Is it more free flowing? Better mpg?
Are there better brands than K & N?
Who's using them and what are the pro's and con's?
Where can one be had for the best price?

I put one in at the 10k service. Noticed nothing different by seat of the pants.
Got mine from American Sport Bike for what ever Al was asking for it.

I went from stock (when new) to a race filter (23,000 miles), to the K&N (last 3,000 miles).

I noticed an improvement when I put the race filter on; smoother in low rpm's and it seemed a little punchier off the line. When I switched to the K&N I did not notice any difference as compared to the race filter.

As far as mpg, I cannot speak to that as I have used a less restrictive filter since almost new.

I put a K&N on at the 7500 mile mark. It seemed to wake my bike right up. I must add that I also put on a Drummer exhaust at about 5000 miles- the two seemed to compliment one another quite well.

Before the mods a friend with a 1800VTX could just barely pull away from me on the top end...now he doesn't even try.

If you are going to ride any dirt get a foam pre-filter.

Where do you get the foam pre-filter?

Treadmarks has a different kind of filter (I think that it is a foam one) from Trojan...I'm pretty sure he had the K&N before that.

So maybe he can chime in.

huh.....whaaa....ohhh

Sorry....was dreaming about my trip to alaska this august.....

I have the pipercross from Matt at Trojan.

I did have several K&Ns on the uly before that.

A brief look at the filters I have had.

Paper is kinda restrictive but okay in a stock box and cover, but once you move to an open air conversion water can cause problems quickly.

K&N def flow well and are less problematic if they get a little wet. If you ride in the rain alot, the water will wash off the oil and require cleaning/reoiling more often. If you ride in rain as heavy as I have with open air, plan on some stumbling when water passes through the gauze of the K&N.

Pipercross seems okay so far. I have not had the first hiccup when driving in torrential rains yet. I have not oiled it, juts removed the wrapper and put it on.

I have a K&N and a drummer that I am waiting to put on because I think I have to remap my ECM, I see that you have the same mods with no
mention of a remap. Is a remap necessary for these two mods?

I would say that it is not necessary...my bike has run great with the stock map.

Keep in mind I live at about 4500 ft and most of my riding is 5000-8000 ft. I dunno how much that might affect things.

That said, a buddy at work lent me his ECMspy cable. I mostly need it to do the 10,000 mile TPS reset, but I may "play" with it a bit.

I would say don't wait- ECM adapts to these changes pretty well. You'll love the extra torque on the bottom.

Roostre says - "I put a K&N on at the 7500 mile mark. It seemed to wake my bike right up."

+1 on that. Did it last week due to a clogged filter from dust storm. Made a huge difference over the old clogged one, and did improve mileage by about 20 miles/tank.

Put one on my car this week. Looks like it added about a gallon/tank. All good!

So an airfilter made it so you can put an extra gallon in the tank? I didn't know filters made tanks grow : )

Im at sea level, I understand that the ECM has a learning curve and will adjust to a certain point. Xbikes run so lean to start with I just don't want to cause any long term damage with making the motor any leaner. Also it was 101 degrees yesterday so the bike runs pretty hot also.

I bought the K&N from American Sport Bike. It filters the air very well. :-)

Now I have the stock 06 air box. But I seem to remember that I could feel just a little bit of different at lower RPMs. I did notice a little induction sound coming from the air box after the installation.

Hotrod54- Yep. Thats why I threw that caveat in. One nice thing about living at altitude is that the factory jetting on a dirt bike set up for sea level and the EPA(read: too lean) is just about spot-on here.
