The new ECM flash ('08 XT) seems to have screwed up the accuracy of my speedometer. My speedo always tracked exactly with my Garmin 2720 GPS. I mean EXACTLY. Now the speedo reads about 4 mph off at 70 (70 ind. = 66 gps). I did a mile marker check of the odometer and it seems to be OK. I verified the speedo vs. gps on my way to the dealer for the reflash and caught the error almost immediately upon leaving the dealer. The only variable was the reflash. Is this adjustable using ECM spy?

Don't know about ECM spy, but my '06 always reads 4 mph faster by the speedo as compared to my ZUMO GPS. There have been reports similar to mine on this forum. I thought this to be strange in the times of electronic speedometers which should be easy to calibrate from the factory!

Mine is doing the same thing.
Before re-flash it matched my Garmin 478.
Now, its 3-4 mph above the GPS speed.

They fixed it for you! It should of been 4mph off from the factory like everyone else's. Look at it this way, When you blow by that cop at 70 indicated, he is less likely to pull out. : )

Does the odometer still match the GPS?
It would be kind of cruel if the mpg 'fix' is just making the speedo/odo sensor read as if the bike is covering more ground.

A 4 mph difference at 70mph is a 5.7% difference. If you were getting 40mpg prior to the reflash, and, assuming you have same error in your odometer as in your speedometer, you should expect to get 2.3mpg higher.

On a recent 1250 mile trip from SC to OH and back, both the bike odometer and the GPS trip computer read the same mileage.

And Froggy, I wouldn't mind if the re-flash made my once accurate speedometer inaccurate, if it would just increase my mpg. I've seen no change after 7 tanks.

The Odometer should still be spot on. I got the GPS, a Veypor VR2, and the stock odometer and they all are within .1 or .2 miles of each other after a whole tank of gas, with the GPS being the one thats lowest.

My speedo has always reported lower mileage than my GPS. I'm getting the re-flash done tomorrow. Strange that they are all over the board???

Checked my odometer today. My 10.3 mile commute is still 10.3 miles.

The ECU controls the speedometer?

I thought the pulses from the hall-effect sensor went directly up to the instruments.

Apparently not as pretty much everyone with a GPS who had the flash done now shows the same speedo error.

AFAIK, vehicle speed is one of the data pieces the computer uses for fueling and spark. Therefore, it'd have to go thru the ECM...

I thought that all the computer "knew" was RPM, throttle opening, oxygen content of exhaust, engine temp, intake air temp?

I haven't checked mine since the reflash. Prior to the flash mine was 6 MPH slow at 80.

I have my Buell Quest GPS back. I can confirm a speedo reading change. Before the reflash the speedo and GPS were pretty much in 100% agreement (as closely as I could tell). Now there is an easy 2 mph difference(might be a little more).
Riding with the speedo on the high side of 65 (needle partially uncovering the dot) the GPS reads 64.

I'll try to remember to check the Uly odometer against the GPS odometer this afternoon.

A GPS' speed calculation will vary depending on how many satellites you are tracking at any given time. You may not want to rely on them for speed.

Best to use a measured mile and a stopwatch for calibration.

I'm aware of potential accuracy problems. I am in an excellent reception area and normally track data from 7 or more satellites.

Still, before the reflash speedo-GPS agreement was as close as I could reasonably observe. Now there is a clear difference.

Odometer accuracy is spot on.

Dakota Digital makes a speedo correction device for late motel Sportsters. It might be interesting to see how it might be retrofitted to a Buell. The catch is the the VSS wire splits off and goes to the ECM and the Speedo. The question is where would be the best place to to tap in. I have the device on my Sporty and it works flawlessly.
