assuming the owner is not overfilling the tank, and the bike has 5,000+ miles on it and has 'loosened up,'...how much oil consumption is normal on a Uly/XB mill??

I am getting conflicting answers from shops, so I defer to your experiences.

Thanks.

I did the motoman break in. I change oil somewhere between 3K and 4K. I really don't keep track that closely.. but I can say this.

When I change oil I put 2.5 quarts .. and maybe a few more ounces. That leaves me with slightly less than 1/2 a quart. I have to add a few ounces now and then but have never had to use all of the left over 1/2 quart before the next oil change.

Same here... Hard break-in to seat the rings well and you won't burn much oil.

Maybe add a few ounces between changes.

Broke my '06 in by the Book, which Buell changed for '07. Very reserved break in, and when I finally was able to run it to 4k rpm man did I LIKE the rush!

I've used the HD 20-50 dino (briefly) and Syn-3 (briefly). Went to M1 V-Twin for a few changes and last winter went to M1 15-50 Auto for cold temps. Back now with M1 V-Twin 20-50.

Almost 50k on the clock and I change at 5k very regularly unless I'm on a trip in which I've changed earlier.

I don't have enough personal data for the HD dino but I know that the Syn3 and M1 15-50 Auto got dirty rather quickly and drained black at 5k. The V-Twin M1 always seems to drain a little clearer and more amber and smells better.

In any case all three synthetics have never taken more than 16oz added per 5k miles. That's better than ANY vehicle I've ever owned, two or four wheels!

Not sure what it's supposed to consume but...just did a 4000 mi trip with the dealer installed (@ 1000 mi service) syn3. used 12 oz total. Seems about normal. Switching to AMSoil 20/50 @ 6000 mi. j

11,400 miles or so on the bike now. I try and get the oil right to the top on the dipstick at each oil change.

I am usually a 1/16" to 1/8" above the "Add" line when I change my oil. (3500 miles- I use synthetics)

My Uly used a little oil each fill-up until the 5,000 mile service, then it suddenly stopped.

Oil consumption can vary wildly with oil type.

My bike consumed Castrol Syntec 5w50 like crazy.

Additional Info
I ran dino oil until about 8K. Then switched to Sync3 for an oil change and have been using Amsoil 20/50 ever since... currently just over 31K on the bike.

2006 Uly, broke in by the book, it would need a quart of Syn3 about every 2500 miles or so.

2006 Lightning Long, not sure how it was broken it, bought it used @ 15k, no oil usage.

Use Amsoil, and top it off, by that I mean half way up the oil stick. every 2k miles. Takes a few ounces. Followed a mix of hard break in and the owners manual (06).

keep it coming guys...I really appreciate it.

I am not interested in disclosing my consumption publicly, and my Uly has been a terrific motorcycle for anyone reading this, do not assume this means the bike is bad. The last thing I want to do is fuel more Buell speculation...but I am looking to see how I compare.

My 06 uses about 1/4 quart every 3000 miles or so. I run mobil-1 vtwin 20w50.

Mechanically speaking, slight oil consumption in a high compression engine is normal, especially if you red line it often. My wife's 07 Civic Si (11.0:1 compression ratio) uses about 1/4q every 3,000 too. (if I'm driving it that is)

With 41,000 ish miles and using mobil 1 20W50 factory 06 break in. My last run I used 1/2 quart in 7500 miles.(started the run with fresh oil) I found over the last 2 years my uly does not like to run at the full mark on the stick. About 3 X's down is the sweet spot so haven't topped off in a long time. When I did top it off it puked the oil until it settled 3 X's and never burned lower. Most engines have the sweet spot you just have to find it.

My 06' uses 1/2 to 3/4 (maybe 3/4) quart every 2.5-3k miles. Only has 4k miles on the odo, but for a big air-cooled jug engine ... not to bad from my expectations. Oil used is a semi-synth 15w-50.

Some R11-11.5 bikes drink oil until 30k miles so the buell is much better than this.

The only funny part is 2.5 quarts warm brings oil level to about 1/2 mark on the dip stick... 1/2 mark is 'full' I guess
