I just got back from the Buell dealer who did my 5K service. The service manager came over and told me my actuator was bad and they had to order the part. This is the second time I've had issues with the actuator on my '07 bike.

What's the deal with these things? I know others have had problems with the actuator. Why does this part have issues? Anybody know?

Wayne,

Mine failed as well - I wired it open just until I could get to the dealer (so I thought) and found that I liked it open all of the time. It's still bad and I haven't been to the dealer yet.

That servo/actuator, IMHO, is just one more thing, along with the BAS, that can go wrong.

There is a simple cycling test (per the SM) that you can perform, to test your actuator's operation. If you want I'll look it up for you.

I have over 12,000 adventurous miles on my 2007 including many miles over 10.000 feet elevation. I do lube the cable as a part of maintenance. No problems with mine.

Dealership here has not seen a rash of failures either.

Hey jammer,

FWIW, when mine failed, it didn't kick on any trouble codes. It just stopped working with the valve in the closed position.

I had one fail (prior to installing the race kit), but mine was self inflicted. When it says "do not turn actuator by hand" they mean it. It was kind of like over winding a clock...SNAP! Since I was too embarrassed to approach the dealer about that one...I just picked up a used one off Ebay for about $10.

Well, the good news is it's covered under warranty, and they found the fault when it was in for service. But, it bothers me I've had issues with it and I know I've seen posts of others having issues. Max, $10 that's a steal! According to the paperwork I got today, it's a $127 part.

When my exhaust actuator failed I simply disassembled it and freed up the gears that were jambed up inside. I ordered another actuator but the old one continued to work.

Davo... I suspect that is what they did last time, simply clean up the actuator and get it working again. This time they opted to replace it.

Just a bit of an update. The actuator has been replaced and the 5K service complete. Not sure which of the two things changed things, but for whatever reason, the power band on the '07 is now much smoother. It's almost like riding a totally different bike. I was smiling before, but now I'm grinning ear to ear when I ride this bike. : )
