I am actually thinking about Palmers mud flaps for the front and rear. If we actually run that much gravel, these little mud flaps might be just the ticket.

As far as drummer/race can-I have found that LONG road trips at a constant RPM with a louder muffler leads to rider fatigue. Seeing as how we are going to be having mostly 500+ mile days that may/may not be a great idea.

I want to get away with as many OEM parts as possible (as well as OEM aftermarket add ons). Obviously the bash plates and stuff I will be forced to fabricate or buy from Touratech as well as some other things.

Replace the dreaded 77 connector with something heavier-duty!!!

Get the new updated rear wheel bearings if they're indeed available.

I'd definatly add a moose/bear deflector to the headlite mount. In the event that doesnt work...I (seriously) would get the 7.9 oz UDAP bear spray. You can carry a 12ga into Canada, but has to be registered. The Canada customs guy looked at my UDAP can and said "good idea". Unless you can accuratly draw a bead on a 30mph bear commin your way (seems like 300mph!!) I'd go for the 30' spray can. They are so fast (Black, Brown or Grizzly) that I think the spray has proved to be more effective in deterence from attack than a gun - regardless of caliber. Go to the UDAP site - it will give you all the data and helpfull hints. I don't travel/camp anywhere without it. Works on skunks and mad raccoons as well. j

Here is an opportunity for a product. The bear spray seems to need a holster. They have a waist/belt holster and chest holster. I would think a belt holster for off the bike and a (new product) motorcycle holster for easy access while on the bike.

I think the rally stays in hotels most or all of the nights.

My main concern would be a breakdown/accident in an isolated area.

UDAP comes with holster - and you're right Alchemy, it ain't just for the overnights in the great wildlife infested outdoors. While WL is half the reason I ride - one can have encounters, while ON the bike, that ain't adventageous to the 2 legged species. I keep mine velcro'd to the OUTSIDE of the tank bag. My riding partner "bumped" a cinnamon black bear while hard on the brakes up in the NWT last month. I was behind about 200' - fortunatly the bear was sufficiently terrified (almost as much as us) to head for the brush. Happened in a blink - they are seriously fast animals when "inspired".

Short question? Idiot me, bought the original saddlebags instead of Touratech.
Will I need saddlebags for the Trip anyhow?
Planing on stay a couple more weeks across the big ocean. Or how about the Buell bag pack that mounts to the triple tail? In my understanding luggage will be carried in a support vehicle. But I will have the major tools, some water, sweater etc. with me. Opinions, please. Ride safe Werner
P.S I found some of the rare gravel roads in Germany to practice.

Werner:

Glad to hear that you found some practice roads.

Right now, it might be a good plan on at least a top box, for the Uly. I'm not certain that we will need a complete side/top box combo for this trip.

You can send/ship the bike to the US with the Cases, remove them in Kirtland, and reinstall once you are riding around the States.

Give this some thought and see what the other have as input.

@ Buelldualsport,
just have the sidecases. Not the full combo. I don't like topcases. would be great, if I could leave the sidecases in Kirtland. By the way, how far is Kirtland from Seattle? Ride safe Werner

Those aggressive footpegs from American Sportbike are awesome when it gets wet and muddy. A bit pricey for footpegs, but way better than a broken ankle in the middle of Alaska.

Aux lighting aint needed for going north in the Summer. The further north you go, the more the sun shines. Unless you are riding at 11Pm at night, you will never need your headlight.

You might need a sleeping eye mask if you are in a tent....

Jphish- I have them and like Ulynut says they are awesome compared to stock. I do not like the fact that they don't have the drop that the stock pegs do. I feel like the bike has less of the legroom that I loved it for.

I talked to Al about it- he says that he is working on getting a true direct replacement made with the drop. Suppliers have their own agenda sometimes I guess. When he gets them in I will be first in line to get them!

Based on all the crash details I have seen with the bags on, I have been tempted to run with them on. I would rather sacrifice my $350 bags than my frame.

Bags, lightly loaded may indeed be a good idea for "tip over" protection.

Too much "stuff" and you are increasing the weight of the bike.

Roostre - Thanks for the foot peg response. Thats the same problem the wider Touratech pegs. I like my current foot position so...My riding partner has a R1200GS with Pegs (don't remember the brand - not Touratech) that has allen set screws, acting as studs, on the foot surface. Mud, water, snow - they still grip regardless. I mean NO slippage at all! I'm going to drill, tap & loctite 6 on to each peg - should do the trick. I'll let folks know how it goes after the peg make over.

The 09 Uly's have new "sawtooth pattern" black footpegs. Photo on buell.com looks the same, but I think they just photoshopped the 07/08 peg photo. Maybe they'll turn out to be just what you're looking for.

Yeah - Hard to know exactly what changes might have been made. The ones in the photo look the same...just different color. Perhaps cityxslicker has been able to actually eyeball one and can give us a heads up. When you live in rain country 'sticky' foot pegs are a safety issue...not an option.

Looked at the 09 pegs and look pretty much the same to me. There may be more details coming however.

As I have been mulling the options, I noted that my feet/boots are wider than the existing pegs particularly when on the balls of my feet. The outer edge is higher than the rest of the peg so my boots rest mostly on that edge and the inner part of the peg.

The outer edge is smooth (almost polished on mine) and I think it might be possible to file in some points/teeth on the outer edge that might add some traction as well as act as a boot scraper (perhaps).

There is also a lot of metal at the end of the peg and it would be a good spot to try the setscrew approach.

Jphish,
Sorry for the delay. The American Sport Bike pegs are about 3/4" higher. It is noticeable, but for me, not a big deal. I have a 34" inseam and it is still comfortable.

Thanks Ulynut - Only 30" inseam here, so I need the pegs to mount the bike... and don't need no stinkin slippage! The Uly's already a bit on the tall side for me so 3/4 of an inch shorter may be quite tolerable. Might match my short legs.
