Anyone got any pictures of mounting sites/methods of fitting a ZUMO 550?

I have tried the front brake clamp method, (too clumsy), the U clamp, (fouls my Buell tank bag/instruments) and the mirror mount, (insufficient thread length for security).

I'm open to suggestions!

Garmin 276c with blue chart. Works on the bike, boat, car, truck and on foot. I use ram mounts on the bike.

We purchased the Powerlet Power Mount along with their RAM mount for Zumo/2720.

Mounts to handle bars and has a power outlet as part of the mount. Solid and waterproof mounting system.

I have the Zumo 450 (Don't even use the audio, so didn't spend the money on the bluetooth part of it), the Buell Quest, and the Quest 2.

I bought the Buell quest because I updated my firmware on the Zumo two days before leaving for March Badness and the update made the unit a boat anchor. I priced waterproof (very important!) GPS units and they were the same price as the Buell unit. The mount works great because it fits well on the Uly and doesn't use up the front power accessory plug. However, there are some important limitations on the Quest.

It only has a limited amount of memory, so you have to load in the maps you want from a computer. I recently had a talk with Garmin when I updated the unit with the 2009 maps. It uses the older map system, which also aren't quite as detailed. The 2009 version of the maps is probably going to be the last year for the older style maps. The Quest 2 uses the same NT style maps the Zumo does so you don't have to worry for a while that those maps will not be updated (although you still need a separate license to update every unit).

Now, if you can find a Buell mount, look around for the Quest 2. Same design, but can store all the US and Canada within the unit, so you don't have to update the unit with maps every time you go out somewhere. I found the Quest 2 refurbished for under $150, so I bought it. However, it was another $70 just for current maps. : (

One other caution. The Buell Quest came with a wall adapter to charge the unit should you decide to do so. The Quest 2 no longer has that adapter, you have to charge the unit in a car or bike and the power comes from the mount, which is unlike some units that you can plug into a universal power adapter to charge.

The Zumo (replacement unit from Garmin) stays on my BMW RT and now with the Quest 2, I really don't think there is much difference. Certainly not enough difference to justify the cost difference. However, if you want bluetooth and other bells and whistles, then you might want the Zumo. I do like the larger screen, but not so much so that I think it's worth the extra money. But, if you're using the unit for music, cell phone, XM radio and all those things, then it probably makes sense.

Good luck to you!

Wayne

Can't say it's my favorite because I've never owned another personal GPS but I'm very happy with my Garmin 2610. Two plus years old with no problems and it's seen plenty of rain.

I bought mine as a reman after the model was discontinued. Installed a 2GB CF card with all of the maps. Very easy to use...doesn't have any of the extra bells and whistles that I wouldn't use anyway (like BT).

I use a RAM mount and have it wired "hot" to the Centech fuse block so that I can mess with it w/o having to turn the key "on."

Quick search shows $160 on eBay shipped. Can't beat that!

How is the thread length insufficient on the mirror mount?

I mounted my quest by fabricating a simple but stout plate that bolts to the mirror hole (12mm bolt?) and goes up at a right angle to bolt to the RAM cradle. Stout as can be.

The mirrors had previously been moved to bar ends, so that hole was just plugged anyway.

I have a writeup and details here somewhere...

Helmetbolt and Buelldualsport, thanks for your tips and suggestions.

Reepicheep, I bought the RAM mount, (RAM-B-252U) for the mirror mount and I thought this would be perfect to mount on the left side. I have Tuono mirrors mounted in Kawasaki KLR ant-vibration mounts, but when I use the RAM mount, in my opinion, there is too little thread left to secure the mount.

I would be happy to be proven wrong on this, as it would be the ideal mounting point!

I mounted my Zumo 450 on the Uly that I rented from Hal's in exactly the same place as Helmetbolt posted above.

I routed the power cable beneath the airbox cover and under the seat to plug into the outlet under the seat... the cable routing was perfect and the plug is a bit more out of the weather that way.

Good location. Good visibility. I could even move to the right when riding 2-up so Sunny could look at the display.

Zumo 450 gets my vote.

Search some of the other GPS threads, there are TONS of opinions... but you know what they say Opinions are like don't you?

I didn't use the whole ram mount, just the cradle, bolted to a piece of 90 degree bent steel. The cradle goes directly to the steel bracket on one side, a hardware store bolt (10mm?) goes through the steel bracket on the other and bolts it to the place where the mirror used to go.

Never tried the whole ram mount setup with the balls, seemed unnecessary (and I am a cheapskate ; ) ).

I am planning to mount a ram ball on the master cylinder bracket for my GPS, what size and length bolts should I get to make up for the thickness of the base?

Cheap and simple, and quickly can be switched to different vehicles. I used stock cradle from the quest 2, made a ball mount using a brass lamp pull knob, same size ball as the car mount suction cup and pre drilled. U clamped to handle bars. total cost less than 5$ dollars for mounting. Made 3 mounts use on Electroglide, Buell and the schwinn. And can pop into car quickly.

That's how I have my Zumo 550 mounted on my 12R no room on the clutch side I had to file the nub on the master cylinder mount to get it to fit but works great not in the way of my dash or fuel cap. Only thing is it's little tough having to reach across to work it with the left hand but otherwise it works great! As far as replacement parts for the Quest I'd check with Garmin as they make the unit Buell uses

Seems Buell added the Zumo 550 as part of the '09 accessories. The price isn't all that attractive, but now there is a Buell designed mount. I wonder if there is any way to order just the mount? Now that would be cool.

You will more than likely find that it is a RAM rebadged as a Buell Mount

They never are. BMW also badges a Zumo, check that babe out. If you're feeling really brave you are welcome to pick up the tab for the replacement Mercedes-Benz floor mats I bought yesterday . . . I'm betting I'd have been better off to buy them some place other than the dealer but I was there, they were detailing the wife's car and it was convenient and they have the cool logo.

I bought my Zumo far cheaper than the Buell number and the Amazon number. . . but if I had a Buell and could get the unit as part of an integrated package I'd pop for the little extra . . . I mean we ARE the folks who replace ultra-light front fenders with carbon fiber units for a lot more $$.

I think if is VERY cool that Buell is doing what they are with the Uly accessory line.

By the way . . try pricing solid red tail light lens for a 2008 Porsche and you'll croak.

I posted this on advrider with zero response.

Amazon hes the 450 for 399.00

Would you rather have the zumo 450 or a refurbished Street Pilot 2720 for 150.00?
I am leaning towards the 2720, even new the 2720 are 298.00 on amazon.

I know they are discontinues but alot of people seem to like them over the zumo software having had both.

Sorry if this doesn't belong here. Small gps talk...

The Buell Zumo price isnt that bad, assuming its the Zumo 550. Yes it costs more than what i paid for my normal Zumo 550, but not that much more. Oh, and it comes with Buell dealer POI's already : )

edit:
92393-08Y KIT, BUELL GPS ZUMO 550 Retail Price:$879.95
So it is a 550, badweb discount brings it to just under 800 : )

Here's my Zumo 550 Ram mount...

It gives you Center or Left positioning and keeps the ball out of the way when not in use. I think I'm using a 3" Ram link. The one that comes with the Zumo is a short one (1.5"?).

Be sure to check the MapSource version. I looked at one 2720 and it came with version 7. You need at least version 8.
