I finally got it - it took 8 months, 4500 miles, and every old school trick in the book but I finally got my uly right. When it had less than 100 miles on her, she fouled a plug. Shop replaced the plugs. I thought it was a very buzzy bike and the bottom end was really rough. I thought it must be a trait of Buells. My hands were always numbed. 2500 to 3000 rpm was the old lawnmower feel.

Many tricks tried and they all had a cumulative effect,BUT, the buzz always came back.

Then I screwed in a set of irridium plugs. Whilst unscrewing the old plugs, I was quite astonished to find them under-torqued. Way under-torqued.

Now I have a much smoother Uly. Not Gold Wing smooth but much smoother, nonetheless. My hands did'nt go numb on this last ride.

The positive side to all this is I really got to know this sled. I did a lot of experimenting.

I'll be riding the Mountain Rally in Morgantown WV [ rated one of the best in the world ] this weekend. Lets see what happens.

When you say under-torqued, are you saying that they might have not been making good contact with the head? or maybe leaking combustion gases? or, do you think that maybe the smoother motor is because the Iridiums are sparking better. I wonder, because mine runs fine but I have a set of those plugs waiting in my toolbox!

They were "snug" but the crush rings weren't crushed. Bad heat transfer and perhaps some blowback.

200 miles and no numb hands. Not a gold wing BUT life is sweet!

I sold my 01 goldwing and find my 06 Uly more comfortable on long rides on both hiways and back roads. I put on those heavy bar end weights (I think they are HVMP)and what a difference they made for hand vibs.

Yes, I have those HVMP weights too. Wonderful product, 2 minute install. I will probably also fill the handlebar with silicone caulk as that helps too (the good clear 50-year kind that stays rubbery). I never would have thought that sparkplug torque would be a factor! but, it does make sense.

Here's an update - I've just done over 500 miles this weekend so far. The Mountain fest in Morgantown WV is a worthwhile event.

My hands have not gone numb at all. Considering that I couldn't go to town without numb hands before show's a substantial improvement.

Triple S HD in Morgantown has a Barricade Orange 08 ULY on the floor and my impression is that they are willing to make a deal!

Just another example of a simple operation botched by a "certified" Buell mechanic.

I have ridden my Uly for 18K miles now through all kinds of terrible weather and roads and the most damage ever done to it was at the hands of the dealer for the 1K service.

It pays to turn your own wrenches on a Buell.
