I recently purchased a 2006 Uly from a dealer. The bike was well taken care of, and moderately farkled with stuff coming out later in the Uly evolution, like the frame air deflectors, right side air scoop, etc. I am interested in doing further mods to it, but before I do, please allow me to ask the following questions: A) How does the 07 air box differ from the 06? Anyone have a pic? The air box on this one has several ventilation holes cut into it, looks professionally done, but since I don't know the difference, it may still be an 06. It still appears to have a stock air filter, which will go very soon anyway... B) For what reason would the previous owner place a piece of plastic over the right side vent holes in the air box? Noise? Cut back on TOO much air? C) What will removing the servo actuator cable do for the performance? Your advice and expertise is greatly appreciated! | ||

A sure sign the airbox was cut, as the '07 does not have holes on the right side. C) What will removing the servo actuator cable do for the performance? It will do no good without wiring open the interactive valve on the muffler. | ||

A few people here have been experimenting with the exhaust valve lately. Most have found that by wiring it open it sounds better but at the expense of mid range power and torque. The '06 air box had openings on the right side that made it inhale hot air off the heads. Most people that modified the '06 box by drilling holes for more fresh air simply covered the right side. The '07 air box had large squarish holes that were much larger than the '06 inlets. It was solid on the right side. Some bikes, not all, needed a re-flash from an '07 ECM to make the air box mod effective. | ||

Judging from what you say then, Etennuly, the previous owner had the right idea by blocking the holes on that side, correct? With the right side scoop installed, would it be beneficial to open that side up again? From the information posted, I think the guy may have done the work himself. I might get out the drill and open it up some more, or just go with eliminating the box altogether. Will I see any benefit without updating the ECM to 07? | ||

I modded my 06 air box by opening it up exactly like the 07. Been running it with the right side open also. Been like that for a week and now for some strange reason decided to block the right side..... I dont know why, seemed like the right thing to do after I found a suitable piece of plastic. | ||

I mod'd mine a long time ago and never closed off the right side holes and I've never seemed to have any problems leaving them as is. | ||

After removing said side plate, yesterday I took a couple hundred mile ride. No appreciable noise difference, power was not reduced, but I really didn't feel any gains either. It still has a stock air cleaner, but a K&M is ordered. Winter calls for a Drummer mod, and maybe the ECM redone.....that's about as far as I want to take any modifications of that nature, although I might lower it some more so I can put both feet on the ground... here I go, hijacking my own post...LOL |
