jUst did Sara's Scg-Sure is louder at idle and lower RPM, but that is what she wanted. She also had complained about how the bike wanted to stall when taking off. I test rode her bike (10-15 minutes at 3,000RPM) and found that it started off very nicely. I also used the split sinker as mentioned above, piece of cake, just clamp on wire where it goes into cable sleeve. Will do the Uly tonight when I get it back from the dealer. Voltage Regulator went out. 11,500 miles.Bummer

Hey Adamd,

IIRC, the race EEPROM doesn't have provisions to operate the muffler servo (race mufflers don't have valves).

If you are running a race EEPROM, or ECM, your servo may not be operating the servo and hence the muffler valve properly.

Just a thought.

John

EDIT:
I guess its a moot point if you wire it open ... but I wanted to mention it to you.

It would be nice if it could be forced open with ECMSpy. If in fact it does bear out to use fuel more sparingly then it would be nice to switch open for economy and back to normal for more low end.

Thanks John, noted. I used EG's sinker mod to wire it open. Sounds way cooler. I also used your sqaure idle vals of 73/68 on a race map. Seems to run pretty well. You can really notice a difference on the pullaways. It may even be TOO rich... I'll play with it. I think I did too many mods tonight to comment but my fan actually turned off while sitting at a light. Never has it done that before. Performace is good.. Feels a lil sluggish maybe due to a Race ECM map and stock air/muffler (minus valve job) .. but seems to run cooler so I may just keep it.

I think I may have to get familiar with the logging tool... I may be addicted to this tinkering...

Hey Adamd,

My final fuel map is 78/76, using Treadmark's Square Idle. That sounds like it may be a little rich, (probably is) but it works for me, and I did try a lot of different combos - even a fatter rear map than a front.

Wiring my valve open and having a Direct Link dyno tune was great until I went up to the peak of Pikes Peak, 14,100feet. I ended up fouling my plugs terribly.

I just returned mine to the cable actuator and it really does change the bike. I found the cable had jammed the actuator arm ( I sure hope it didnt screw it up) but it worked when manually cycled. Although the mid range torque is back it really seems to have run better albeit minus the mid range with the muffler valve open. I have no way to modify the fuel map so that with the stock map. I plan to get the 08 beta patch as soon as my dealer has it. I may try again after that...

FWIW, here's the drill to make sure your actuator is working properly (per 2007 Uly Service Manual)

Interactive Exhaust System

To close the valve in the muffler, cycle the actuator:

A. Hold the throttle wide open.
B. Turn the engine cut-off switch to RUN
C. Turn the ignition/light key switch ON
D. Watch the actuator cycle Close/Open/Close

.

Thanks Johnboy, it is working as it supposed too. I am torn between the two rides, smooth on bottom and rips on top or smooth all the way with no real hits...I want them both!!! My dealer claims he can't update or download the 08 Beta patch without factory authorization..Sounds fishy to me...

Sara is very, very happy with the sound of her Scg once I did open valve trick to it. Did my Uly. Sounds good, but not nearly as good as the Scg with the valve open. I always thought that Sara's Scg sounded much better than the Uly and now it is just a terrific sound. the Uly is smoother on take off but slight hesitation around 2800 rpm.I did not notice a drop in torque mid-range, but perhaps I am not as sensative to that range as most of you folks. Will do a TPS reset this weekend and see if that very minor rough spot smooths out. My new Voltage regulator is churning out between 13.2 and 14.2v. I would say average around 13.9-14.1v. O well I suppose for cross country trips I will need to carry a spare voltage regulator. E-bay here I come.

Hey Jammin,
Thanks for the heads up, I haven't been up that high since I wired the actuator open but it is something to watch for. I've been up Old Stage rd to Victor and I'm on the second tank so I'll pull the plugs after this and check it out.

I too have been watching this thread with some enthusiasm. I took the leap while working through some other issues with the Uly and used the “shot weight" method to pull the valve open.

Current setup is 06 Uly with cut up airbox with a Spec Ops pipe with twin outlets.

