Coming back this morning from my weekend at Lake Erie, I nearly got creamed by a bunch of kids in a Grand Am. It was pouring rain on the Turnpike and I slowed for slower traffic in front.

Maybe something wired to the rear brake light and mounted to the rear top box. ...an LED light of some sort, or OEM signal stalks.

Just need more conspicuity for the brake light from the rear.

At any rate, any ideas?

Thanks.

Thank you, Firstbatch ... this might be just the ticket, mounted to the top box.

+1 on the modulator idea!

Hopefully one day I can get my Uly light designed and built for you guys..

So far though, too many roadblocks!

I use the BackOff too, almost got greased by an Excursion at a stoplight one day. Scared the crap out of me when I heard a noise from behind and watched him swerve from directly behind me into the vacant right lane and ABS'd into the intersection...

Located under the seat here:

BackOff modulator

I wired it with another connector so I could switch between the two modes if I want. I keep it on the 4-flashes-steady-then-repeat mode though and hold a brake on at intersections.

I did buy a LED tail light that resembles our Uly tail lights, I'll post a pic later when I find it, haven't decided how to mount it yet...

I'd be really into an easy plug-in light for the rear...I'll be following this thread.

I have also gotten into the habit of repeatedly flashing my brakelight any time I come up to a stop or sense danger ahead.

Here's the LED tail light I bought, I originally got just one via inet since I wanted to see what I was dealing with. My original plan was to mount two below the turn signals to get that triangular effect combined with the tail light.

Lost interest in that one but now that the subject has come up I may just mount it on a plate behind the license plate light and just above.

Hey Xbimmer,

5050R looks nice - the oval might work as well:

Kisan makes a variety of products, including modulators & signal lights.

I know you're looking for something for your top box. The have a universal stop/turn light intended to mount to license plates. Maybe you could adapt this to your box.

But... but... there's CHROME on it!

Seriously, I hooked the 5050R up and the sucker is BRIGHT with the big sized LED's. I also like that it's self contained so that I can mount it flush to a plate of my design. Comes with a thin foam backing. It does stick out a bit though which doesn't lend itself well as a flush mount, rather more like a stand alone lamp.

The company was a treat to deal with, quick friendly service. Even though I was buying only one lamp instead of 50-60 for an 18-wheeler!

I wired two blue LEDS (single bulb on a long set of wires) into a Back Off Brake light modulator. I mounted the bulbs in washers inserted into the bottom two holes of my license plate frame. If you are familiar with the modulator, there are two different modes of flashing. I wired the OEM taillight/brakelight on one mode and the LEDs on a a different flashing pattern. I thought it might be risky as the blue violates the letter of the law in DC and Maryland but I used this set-up in full view of LEOs in both jurisdictions for 2-3 years and never had a problem.

The blues are VERY bright. I took some video on a cheap video recorder but the blues are so bright they just show up as white bursts on the video. I'd send the video but I'm still out of the country until mid-September

Hmmmmmm! Chrome!

Hey Xbimmer,

Thanks, just ordered your 5050R first thing this AM - it should work well mounted to the center of the top box.... hope it's really bright.

I plan to hook up the Back-off XP to just the top box light.

BTW, I have the Kizan headlight modulator - now people will actually wait for me to pass now before pulling out... I love it, safer than a high-viz jacket.

Thanks again..John

In addition to mounting a stand alone LED on your top case, you could try one of these:

http://www.customdynamics.com/knight_rider_led_lig ht_bar.htm#Knight_Riderz_LED_License_Plate_Frames

On your license plate...complete with LED plate bolts.

A few of my buddies have the Lite Blazer.

Also, I had another BadWebber make some really trick LED inserts for my stock turn signals. I'm going riding right now and will take some pictures.

I didn't choose to have any additional brake lights integrated to the signals, but I did have him design the boards so that all four signals now have very bright LED running lights in a addition to LED turn signals.

The rear running lights put the stock tail light to shame.

THIS would get some attention! The only drawback is that the're not rated for steady burn. (well, that, and the fact that they're expensive!) You could set it up to flash, though...

it works great, i get a lot of comments about how bright it is... i only use the brake function now, because its too damn bright to use as a tail light.... it fits right where your tag light goes... you can get some led tag bolts to light the tag if you want..

The signal minder has an option to set up the turn signals to work with the brake light. They can be steady-on, or blink then steady. I went with the blink mode.

Since this unit replaces the TS relay, all four turn signals come on as brake lights. Kind of odd, but I don't see the fronts so it does not bother me.

So here's what I did today:

Aux Uly Tail/Brake Light

Worked up a preliminary plate to check out how things arranged, used some thinner than I liked aluminum plate since the license plate light fasteners had to pass through also. Right now they're what's holding it all on and I don't trust the plastic in the plate light, but everything's solid and no apparent vibration shake at all. I've drilled a second set of holes 1/2" outboard of the plate light fastener studs in the tail light plate and fender, need to figure a way to secure it there so as not to stress the license plate light.

Anyway a quick jumper wire hookup and wow! Thanks to Midnightrider's idea I hooked up the extra lead from my BackOff to the aux light, the effect is impressive. I looped a spool of chalk line around the front lever and stood about 50' behind my bike, pulling the lever with the usual shenanigans I do while riding in order to wake up drivers behind me so I can stay alive.

Nice light show, the Aux light goes through 5 quick flashes then stays on as the Stocker cycles 4 slower flashes, then holds on, then repeats the cycle as long as the lever is held. VERY ATTENTION GETTING!

Johnboy I think you'll be pleased with the lamp, it's slightly brighter in daylight than the stocker which I always thought was pretty good anyway.

By now you can see there are MANY options! Personally, I've used on both Back-Off license plate lights (went with black frame / dual strip option) on my old XB9S and HyperLites (neatly arranged four sets of 16 bulb 3-ways - running, brake, and turn signal) on the bottom part of my top case of my new XT.

Like others have mentioned, installation of HyperLites was pretty straight forward, recommend using shrink tubing (best price from a real electrician supply store) to protect the longer leads. Their use of PosiTaps and PosiTwists makes it almost fool proof.

Like so many on this thread, I had a similar incident with a driver not paying attention to his front... Which meant he didn't see my rear at ALL!

Oh, forgot to mention, along with the added brake lights / turn signals, I have a very bright hi-viz yellow vest from Olympia MotoSports. Picked it up at a local BMW dealer. Works like a charm!

To top off my conspicuous look, I use a white helmet with a reflective U.S. flag.

From the front, I run MotoLights with amber bulbs. My bride tells me she can spot me at least 1/2 to a mile away with her rear view and side mirrors...

Yes, I may look like a xmas tree going down the road, but I've lost count of the number of cages that have either given me room to maneuver and/or avoided in making that left hand turn in front of me... So I guess something is working...

Hope this helps.. Sebastian

My intent, in wanting to mount it to the top box, was to try to get it up as high as possible for added visibility while braking, kinda like the 3rd brake light.

The license plate bracket is starting to appeal to me as well, in that it would create 3 braking lights.
