I'm planning to rotate the engine in order to remove the header to have it ceramic coated. While I'm at it, I figure that I should take the opportunity to apply Thermotec heat barrier to the frame.

How much should I order to do the job? I certainly don't want to come up short and the stuff is pretty expensive to have a bunch left over.

Hi MArk,

You will pretty much need the height of the frame plus however far you want to go around. I did the right (hot) side only, and now the left side is hotter than the right in traffic. If you don't have ceramic headers, you may want to do the right side bottom too, as the heat rising from the headers is considerable.

I just finished the job on the Uly.....Two 12" x 24" sheets should do it....I had a roll of 2" as well that I used in a a few pieces of, but I did the fan area as well.

Only have about 30 miles on the test ride but combined with the Jet Hot headers and the cooling fan duct set-up I liked the results so far.

Hi,

I did the right inside frame rail a few weeks ago and made a pattern out of a paper grocery bag. I wrapped it around to where the cut out for the fan is. It measures 6 5/8" X 19 1/4".

To apply it I scored the backing about an inch from the bottom edge. I then removed about half of this 1" backing strip and started applying it to the frame from the back by the fan opening. Once I had this part of the bottom stuck on, I removed the rest of the backing above it and worked around toward the front. I then did the same for the front half working from the back toward the front.

Thermotec 1

Thermotec 2

Thanks for the info, and the photos. I've ordered the muffler strap and the exhaust gaskets. High Performance Coatings is only about 10 minutes from me.

I will plan to cover both sides of the frame and the bottom of the right side. Roadway temperature for my homeward commute is routinely about 135F. After about 15 minutes, the right side is too hot to touch.

Thank you for the photos but does it work? Can you feel the difference and have you measured it?
Nice work both of you.

Hi,

Yes, it works well. The temperature (by calibrated hand), is the same for both frame rails now. They still get pretty warm but not witched hot. For Arizona, the full treatment on both rails would be wise. Its a little more congested on this side and with the distance from the heads, I didn't bother.

I had the motor rotated down to put on my ceramic coated headers. I had them done by Calico Coating and applied the CoolKrome type. With the Thermotec, the ceramic headers and sealing the right side seat to frame gap, the heat is WAY down. I was riding one day with the temp around 90 and then realized, "hey I haven't thought about being hot". I smiled and said to myself, "well I guess I fixed that!"

I think one of the key areas to cover is on the frame directly above the front cylinder head. Check out this link for pictures http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/352214.html

Firstbatch,

It does look like a good idea to add the Thermotec to that part of the frame by the front head. I'm going to have to see if it can be added without rotating the motor again.

Hi Dave, got 'er all put pack together finally last weekend, except the plastic parts which should be here by friday. Fired right up and the timing is spot on....idles fine, sharp throttle response and even though it was stonking hot on Sunday not a hint of any detonation. Thanks for your help with the cams.

The thermotec fan duct worked really well and provided significant reduction in fan noise and directed all the heat down and out by the rear inner fender. Will go for a long ride this weekend , but I anticipate much reduced nut-roasting. Only downside may be that the full force of the fan is now directed more towards your right ankle. Time will tel if this will be a good mod.

Glen, you won't be able to apply the thermotec above the front cylinder head without the engine rotated, but who knows how much more temp reduction you really achieve with that application. I had plenty of time when mine was rotated so I covered as much of the frame as could be done.

Buell should coat the whole inside of the frame with Jet Hot at the factory..that would be niceeeee.

Hey Terry,
I just added the Thermotec to the product line, and your picture is better than the one I could get on my 1125R frame. Mind if I use your picture above?

Thanks,
Al
