All together now...

Then as I am finishing the install I look down and in my mind I think I dropped to my knees in tears...

The jaw dropper...

A little NAIL hissing back at me.......NOOOOOOO

SOOOO... tire is on order, should be here next week .... 1100 miles was all ... bummer...

Question- I assume the factory top case can't open with the Triple Tail in the up-right position either right???

Plug that tire and run it!

Looks like the top case is closer and lower than the Buell top case. I can open mine about a foot with the rack up. It will take a helmet without folding the rack down.

I can move the top case farther from the tail but up would be much harder to raise it....

safety won out over the plug it solution.... trust me it was a hard decision that ol' george W's brilliant idea made easier to stomach..... even if I put the tax money there myself in the first place.... its like book money in college... but I'm older and wiser and know the real story...

thanks for the advice fellas...

cheers-pete

"It will take a helmet without folding the rack down."

Being the Dunlop 616 I wouldn't feel too bad about replacing it anyways.

REAR

Max- hold 2 helmets also.... so the na na na must be meant for someone else...

Etennuly- i know the majority don't like the D616 but $40 cheaper and like I said 1100 miles on the front too so might as well match 'um up for a little while longer....

I am planning to keep the nail tire and plug it for a back up incase it happens again in the near future.... before I swap down the road for Sync's..

Anyone have a profile shot of stock top case for comparing... the only thing that comes to mind is if the actual lid on the stock top case isn't as tall .... so it would literally sit high and also open farther before hitting the tail....

and GO....

My lid (factory top case) will open partway before hitting the triple tail. If I push, and flex the triple tail, I can get it most of the way open without lowering the triple tail.

Anyone have a method of strategically 'breaking' the 'safety latch' on the triple tail so I don't have to dig out my key every damn time I want to move it? One of these days I'm gonna take that sucker apart...either that, or get a piece of metal made that fits between the grab handles to finish it off, and just put a pad on the lid of the top box for the passenger to lean on.

4_pete_sake,
Your nail is in the bottom of a tire groove and is prime for a plug like quite a few others have suggested. I had just changed my tire last year and shortly there after got a nail in a tire groove. BadWeb'rs said to plug and so I did and have not had a problem with it since. Only about 5 bucks for a gooey type tire plug kit at WalMart and it's good for quite a few future nail holes. I carry the kit in the top case, just in case.

Plugged a brand new Metzler that had only 200 miles on it, ran for 6000 miles until tread was gone, never leaked a drop.

I've up too 4 plugs in separate hole and continued to run those tire so thin you could see the air inside!I'm a firm beliver in plugs the work great be sure too apply the rubber cement to the plug prior to insertion "lick it stick it" I always say

The offender....

N1

Thank you Electroglider 1997, your rationalization of the nail being in-between the actual tread contacting the pavement made me actually plug it....

Thank you Blk uly- your advice of rubber cementing it made me research it some more and realize that you need more than little but not too much.... if not enough the plug is almost impossible to get in and once you get enough it slips right in ....

And thank you to everyone else for the pier pressure... kiddin' sort of....

I suppose I will be check pressure on a daily basis as it is my daily ride... at least for a little while.... getting out of town next weekend... so that will be the test.... bought a tire pump too while I was out getting the plug kit... $5 at Advance Auto.... regularly $10.... so now if it leaks on the road I can at least deal with it then....

crossing my fingers-pete

I picked up a nail in an almost brand new tire while carving up some mountain roads. Limped back down to civilization and got a plug kit, fixed it, and ran the plug until it was time for new tires due to normal wear.

How do you like the GIVI E450? What about the E52 you have pictured as well? Does one work better than the other? Any more pics of the E52 on the Uly? Thanks