When I started the bike up I didn’t notice a difference in sound. After riding it to work today, I did notice it was smoother in the lower rpm’s with a slight hesitation at around 2800-3000rpms. I never got the power drop in the mid range like others described. The one absolute effect I have seen is that my bike no longer “pops” on deceleration. When on the pipe hard then whacking it off throttle the bike used to “pop and clack" like my sporty, now it is just.... well sublime~

Anyway, I am heading out for 800+ mile round trip this afternoon through the weekend. I will report back in when I get back. Btw, it will be two up with bags on from DFW,TX to Ozark, MO. If anyone sees us out on the road pull us over and say Hi!

I have ridden with the valve wired open and with the valve stuck shut. The bike runs better, over all, with it shut.

If it runs smoother at low RPM with the valve open, that is appealing. In my brief experiment, I did not notice that. I think the trade off might be less torque when really pulling a load up a steep hill.

It would be great to hook up a switch to activate the actuator on demand. Thus letting the ECM control it most of the time but being able to let a little sound out when desirable and maybe even smoothing out low rpm operation when needed.

I haven't done this yet because I don't know if supplying voltage to the actuator will feed back to the ECM and possibly fry it. Someone on Badweb has suggested using a diode to protect the ECM and if I knew how to select a diode and wire it in I'd try it.

My seat of the pants test results are the same as Growls, sounds great and runs better on top. Overall I like it better with the valve open, I still dont understand why it feels and sounds better on top with the valve wired open vs actuator opening the valve at full throttle. Shouldnt it be open all the way with both options?

Better than a year ago I wrote how I had taken the cover off to watch the actuator in action while I rode.

On my Uly it would only open that valve under very hard acceleration and as soon as you level out the speed that valve closes. If you just get up to speed in light acceleration that valve never opens. So if you think that valve is open while you are droning at 80 or 90 mph then you are probably wrong.

If you don't believe me than prove it to yourself by riding without the Buell logo'd cover.
I think I heard it explained that torque gets you up to speed fast and hp keeps you there and that kind of would help explain when and why that valve opens and closes.

I'm not either way on this open/close debate but if it's proven to add mpg then I'd like to see some kind of switch to access higher mpg in long haul situations (trip to homecoming).

Yesterday I put it back to normal to see how the swingarm oil temp would react and I'm still checking that out. With the valve disabled it was reading 200 F which seemed a bit higher than normal but the proof is in the pudding.

Makes sense E-Glider...Although it doesnt have the "hit" it feels just as fast either way...proving your theory

Update on open valve. Ran two tanks of gas through it. Mixed commuting, back roads. Most at 60-70 mph.

48 and 49mpg. That is on the low side of what I was getting but too few tanks to tell. It is not as good as 6 of the last 8 I ran with the valve closed.

Heat: Have only noticed heat on my right thing a few times in 8K plus miles but got my bike last fall. Ridden several 90+deg days. With open valve every day I noticed heat under my right thigh right through my Buell/Vanson cordura pants. Variable. It has been 97+ degrees. Our hottest weeks of the year so cannot say it was due to the valve.

Switched back to closed. Definitely more difficult to ride at low RPMs. Cannot go into a tight corner in 2nd and roll on. Bike just doesn't like it. More seat of the pants torque.

Out of action. Wanted to do some more comparison but went to check the oil and noticed spray on my rear hugger. Know nothing about breathers, etc so did some reading and took apart the airbox. Man there was a lot of spooge in there! Rear breather hose connection to the rocker was leaky but still did not seem the source. Most pronounced oil was at left rear of rocker. Seemed to run around the rear of the rocker, drip down the engine, on to the fan, then spray. Thanks to Hexangle's May post it seems this is exactly what he had 3 times...a warped rocker body. Will bring to dealer. I am out of action for now.

Having the valve open resulted in not needing to slip the clutch nearly as often while running in first gear in loose, sometimes deep sand encountered on the fire lanes here. Under most other circumstances though, I like the bike much better with the valve in the stock configuration.

Well it’s July 18th and I just wired my valve open after reading your posts on my Uly 07. Drove the bike for about 20 miles and was impressed on how smooth it ran. I did notice a major drop in torque but for me it's a good thing because I ride in a lot of gravel so I think I can handle the low speed throttle better.

How many of you guys still have it opened?
Does it increase oil temperature?
Did anyone have any maintenance issues with this mod?
When adding an aftermarket exhaust on the Buell, is the valve deactivated for the mod anyway?
