I have an '06 Uly. I liked the concept and the looks but what a terrible bike!Handles like shit, "Own the Corners"? Who thought up that one?
It needs far too many mods to make it usable and you lot seem happy with this? A new bike should be right straight out the packet surely.
I've tried but failed and it's for sale. The depreciation is crazy, trade in value after 10 months was half and it's like new and only done 3k miles. I'll try and sell private but nobody will want it. People are actually laughing at it. Talk about throwing money away.

What have you "tried"?

Have owned many many bikes over the years, started buying Buells in 99.

Won't be without at least one, maybe two.

What issue have you had?

Informed minds would like to know

Other than the horrible tires the bike comes with in 06, it is perfect. I only modded my bike because I wanted to make it even more unique. About the handling, throw on any other tire and dial in the suspension, and your good to go! I am looking at picking up another Uly, but I don't think it will enjoy the ride across the Atlantic. : )

Stevie,

What condition are your tyres in?
If they're badly worn, mis-matched or under-inflated I can see how this would affect the handling.

Have you set up the suspension for the weight of you and your riding gear?
It's worth weighing yourself with ALL your riding gear and luggage (if carried) and setting the suspension to the factory handbook-it's not that much of a hassle.

Are your forks and rear shock in serviceable condition?
Got the right amount of oil in the forks? Are the seals intact?
I can't see the rear shock would be knackered already.

Have you checked the wheel bearings (known to be a problem sometimes)?
How about the steering head bearings and swingarm bushes?

How tall are you?
If your legs are REALLY long I can see that on very long journeys they might ache.
I scoot forward in the saddle for town and scratching rides.
On motorways I move back in the saddle and the wind blast keeps the weight off my arms.

If it's not the right bike for you then that's fair enough and I hope you can find one that suits you better.

Good luck.

You're kidding, right? Somehow the finest handling motorcycle I have ever owned, handles like shit for you?

The D616s are not great tires, but even with those my bike handled better than any other I have owned, and that includes a Ducati, several Yamahas, and several BMWs.

The only thing I can tell you is, the dealer must have screwed the setup royally and you have not followed the manual on setting up the suspension, and possibly the steering head bearing is not properly torqued.

What exactly is it doing that qualifies as "handles like shit"?

I've tried but failed and it's for sale. The depreciation is crazy, trade in value after 10 months was half and it's like new and only done 3k miles. I'll try and sell private but nobody will want it. People are actually laughing at it. Talk about throwing money away.

That is God's way of letting you know that this is a trial you were meant to go through and overcome, rather than bail on. IMHO.

"Sniff, Sniff."

Smells like troll.

I'd say that someone could benefit from a run through the owners manual and some riding lessons.

+1

Sounds like he's used to non-adjustable suspensions. Hell, I can make it handle like crap, too. Put a passenger on the bike without adjusting the suspension. Did it once for a short hop with my son and I about wet my pants at the first curvy bit I hit at speed.

In his profile (2 posts):
How can Buell improve their motorcycles?: Better suspension set up at start
Easier front fork set up
Should be no need to change anything from the start (more standard parts)

This fella is truly lost. Though trollish, it sounds as if he is just taking out his real frustration on us. Somebody (Edinburgh H-D, for instance?) didn't educate him in the least on setting up the easy-to-set-up forks and rear shock by the easy-to-read owner's manual chart. I wonder what parts he felt he needed besides the "standard parts" - a voltmeter?

Or... they tried and gave up and took his money and hoped he would never return. Always a possibility. Had a customer or two like that. Some respond by trying to piss them off badly enough they never come back. Not a good strategy, but understandable.

This is getting good...

I rode a rented naked BMW R850R (well, hand guards, but that was it for protection) for 800+ miles all over Scotland for 6 days. The wind blew so hard and the rain pounded down so much on me that I'm not surprised he's having issues with handling!

I would have loved a Uly over there (with heated grips).

Damn! I tried soooo hard to ignore this thread!!!

Steviebiker, you cannot make a statement like that without quantifying it. What do you mean by "handles like shit"? It needs correct set-up for YOU, by YOU. Now there is a novel concept! Try it, maybe you will learn something about motorcycle physics and dynamics.

I notice in your profile, you list handling as a problem. If you don't feel competent about reading the manual, get your dealer to do it. The forks and rear suspension couldn't be easier to set-up, it truly is user friendly. RTM and you will see that the guesswork has been taken out of suspension set-up.

You also list windblast as an issue, well you did buy a naked bike.......!!!!

The riding position is good, but, like most bikes, it is a personal thing and there is no real leeway for adjustment without buying different bars.

I agree that depreciation is high, but then again, I bought mine at a discount, (£2,200 below list), so you can't have it both ways.

Just ride it mate!

The first few retorts were all offering suggestions for improving the riding experience of this Scot. They degraded a little bit, but that tends to happen when the moto-media continues to berate a wonderful motorcycle and even better company. Where else are you going to find people willing to help when the introduction is "Your bike sucks..."

Badweb and the people I've met through Buell is the reason I am back for round three.

A troll is a troll and a roll is a roll. If we don't smell no trolls then we don't get no roll's! NUTS

yeah, come on down to buelltoberfest and I will pleased to show you how we haul the mail on a ULY.

Mine 06 is bone stock. I even like the stock tires. It will scoot along just fine. I kinda like the looks, but I have always been a muppets fan.

Buells don't handle well? Obviously the OP is either ignorant or a troll or both. There are a lot of legitimate complaints about our bikes but poor handling...you have got to be joking!
