A good friend of mine, an excellent motorcyclist, and in his late 20s, just boggled my mind yesterday when he purchased a brand-spankin-new 2008 Goldwing. This is a guy who is into riding smaller, super moto style bikes, old school fixer-upers, and owns a Honda Shadow. This guy ground his boots and pegs off on the last trip to the dragon. It just doesn't make sense! We ride HARD around here...what am I gonna do now when he wants to ride the local twisties on his new white yacht? No disrespect for the Goldwing intended, I know it's a fine machine and will no doubt have one in my stable...in about another 25 years. No need to talk me into how incredible they handle, I've ridden them before. It's just the principle. Naturally, I can't help but give him a hard time...am I out of line here? Maybe I'm hypocritical as I am on the younger side of the Uly riders, but I mean...its a Uly for God's sake!

So...is 20 something too young to be rockin the Wing?

No. Think of it as having the right hammer for the job.

Yeah...an $18,000 dollar hammer. Still not convinced.

I'd buy one, but they discontinued the accessory mini fridge. I ended up putting one on my Uly.

One of the fastest guys on the Dragon I saw when I was there was a guy on a canary yellow Goldwing. I think offered a filming service for folks doing there runs. Seems like I heard alot of ricky racers were having trouble keeping up with him....
That said, I 'm with you. I get a S2000 before I bought a Wing, to each his own!

He goes by "Yellow Wolf" and here's his website:

I saw him finishing up a recording session with a BMW rider from Germany last year when I was at the Gap. I was told he's a former racer and has several thousand dollars in suspension upgrades to his Wing. He has a pretty cool video recording setup mounted on the bike.

I used to ride my buddys' Goldwing some......to each his own..but if that was the only motorcycle on Earth I would quit riding..it is totally soul-less and boring.. and man did it ride badly..the worst suspension on any bike I have ever ridden with its "anti-dive" front suspension... and the rear would slam down on sharp bumps too. The only good thing for me was I could listen to the radio..I ran into some Wing riders in Utah..they of course loved their bikes...one said..."Its like a limp D..k...you can't beat it"....yuck yuck... I asked those guys how their bikes rode they said great...until they hit a bump.......OK ....Just think how fast the Dragon riding winger would be on a Buell... "Its not the bow...its the Indian"..Everyone to their own..thats what makes the world go around..

Thanks for the confirmation Hugh, man did that guy haul a*s. I remember watching him through a particular corner, 1 inch from the center line to 1 inch to the gravel shoulder, talk about using your entire lane! It was kinda surreal to see a Wing ridden like that.

funny, my first bike that I had a plate on was a 1978 GL, started with all the bags and fairing... My grandfather gave it to me after the Honda shop wouldnt give him anything in on trade for the 1984 GL. I was 16. I stripped it, took 80 lbs off the porker, ran her for 4 years. fun bike, I always thought they looked better as a naked standard, funny how I have come back to those ; )

naked! standard! yes! I used to see an old stripped Gold Wing parked on a previous commute and it always caught my eye - in a good way.

They look good stripped. Not mine, but same year. All my photos are packed up with my household goods.

I had a Goldwing once...for about 4 months. It SUCKED!!

My wife said if I bought a Goldwing she'd ride with me and help me pay for it.

She rode with me TWICE, and I sold the big, fat, uncomfortable (yep..the Ulysses is LOADS more comfortable) pig.

"Soulless" as Adrian_8 said...a few years ago we did Utah on rented Goldwings and it barely felt like we were on motorcycles....I was feeling good pulling out of an overlook ,clutched it a little just out of habit and the front forks didn't even extend....

We just spent 10 days touring Oregon on rented E-Glides, nice bike BUT, my wife is much more comfortable on the Uly and man is that thing heavy at low speeds. However, there is something to be said about a radio and cruise control on a bike....

Had an 01 Wing. Put new front fork springs in, disconnected the anti-dive, and she handled great, and I mean great (for my skill level). Yellow Wolf can show how to ride the new wing, but there are lots of folks out there that can also ride the thing. I had a Concours and that thing handled like a slug in comparason. I got the uly so that I could fit two bikes in my toy hauler (fiance' also has a bike and we camp alot). I have found that the Uly is a more comfortable bike for me, and I do not need to upgrade the suspension for my skill level. the only thing that I miss about my wing is the plug and play capabilites, but with minor work I have all the same stuff on the Uly and no regrets. I got lots of gaff from my friends about having the "old man bike", but until you have become acclimated to one, it is hard to appreciate its capabilites. I would get another one if I could have two bikes, but I would not get ride of the Uly for one.
