I called my local HD dealer and noted that both of my latches were broke and I had heard that there was a recall or fix for the bad latches. The woman I was speaking to took a moment to look for some info on the latches and then told me "no problem, I'll order them. When they get here please bring in your broken ones so I can send them back". Replacement latches were free of charge (and I hadn't even purchased the bags from them) and were well out of warranty.

Absolutely no problem.

Have your dealer contact SPOC. If you get a chance send me your VIN and contact info (you and the dealer) and I'll give them the heads up.

Court,
I called my dealer and the parts guy, Rick, called SPOC. SPOC then told Rick that they knew nothing about replacing these latches and would need a call from you. Thanks.

Speaking of latches, are the replacements any better than the originals? Or is it just another thin piece of plastic standing between me and a bad day?

I ask, partially because I just had one fixed (free under warranty) and if the new ones are not as crappy I should probably get the other one replaced also.

Court, is this something that is covered only if my latches break (haven't yet anyway... tick tock, tick tock...), or could I do it as a preventative measure?

Court,
I taught an MSF ERC today but was able to call Dillon Brothers late today to give Rick the parts guy the name and phone number you gave me. Now it's wait to see what happens. I've got my fingers crossed

Court has come through once again. I fully expected to have to buy the part but he gave me a name and number at the Buell Factory to give to my dealer, which I did. Bruce Champion, from Buell even called me and left a message to give him a call. I just spoke with him. Great guy. Told me a bit of the history about the part in question. They've been working with the bag manufacturer and apparently are on the umpteenth iteration of this particular latch. Anyway, the part is being provided to me under an extended warranty. Sounds like a winner to me. Thanks again Court.

It is how Buell works.

Enjoy.

Reposting, I think it got lost in the discussion.

No reason you couldn't order a kit using the number above if you wanted to keep a spare on hand.

In terms of warranty, I can't speak for anyone but doubt they warrant a "just in case" claim.

Frankly, for $19.95 I'd think any dealer selling Ulysses would keep one in stock.

Good 'nuff. I thought perhaps there was a service bulletin on the latches (recall); maybe there is, on an as-failed basis?

If only you were in charge of all the Buell dealerships. ; )

My guess is that if you called all the Badweb sponsors, 10% might have them in stock.

>>>>If only you were in charge of all the Buell dealerships.

They are still recovering from my stint with customer service . . they'll be in therapy for years to come.

: )

I'm a bit of a "results driven" sort of a guy . . . to quote Bob Athey, who wrote my recommendation to The White House. . . "Court is a guy who can come up with a marching band at 6:30am on a Sunday morning with 30 minutes notice".

There recovery is impeded by my constantly sticking my nose in . . . I'm trying to quit . . really I am!

I've contacted the two dealers in my area (Sun and Rocky Mountain). Both seem clueless on this issue. I've been using a bungee cord for 6 months now. What is SPOC?

No reason this can't be resolved in a day.

Drop me an e-mail with your contact info, VIN/year/model and your dealers contact info.

We'll get you fixed up pronto.

On the subject of bag part malfunctions, I broke the strap/cable things which hold the outside half of the case horizontal when opened. Turns out if you've got something heavy in the bag...like, say, a toolkit, it can cause a rapid opening and a nasty *snap* sound.

Anyone figure out how to repair this?

I have had no problems until the right side bag latch broke (easily) 07/23/08. Out of warranty on 05/06/08. I was almost disgusted until I found the issue on the forum. Court is on it so I am putting away the glue/rivets. Heck it would have been a reasonable fix even without Court's help. Nice to see that the latch's are replaceable and even reasonably priced.

Court, Thanks a bunch. Spells
