Any more word on the new ECM map for the 08 Uly? I called my dealer and he said nothing has been released. I also called Customer Service, and they said nothing has been released as well. I really like the idea of increasing the mpg.

Vern - I've run my Uly out of gas as well. 35.8 miles on reserve! My best on one tank is 210 miles. That was on my last ride to the mountains.

As for best fuel mileage, I find that mine gets the best mileage running 55-60mph. On the BRP I managed 62.54mpg over 119 miles. I hit 56+mpg regularly when riding dedicated two-lane highway over an extended period.

Worst mileage I have seen on a Buell was on the M2 at Daytona Beach during bike week. Very heavy traffic to the point we were shutting off the bikes and rolling dead stick off down hills and off bridges. I still only got 34mpg on that tank.

I have not yet averaged below 40mpg between refills on the Uly, but have not been in heavy all day stop & go traffic either. The M2 and the Uly get about the same gas mileage. My best on the M2 was 56mpg.

Ok, Low Country HD/Buell re-flashed the ECM with the new patch and I got a fresh tank of 93 octane. Let's see what happens to fuel consumption. One thing I noticed immediately was the roughness just below 3K RPM was gone.

Anybody else getting the ECM re-map? I'm not sure about re-doing mine since it's already running well, but if it improves fuel economy it would probably be worth it.

With apologies to 08Uly for having posted to his database improperly . . .I have just returned from a Uly trip from Boulder to the Oregon coast. Although I did not pay too much attention to mileage by tank, my data for the round trip is as follows . .

Total miles . . .3766.4 miles
Fuel used . . . . 79.86 gallons
Miles per gallon . . 47.16 MPG

My 2007 Uly has the XB9 primary conversion, and was packed with both a set of Caribou side bags and a "tour pack" Pelican bag of my own mount design. In addition, I strapped a waterproof stuff bag onto the top of the "tour pack." The overall effect was a very light front end (the tire would begin to lift if I tried to park on a hill) and some remarkable sail-like properties in cross winds. The outbound mileage was heavily skewed by strong head winds for the first 1000 miles, and I coasted into a gas station in Rock Springs, Wyoming after running the tank dry at 167 miles. The gas receipt for that stop says the Uly was very thirsty - 4.31 gallons - which works out to be 38.7 MPG.

If I might be allowed a little off topic puffery, the first 1016 mile leg was done in 18 hours. It is the second longest continuous motorcycle ride in my 43 year motorcycle history, with the first being 1046 miles on the Uly last July - Dana Point, Ca to Boulder. I have still not been able to quite figure out why I waited until I have an AARP card as well as all the aches and pains that go with the gray hair . . .before finding myself in these long rides. I think it would have hurt a lot less back in my twenties on one of the Triumphs.

YMMV

Nice job Don!

Your XB9 conversion has not seemed to affect your mileage at all (as compared to the Uly Data Page average). Do you have any regrets about the conversion?

Max,

Although I seem to recall having slightly better overall mileage on the Dana Point trip in July (before the XB9 conversion), I believe that for my purposes the stock gearing on my Uly was too high. I won't be changing back in the near future . . .although I did have a moments thought about the merits of the taller gearing as I was coasting into Rock Springs on an empty tank.

YMMV

I'm not Don, but I'll answer anyway. : )

Before I did the XB9 conversion, I did an experiment of driving to a city 100 miles away in 5th gear and return in 4th, measuring the gas mileage both ways. I got better mileage in 4th.

It wasn't much better (53 vs 51) and I was only running between 70 and 75 mph. But it wasn't worse mileage, which is what I was worried about.

After that experiment, I stopped using 5th gear. The bike is a hell of a lot more responsive and fun in 4th, and if I'm not giving up gas mileage, there isn't much point in running the higher gearing.

I did a trip across the country last fall. It was rushed and almost all interstate. I found 4th gear preferable to 5th in every situation I tried. Even in the states like Wyoming where everyone is running 90 mph, once you load the bike up like in Don's picture and throw the rocky mountains into the picture, it just doesn't pull well in 5th.

I finally actually did the XB9 swap and It's working out well. The improvement at low speeds is fantastic. I can actually go 8mph now w/o slipping the clutch. It takes a deft hand on the throttle, but it's doable. The only down side I've found is you have to shift more often if you're running up to speed (assuming you were going to stop at 4th gear like I was doing.) Other than that, it's all good.

