Thanks.
I plan on visiting the dealer again this week. I just got into messing with ecmspy so I am planning on checking the before and after!

After 7 tank fills on a 1250 mile trip, I got 42 mpg after the re-flash, which is what I was getting before the patch install. Also, now my speedometer is 3-4 mph off. I see we have have a thread for that.

If you have not done so already, do it!
My ride in to work this morning was great.
No hiccups, nice linear power output from 2000-up.

This is a really worthwhile update!
The more I drive it, the more I feel happy : )

Was just at the Buell/Harley Dealership today with the wife. We're thinking of buying an 08xt. I asked the salesman if the beta patch would be included with the purchase and he said no. At least I asked. Also, he said unless Buell is saying it has to be done than I'd have to pay for it. If I do have to pay for it...is the 08BetaPatch worth it?

That's just silly...

The patch is a NON CHARGEABLE item from HD.

That salesman knows not of what he speaks.

Well, two salesman at the dealership confirmed for me that I'd have to pay for it. Even if I bought that brand new red 08xt sitting on the floor. It is kind of discouraging now, I might wait a year like I had planned. I can't believe they can't spare 15 minutes to load that on the bike if it means selling the bike.

They are a nice dealership though and the buell salesman knew about the patch. He is an active member on badweb.

I don't know if I should buy the bike or not now.

I just took my bike in for service. I need an updated clutch cable holder/clutch cable. I asked the service guy about the new update and he said that every time a bike comes in for service they check for map updates and load them in.

Sounds like Buell needs to get off their ass and get the confirmation of this out to their dealers, dealer staff, and their customers ASAP. With this gasoline price crunch on us all, they would seem to have an opportunity to be real hero's. Can you figure the amount of foreign oil this would save?

Conchop You are 100% right. I cant belive the things I see people wright on this forum. I have an 08 uly also, haven't done the patch though. I'm afraid to screw with it. Since breaking in, the low end performance has gotten better. Could also be that I'm learning to drive around it.Slippin the clutch more than I normally would and so forth.Perhaps it's better to wait and see if buell does something that actually helps or hurts

Clearly there is some kind of communication/customer service problems going on....Maybe they lost insight on communicating the customer service part.
Is the 08Uly Beta patch from Buell?

Bingman, yes it is right from Buell. Odds are its the same map that the 2009s will come with.

i don't know yet for sure BUT , the tech had mentioned he may be able to "fine tune" the newly released beta patch with the digital tech laptop , just for kick's i'm going back this saturday to see , i still have a very tiny slight surge at 2800 rpm steady throttle in low gears , otherwise working fine unlike before

BTW what is the updated clutch cable and holder Cdale136 speaks of , part of my clutch cable holder attached at the frame is just spinning on the cable near the exhaust

Went in for a tire and got the flash! It's not obvious to the tech until he hooks up to your bike then there it is.

I think I'm still going to buy the bike. The local dealership is really good and their sales team as always treated me right. I don't think there is much haggling with these Buell bikes. You get what you pay for...American bike.
I think the service dept. has more to do with the beta patch anyways?>right

The clutch cable retainer in pre-09 Buells is made of wire and bolted to the isolator/motor mount. The 08 XB12XT has a more stout piece that is more resistant to breakage. My 08 Uly lost the retainer and fried the cable on the exhaust at about 300 miles. I'm waiting for the revised XT part to come in so I can get my new cable threaded in. I'll ask him to throw it on the digital tech too! NUTS

Bingman,

My salesman (Joe Goetz a.k.a. Ratbuell at Frederick HD, Frederick MD) researched the whole reflash deal for me and arranged for the reflash without me even having to make an appointment. I rode in at my convenience and they took me right away. I arrived at the dealer and 25 minutes later I was done.

IMO the sales team is not treating you right. Why would they jerk you around about a procedure that cost them nothing but about 5 minutes of a techs time?

The sales team sells things.
The reflash is a non-billable item.
There is nothing for them to sell.

Go to the service department, do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

Make sure to give the sales guys a finger or two when you're done.

There is nothing for them to sell.

WRONG.

There is customer service. It is an intangible item, but like the credit card ads say...it's "priceless".

And just to toot my own horn...read 2 posts up : ) Thanks Ron, glad it's running well for you. I'm trying to find something out about the speedo for you too; I'll ask at the factory this week.

I'll ask at the factory this week.

Hey Joe, while you're at it, could you ask them if it's true that the patch
was only for XBs manufactured after a certain date?
Oh yeah, and Buell's take on Uly wheel bearings?

I know the patch is for '08 only, because it's a totally different set of software in the 08s versus the earlier (up to 07) XBs. A quick rundown:

08 - crank trigger ignition, no base timing adjustment, higher redline, AIS motor on throttle body, automatic TPS and AFV adjustment by the computer, no manual adjustment available, automatic idle speed setting thru the computer via AIS motor.

early XB - cam sensor pickup ignition, base timing adjustable by rotating a cam plate, no AIS motor on throttle body, manual TPS and AFV resets required, manual idle speed adjust via cable.

08 sofware no worky in early bikes.

Got my 08 flashed last Saturday. Techs
didn't know it was upgradeable until they
checked online.

Took it out on a ride up to Snoq Pass and back - cruising at 80-90 - and riding to
work in Redmond - 40 - 50 on the surface
streets and 70-80 on the freeway.

It clearly wants to run! MPG was 43 vs 40
before. I wasn't driving in a fuel conscious manner either. I've got to slow down before
I get into trouble!!!

Rahbert,

Who did the patch on your bike?

I need to call them and see if they can do mine......

Good luck on slowing down.

I was referring to Reedracers earlier post:

My dealer informed me that the Beta patch wasn't for all 08 Uly's .Does this sound right?? They told me it was by date of manufacture , mine was made Sept 07 and the patch wasn't applicable.

I only bring it up because my '08 was an early production model and so far the patch has not increased my mpg but did mess up my speedometer.

The re-flash did not affect my odometer. My 10.3 mile commute is still 10.3 miles. My GPS is out of town right now, so I cannot verify the speedometer.

MPG looks better. The low fuel light came on at 168 today. That is about 10 miles more than usual. I will fill up on the commute home and report the result. Looks like a two to three mpg increase.

well I just got gas and I gained 3 miles per.
I kept it above 80 for a good deal of that though.

Turns out to actually be a 4 mpg increase. MPG for my first reflash tank is 47.8. Considering that my previous average has been 43.6, it is a pretty good result. With the exception of one solely-highway tank at 47.9, this was the highest MPG achieved to date (4711 miles).

Here in Arizona we are on 10% to 15% ethanol all year 'round. Temperatures are pretty extreme right now. About 85 for the morning commute and 110+ in the afternoon.

Besides the improved fuel consumption, the Uly seems somewhat smoother running below 2500 rpm and may have a bit more roll-on power.

I spoke with the Buell Tech at my local dealer (where I purchased my 08 X). He said that this (the "y" patch) is the third one that has been released by Buell, and that each one has improved the engine management, in his opinion. He said that he applies the latest patch routinely to bikes that he services (Harleys and Buells, not just Ulys), as long as the engine-related farkles are bone stock. He won't do it if there is a high flow filter, an airbox mod, non-stock exhaust, etc. By his body language, he might have included my SpecialOps heat blanket in this category!

I'm going to schedule an appt to get mine done (he said it takes about 20min). He doesn't charge for it, calling it a "driveability" issue.
