So yeah I've seen everything or just about as of tonight on my ride home from work. I pulled out of my parking lot and noticed an X1 in my mirror so I slowed down a bit to let him catch up and we pulled up to a stop light. No Sh*t he pulls up to the stoplight and says "What is that thing!" I think he's joking at first and I say its a Ulysses he kind of sits silent for a bit and then asks what size engine it has. So I tell him its a 1203 and then the light turned green and he was gone. He seemed like a good guy and enthusiastic about Buells (sporting a nice wheelie on the X1) but holy cow, its not like there are 50 models of Buells here. Anyway I just thought it was a bit crazy and wanted to post about it. | ||

There are individuals who only know about the item they purchased and really don't care about anything beyond that item. It's like people who buy a Rolex watch simply because they other people wearing them, and it's the only brand of watch they recognize. If you ask them about any other model of Rolex, they have no clue. If you ask them about any other watch marque, they have no clue. It's the equivalent to being passionate about knowing the time but not really caring how you get the time. Some folks like to ride, but they don't really have a passion for motorcycles. Conversely, there are folks who are crazy about customizing and modifying their bikes, but really don't like to ride that much. These are the folks who buy a new bike, farkle the hell out of it, and then sell it with less than 2,500 miles on the clock. Weird. | ||

I've come across people on Blasts before who just ended up with them because they were inexpensive first bikes. No idea what a Buell was and never been in an HD dealership. | ||

He could have very well just purchased the X1. I haven't seen it in the area before so thats entirely possibly. If thats the case why would you purchase an X1 without having a knowledge of the bikes though? I mean the X1 probably goes for a little bit more cash than the million ZX6r's and R6's and CBR's. If I remember right there was a pretty limited number of the X1's. It was certainly a beautiful bike though. I think I was eyeing his bike up just as much as he was the Uly. I do know if I could afford one I would have it sitting in my garage. | ||

Latest Fuell magazine claims 661 X1M Lightning Millenium edition bikes built in year 2000. 1999-2002 Buell produced 11,228 X1 Lightnings. Not so rare as the our ULYs which are currently scarcer with only 6489 X's and 831 XT's plus I'm sure a few more since they sent those numbers to the publisher. | ||

Well holy cow I guess I had no idea they made so many of the X1. Thats a cool bit of info. Maybe I should take it easy on the guy since the Uly is more scarce than his X1  | ||

I had a BMW rider/friend who is a past local BMW Club president tell me he did not know Harleys/ Buells had pushrods and to top it off asked, "Are Harleys 2 stroke?"....he was serious.... | ||

Wonder if he know's boxer BMWs have pushrods too. Well, except for the newest 1200S uber twin they made. They did OHC in that engine. | ||

Some people just know what they ride. A friend of mine who rides all over, Alaska, Yellow knife etc, rides old BMW air heads and Triumphs, Nortons. Has no knowledge of new bikes, So I have to educate him.  | ||

I'm new here, but are you guys seriously able to identify all 29 Buell models on site?? So there are probably people like you who are Buell fanatics and then people like me, who just want to ride, and respect the Buell line as a favorable product. There have been over 118 thousand Buells produced (118,659 total as per the Summer 2008 edition of Fuell Magazine). I would think the ability to recognize a bike as a Buell would be considered good enough, and then the desire to ask questions ("what model is that") would be great! | ||

Well as of 3 years ago I knew ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about Buell. To add to my ignorance/arrogance I was told they were made in East Troy (I live about an hour and a half north of there) and I had no frickin idea where the heck East Troy even was. For all I knew it was a suburb of Detroit or something. Over the last three years though and 5 buells later my knowledge base has greatly increased. By no means do I consider myself an expert and never will, but I think for most Buellers you kind of get a passion for finding out as much as you can about past, present, and future Buells. My wife refers to it as OCD, I call it a passion | ||

I'm new here, but are you guys seriously able to identify all 29 Buell models on site?? It's an amazing thing to watch. I've got a friend who can do it with cars. You show him a picture and he will say "Thats a 2004 Ford Focus. You can tell because they did XXX that year." I'm always amazed that he can cram that much knowledge in his head. It has taken me a while to be able to identify the Buells, and I'm still not good with the tubers. Here are some rules of thumb: 1 - Muffler under bike => Probably a Buell. 2 - Does it have an Aluminum spar frame => It's an XB. There are two models, the R (Firbolt) and the S (Lightning). The S models have a little flat front windscreen. The R models have more of a fairing. They also have headlights embedded in the fairing. 3 - Does it have a frame made of steel tubes. => It's a "tuber." I can't differentiate between them. 4 - Is it a single cylinder bike that looks sort of like and lightning? => Blast. | ||

Yes. Actually i am embarrased, i mistook a RS1200 for a S3 back over the winter. I never thought i would ever see one in person.
I can do that with XB Buells and most GM cars, but thats bout it. Won lots of free lunches with the useless info. "Hey check out that 75 Trans AM. What do you mean its a 73? Its gotta be a 75, my uncle had one, i will bet you lunch." Victory never tasted so sweet. | ||

Give me a Buell or a Shelby-Dodge, and I can usually nail it. Although I am a bit shaky on some of the early/late RS differences, but I'm coming along now that I had a chance to actually see a couple of the unicorns in person at Homecoming.... My wife used to call it a 'problem' too, but then she came to Homecoming with me and she's getting the bug now that she's met the people and gotten more of the whole story. Doesn't ride (yet), but now she's asking me what's up on Badweb, who's posting, are there any good new pictures...kinda cool, but there goes one of my "solitude" hobbies LOL. | ||

Rat, Solitude hobbies only lead to the wife nagging you about spending money! Although the other aspect, you will have to split the money with her to "share" the hobby. |