I did some riding this last week comparing my '06 Uly's mileage using 93 octane gas with and without ethanol. I am getting the best mileage I've ever seen--53 MPG--with the ethanol-free gas. This is a good 5 MPG higher than my best performance with ethanol-added premium. The riding was a mix of two lane and slab, 60-80 MPH, with RPM kept between 3 and 4 K except for passing situations.

I'm in the process of developing/converting the Uly data page into a real Database. The way it works now with the Google spreadsheet is kind of limiting and I don't think the Google sheet can handle many more samples without breaking down.

Once the new DB is ready you should be able to see your own data as well as the data for the whole group and it will be much more robust & dynamic.

How about adding some more info categories?

I don't know if it will be beneficial or not...but I just starting tracking a few stats from the Garmin Zumo; like average speed, average moving speed, and maximum speed. I'm using a little Palm Treo spread sheet to look for trends.

Here's my last entry:

Date: 6/20/08
Miles: 186.0
Gallons: 3.75
MPG: 49.60
Avg Speed: 39.2
Moving Avg: 46.7
Max Speed: 85.0

I may be wasting my time, but I am just curious to see if those stats that the Zumo can track will give me any insight to the effect of MPG for my riding style.

I am currently 100 miles into a "no saddlebags" fuel economy run. I've got my stock windshield and no panniers and I'm riding as conservatively as a Uly will allow. I'm gonna see if I can correlate the drag a big windshield and big ass Happy-Trail easy bake ovens tied to the side make in fuel economy. Should be interesting.

My local Buell dealer swears there is no new program for the ecm, so after he "discovers" it on his own, I'll have it installed and run the same comparisons again.

I've run the last couple of fuel loads without the side bags. If it makes a difference, the difference is small.

No trips recently, almost all commuting miles. GPS average speed is 42, moving average is 48. Mostly urban freeway.

My afternoon commute is in extreme heat. I have no idea what the temperature on the roadway is but the official temperatures have been over 110 for the past two weeks. This cannot be good for the fuel in the bike.

The new Uly Data Page & form is ready and the old form is no longer working. You can now see your average MPG in real time every time you enter your data. I'll be adding a link to the raw data soon.

Please use & bookmark the new form & page.

I know it's kind of plain right now but I wanted to get the DB version running before the spreadsheet crapped out.

I have another 3000 mile trip this fall planed and I am going to look into the 10% E gas. My last set of samples I failed to keep track if it was real gas or 10% E.
I did notice about a 20 mile less total range when I did gas up with 10% E but I failed to keep the data to back it up. When I tracked the mileage per fill up I ran out of space on my paper and started writing in the margins. I couldn't tell if was a "spirited" ride day or a tank of crappy gas on a slab ride.
This is a a awsome spreed sheet!! maybe we need a total miles driven this year sheet started to see how many miles a ULY covers in a year!!!! I know I will top out well over 10,000 this year.

I just ran from home to Baltimore (about 60 miles each way) on superslab on my 06, with a new Drummer. 48 mpg cruising between 80-90, Buell top case, and my lanky 6'4" body performing like a sail. Strong headwinds on the way home, too.

For trivia, I did note gaining about 3mpg around town by removing the Buell sidecases. My average in town / commuting (agressively) is 42, just about every tank. This week will be the first on the Drummer, we'll see...

Just got back from the Dragon - 900 mile round trip; 44+ mpg; no bags, tall windshield; best yet on my '08; no bags appears to be worth +2 or +3 mpg.

My bike runs well, but if the new engine map results in better mpg, sign me up! I would love to get 50 mpg.

My life has lost its last vestige of goodness. The local Sunoco gas stations have just begun selling the dreaded 10%, bend over, stick it in, break it off, alcohol blended, 10% less mileage for the same higher price, gas.

It has become all that is available here now. Shit.

Still cleaning it up but now you can click your username and it will return a list of only your data.

The DB version is much quicker too!

Enjoy

Glad it's being used and as it grows it's becoming more valid across the range of all Uly riders.

Approaching 800 samples... Keep'em coming!

You can now sort the leaderboard by the various headings and see the data listed in various ways. You can control the number of samples shown as well.

I've also added a conversion for Imp. Gallons and Liters to the form.

I'm thinking of separating the XT's in the group so may need some feedback on that and I'll also add the 2009's.

Thanks for the continued support,

I've added a separate category for the XT's.

Those that have the XT can now check the 2008XT box when filling in the form.

For all the existing XT riders please send me a PM and I'll go in and correct your data so it gets counted correctly.

Thanks,

Only two XT's in the Uly MPG DB?

I thought there were a few more...

If your XT is mixed in with the x's let me know.

Also found a cool animated gif of a v-twin...
