Hi! I just picked up a brand spankin new 2008 XB12Ss (black/red). Only 6 miles on it from the dealer. So cool! I got it from Danbury HD in CT. There was some type of a get together there last night when I picked it up, and some guy with a blue (05?) XB told me to check this site out. I'm coming off a 2004 ZX-10R. I've only ever had sport bikes (5 of them), definitely LOVED the ZX-10. Got tired of the whole sportbike thing in general though, and I absolutely love this new Buell!

So I've taken a look across the web at what's available for aftermarket stuff. I've got a few questions:

1. Are there common things that XB riders think are "must haves"? I have to say so far I think the bike is really well designed. I'm sure there must be (small) things that people think are quirky or what not.

2. How long do you think the "break in" period is? I would imagine like a new car, I don't want to push it too much for X number of miles. I've never had a brand new bike...everything previously was over 1000 miles.

3. I like the sound of the exhaust at idol, and I really like it up over 4K. In between kind of reminds me of somewhere between a string trimmer and a chain saw. Are there any aftermarket cans/pipes/etc that really change the sound, for better or worse? I've seen a few guys with what looks to be the same dual tip (one left, one right) after market exhaust, maybe Jardine I recall.

4. The first thing I noticed is that my magnetic tank bag doesn't work! I've seen that there's a Buell labeled bag, and I've also seen some others. Any input on what works well for being able to carry a change of clothes and shoes (e.g. back and forth to work)?

Cool, so you did make it here. I was the guy that told you about this place : )

Real quick off topicness, This section is the Big Bad and Dirty, its mostly Ulysses discussion. The XBoard will make you feel more at home. Since I used to have a Uly you can always find me here. Also us Danbury guys have our own section where we organize rides and stuff. We are going down to the city for some BBQ on Saturday, if you want to come just show up at Danbury Harley at 11am. I hope Court shows up, I want my book signed. : )

Everyone has their own list of must haves. I feel that Aprillia Tuono mirrors should come on the bike from the factory, but that’s me. Also heated grips standard on every model. I put both on my Long, I even used the heated grips this morning because it was a tad chilly when I left for work : )

Break in, this is right from the owner's manual:

The sound design, quality materials, and workmanship that are built into your new Buell motorcycle will give you optimum performance right from the start.

To allow your engine to wear in its critical parts, we recommend that you observe the riding rules provided below for the first 500 miles 800 kilometers . Adhering to these suggestions will help to assure good future durability and performance.

During the first 50 miles 80 kilometers of riding, keep the engine speed below 4000 RPM in any gear. Do not lug the engine by running or accelerating at very low RPM, or by running at high RPM longer than needed for shifting or passing.

Up to 500 miles 800 kilometers , vary the engine speed and avoid operating at any steady engine speed for long periods. Engine speed up to 5000 RPM in any gear is permissible.

Drive slowly and avoid fast starts at wide open throttle until the engine has warmed up.

Avoid lugging the engine by not running the engine at very low speeds in higher gears.

Avoid hard braking. New brakes need to be broken-in by moderate use for the first 200 miles 300 kilometers .




Exhaust, your best bet is the Drummer exhaust. It is hand made by Kevin Drum in Florida. He takes your stock muffler, cuts it to pieces and sends you back one of the best mufflers you can get. Other Good options are Special ops (gutted stock like Drummer), Buell Race Pipe (discontinued), Micron (What I have, and also unofficially discontinued).

Tank bags, most people use the Buell made one, I am happy with mine.

I got both if you ever want to see them side by side. Oh yea, with the translucent plastics they tend to get scratched up more than the standard plastics.

Switch- You can still use your magnetic tank bag with a little work. People have taped or glued large steel washers or magnets inside the airbox cover. Just 4 screws hold the cover on, remove it, trial fit your tank bag, and place the washers or magnets in the corresponding spots on back, then reinstall it.

Hugh, he has the translucent cherry bomb plastics, I doubt he would want the magnets showing through, but that sounds like a cool trick.

I used the MOTOMAN break-in just as others here have done and I'm convinced that is the way to do it. My bike runs like a champ and always has.

If you use magnets you will have to make sure that you have the North and South poles identified on the bag first. Otherwise the magnets will end up repelling instead of sticking to each other.
