'Byoonie' even though it was only 2 hours from home. Had a fine Mexican dinner at Casa del Sol. It was a fine evening and I'm glad I indulged my lovely bride. I don't know that I know all the great roads (that you don't already know) but it would be great to ride with you. I wish Carrie was back in form; I would have loved taking Cinnamon Pass (unpaved). Mebbe less so after heavy rain, but still... It's on the to-do list. The definitive Uly road if ever there was one. I camped on the lake on the way to Cinnamon Pass last year but did not ride the Pass. I rode over Engineer Pass which I heard was a little tougher than Cinnamon but since I haven't done Cinnamon yet that sounds like a good plan!! I also want to do Black Bear pass to Telluride, it was washed out last year. Hmmmmm I can see the gears starting to mesh.... tootal | ||

Just did Cinnamon pass mid July. Came up from Animas Forks... good ride. Met Mt. Man in Colorado while fueling up the ULY. Claimed his bike was a babe magnet... not sure if I want to see the babe who would get lubed up riding his machine. Also, check out the fine print at Cadillac Ranch... No, I did not have any paint with me.     | ||

For those of you who missed the overheating issue while on the ULY... Normally the heat problem arises on our right legs. My heat issue for some reason was directed towards my back. After turning around, the source was identified, and after a quick stop, the heat dissipated... at least for a while. Hats off to Johnboy, my heat issue was a bit more fun to get to the bottom of than his. "Pun" intended...  | ||

Tootal... did you come up from Lake City and then down to Animas Forks? I went from Silverton thru Cinnamon to Lake City... Odd... Ophir was more demanding and I was told prior to heading over by a BLM employee in Dolores, CO. that Ophir was the easier. Ophir was a rock puzzle... zig one way while zagging the other way and only being able to look about 10 feet ahead. Rock H E doublehockeysticks... From what is said on this site by others, the XB9 gearing would of made it a tad easier. Still amazed that the clutch held up. Cinnamon was a beautiful ride that the ULY found as a bit of a test but well within the range and ability of even a moderate off roader. I may of just caught Ophir a bit early in the season and prior to it being a little cleaned up and smoothed out by jeep traffic. But, would do it again tomorrow if I lived out in that area. | ||

Jb2607 I originally rode from Ouray to Lake City but my camera died before I reached the summit. I rode all the way around to Durango and spent the night there. The next day I had breakfast in Silverton and rode by Animas Fork and on up Engineer Pass again, just to get the photo's. The Silverton way was much easier than from Ouray. That was work on the Uly, but a lot of fun too, with the tall gearing and no power below 3000 rpm at that altitude. I may change the cams in it someday to bring the power band down where I can use it!! Maybe the XB9 gearing too. I'm not familiar with Ophir, but sounds intriging! Back in 87' I rode my bicycle from Durango to Telluride then over Red Mountain pass to Ouray and down to Montrose. Few days later made over 13 mountain passes to Golden where Coors is. Very tired by then. |
