First off - please no posts of "the bike is not made for it..."

I want to make my 2008 Uly better for the track, but without loosing the essential Uly-bits (beaver tail, looks, guards) if I can help it.

The main (and maybe only) problem is power. Everything up from a SV650 passes me on the straights, and then I spend every corner passing them back again either inside or outside.

So - either more outright power (without sacrificing reliability), or faster entry/corner/exit speeds...?

I know that better suspension will help the latter, however I'm already wearing out the tyre sidewall enough...

Of course the other option is to find a more twisty track, but the one close one (Brands Hatch) is very expensive.

Any ideas/advice?

I know that FB and Chadhargis have some tips like lowered handlebars (details?)? Anything else similar?

I already have:
Mostly carbon bodywork
Freespirits (HP) 45mm tuned aero headers
Freespirits (HP) reverso exhaust
K&N filter

Seems that the remus poweriser does not work with 2008 models? Likewise ECM Spy (with the last 2008 ECM flash from HD).
There is the ultimate airbox from trojan - on my list... http://www.trojan-horse.co.uk/prods/96.html

Thanks - any ideas appreciated!

But it is! Sure it ain't no 1125r, but that's not the point.

Same problem with every air cooled Buell. Any moron can go fast in a straight line, the twistys is where you separate the men from the boys.

2008 Tuning is limited at the moment, due to the all new fuel injection system. In time that will change.

Lower the suspension to TT specs, clubman bars, decent tires, 09XB primary gearing, weight loss for both the bike and the rider : ) every 100#s is an increase of 10 RWHP

Upgrade front and rear brakes with 1125R Caliper and master cylinder (Buell Accessory Catalog) and the Brembo Rear Brake that Al Liton has to offer. Go with the softest (highest friction) brake pads you can locate, remember you are at the track and are not riding on the street, so long life is not an issue for brake pads.

Possibly a lighter set of wheels, Uly wheels are heavy duty for off road stregnth.

Good Luck

Trojan's race bike was a uly as I remember. I am unsure exactly why.

Buelldualsport - good tips. Tyres are very good conti road attacks. 09XB gearing would loose the top end - I'm max'ing out on the straights at 135mph.
What do you mean by clubman bars?
Great tip re 1125R caliper & master. Has anyone done this?

Bigkuri-Buell now has the 1125 caliper/rotor/master as a retrofit/upgrade kit. It is on their website, and I think americansportbike.com has it also. I haven't done it yet but I like it!

Well, if you are riding an 80 hp motorcycle, most motorcycles with more than 80 hp are going to pass you on the straight. That is just the way it is. SV 650s and ER 650s are a bit under 80, so it is expected that the Uly will be competitive. You are just not going to keep up with a well ridden, 120 hp, 600-4, ever. (the poorly ridden ones are easy targets)

You just have to keep in mind the power classification that the Ulysses is in. You might be able to tweak it up to 90 hp or so, but then you will lose reliability and rideability.

Are you sure that you are getting the best use of the V-twin's corner exit drive? Many riders ride V-2s much the same way as they ride I-4s, lots of revs. A V-2 does not need to be kept fully on the boil, downshifting to keep revs up, when entering a corner. Often, it will be to your advantage, to stay geared up, roll through the turn, and get back on the power very, very early. Taking advantage of high torque values over rpm multiplication. It is more tractable, more controllable, and more predictable.

Don't listen to the naysayers.

I enjoyed the hell out of my Uly last weekend:

The problem is that without a major engine mod, you will get passed by most of what's out there and WITH a major engine mod you will STILL get passed by most of what's out there.

If you are talking about track days, just enjoy it for what it is. Make the mods that do the least to ruin it for the street (weight reductions, suspension, brakes, fuel mapping, etc.). Leave the major engine mods alone.

I was able to pass folks in the turns and I got dusted in the long straight. That's just the way it is when you are giving away 30-50 HP. There were no trophies, so to me it didn't really matter.

I was able to pass a friend of mine on an RC51. I caught him loafing coming into the long straight and passed him. At the time I remembered thinking "old age and treachery". : D

I hope I did my Uly brethren justice.

Buy the 1125R and you'll still be on a Buell but you'll be so far ahead of them that they'll never catch you.

Sage advice FB.
Will see about a few gentle tweaks to the airbox (trojans ultimate airbox), and maybe some sort of fueling mod (I wish that ECM Spy worked for the 2008s!!), also some lower bars, and maybe better brakes after a bit of saving my budget allows next month. Other than that, time to go on a diet : D

Cheers all for the suggestions!

Still, it'd be awfully cool to drop an XBRR plant in one...

I have the Charmichael bend Pro-Taper bars with the Precision Engineering fat bar clamps.

Changed the ergos on the bike completely. Would HIGHLY recommend them. Both can be had together for right around $100-120. Cables are fine as stock, but if you are going to be swapping out brake components, the front hose will be swapped out anyway.
