Count me in!!! As long as the US Army cooperates 2010 is a long way off. I'll be in for a good time back to the north country. I was stationed up in Fairbanks for a while and those roads are great to drive in my Subaru, but to do on my ULY would be awsome!! To be honest the pricing is great for the support they give you in a remote area of the northwest. If you ever thought about doing AK this would be a great way to see it and have the confidence to know you have a support if you break down. | ||

Looks like mostly pavement and hardpack. I dont see anything that a ULY couldnt handle. It looks like a fun ride. | ||

I'd like to give it a go and be a part of team Uly! $2000 is not too bad for what you get. My bike will have about 30K on it by then, but I don't see that being too big of a factor. | ||

The wife already gave me the OK and said you want to do it start saving now, so I pocketed the change from dinner!!!!! Around $5 per dinner and I'll have this paid for in no time!!!! But dead serious this will be the ride for the summer in 2010. I've never done a rally but I figure between now and then I could get some practice runs somewhere. If we run as a "team" then we all don't realy need to carry all the support parts everyday IE everyone doesn't have carry their own drive belt. (Message edited by rotorhead on July 05, 2008) | ||

I guess it time to get the passport renewed. My wife told me to go for it. The biggest question in my mind is; Will a tire company stand up and make some 17" tires that are up to this type of riding by then? | ||

A colleague did the Alcan in 2007. I will check with him for some advice. Right now I can safely say that our 17" front wheel is a significant disadvantage. Dan reported lots and lots of rain, accompanied by lots of mud and rutted roads. Mark in Arizona | ||

It looks as if they stuck to many of the main roads for the entire rally. The Cassiar HWY does have some dirt spots as does the Denali HWY and the top of the world HWY and anywhere they are doing any logging wet or dry will be a small challenge for a Uly to get through but all doable. The AlCan HWY is all paved from start to stop no worries on that road but logging around Ft Nelson. check out the mile post site http://milepost.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage &Itemid=1 for some PDF maps and info. It was a life saver when driving to the lower 48 in early April. | ||

If KTM 950/990s can make the trip, a Uly will also. Tires might be a challenge, however, new products are coming on the market every day. Might need to cut some weight off the Uly to make it a bit easier to handle for long days on the bike/ | ||

Spares,tires, tools, radios, GPS and etc can be divided up between several riders. ALCAN organizers will transmit X pounds of "Stuff" per rider, thus making the logestics a lot easier for a "team". | ||

You guys should have no problems doing that trip on a Uly. We made that trip 6 years ago starting from Miami, Fl., 2-up on a Vmax. Have fun!  | ||

Cccpull This will be a bit more more involved than just getting there. SOme time distance stages, transit stages that might be 500 miles to the next timed stage. But yes we agree the Uly Family of bikes will make the ride. Give it some thought and come along. Add a name in the Post for the Team name if you get a chance. Might be a good idea to have support carry a spare Uly rear wheel/axle/swingarm unless BMC fixes the problem by then...  I would also definitely start with newer fork seals and boots. This looks like a whole lot of fun and I'm definitely interested, some sort of windfall needs to present itself to me however...  | ||

Great idea Spares will/can be divided up between Team riders and carried by the Support/Sweep vehicles. Have thought about stashing various major bits with Buellers along the route, and pick them up as needed. Kinda like caching needed parts along the way. Might be a great opportunity for the BRAN network to take part in the event. There is a great group of ADV riders spread across the North West Regions of the country. WE had a group of Hoggies do it last year on ULtras and Kings, I am sure the ULY can handle it. They said there was nothing up there road condition wise that we didnt have locally. A good fresh pair of Syncs should get the job done. | ||

Buelldualsport, I understand what you're saying, but I was referring to the actual bikes capability in that terrain. I can tell you after doing 2-up (not to mention 2-up luggage) on the Vmax 14k miles with some over 600 mile days, 1-up on a Ulysses looks real doable, heck even 2-up. BTW The Cassiar Highway and Destruction Bay roads were terrible and a ton of construction. Again this was 6 years ago, it might be smooth sailing now. | ||

I just printed the entry form. The website states that starting order will be determined by the order entries are received with preference given to past winners and participants. Do we wanna think about starting together or stay spread out? Also there are two options for routes...??? | ||

Rooster: Bike teams are responsible for to keep track of their own, so it does not seem to me to make a big difference. When the time comes, the route can be a Team choice. I have no doubt a Uly can do this but....comparing a Uly to a KTM is like comparing a Honda CRV to a Jeep Rubicon. The KTM is and always will be more capable of a bike than the Uly. Unless Eric Buell realizes some of us want a off road package and liquid cooling with a Uly instead of the 1125r that is tha laughter of the sportbike world. | ||

Unless there is hard core 6-12" mud for miles on end, the Uly will be fine. I've run mine on deep gravel, light mud, stream crossings, chunk rocks, etc. all on street tires. You have to get used to weighting the bike differently than a dirt bike and you won't get to do it at the same pace, but I believe the ALCAN can be done by a ULY quite handily. Lesser bikes have done it. The struggle is going to be to make sure that the logistics are there. We'd need spare tires, belts, stators, voltage regulators, bearings, and tools to say the least. I have three sets of wheels that we could use. | ||

Right you are !! Wheels and other hard parts can be UPS/Fed EX shipped to the overnight hotel stops. Major repairs can be planned with the help of the BRAN network. We just bought two (2) sets of wheels from a local Uly rider, assuming that Buell will not change the wheels used in the next year or so. Each bike can carry a spare belt, the Sweep truck will carry two (2) tires per bike, small tools and on track replacement bits can be carried by each rider. We have the required 151 Mhz radios and other necessary stuff for communications. Each rider may want a GPS on individual bikes, or maybe a couple for the Group? All good ideas | ||

For low warehouse en route support, the Appalachian Trail model works. Pack light and update supplies at depot stops. Ship used and un-needed items back. Pick up the new stuff. Works great for clothes, snacks, etc. as well as replacement parts. |
