Been thinking about this lately...

The thought is no doubt triggered by a late night flat tire in the middle of nowhere two weeks ago. I didn't need any means of defense, thankfully, but I felt pretty vulnerable.

How many of you either "carry" (legally, of course), or have some other means of potential defense (knife, mace, etc)?

Any strong feelings either pro or con?

Thanks in advance,
DB

Can't shoot someone if you aren't carrying, so why put yourself in a situation that could escalate to deadly force only because you have a gun at hand. I like guns but only for target practice and can plinking. People pull triggers on others and wish they hadn't.

I pack the heat. Just as with riding a motorcycle, you have to use caution. Almost 99% of the time no one even knows I have it, which keeps people from being uneasy. Never take it out just to 'show off'. It is ONLY for target shooting and personal defense. My dad always told me to never pull it out unless I intend to fire it, and I think that is a pretty good rule of thumb. I never keep a round in the chamber either.

Personally, it's a constitutional right (maybe for not too much longer if things keep going the way they are). I don't go around acting like a cowboy and don't show it off to make people think I'm cool or a badass. But if I ever broke down and something occurred where my life was threatened or in danger, you better believe I'll be glad I had it.

Glock 26 here - just on trips though. Stock except for a Storm Lake barrel.

I have no strong opinion, though, either way. Yea or nay - whatever works for you, is what you should do.

What I do feel strongly about, however, is an individuals freedom or right to choose. We all need/should have the right to choose what's best for us.

my 2 cents.

My first course of action is run away.

As fast as possible, until the threat no longer exist.

My final course of action, if there is absolutely positively no other way out, is to put my back to the wall and survive.

No mater how many reloads it takes.

Before this thread explodes into a gun control debate...Yes, I regularly carry a .45 when traveling on the Uly. Just like it's in the Jeep when I take the family on road trips. I'm licensed for concealed carry, and I am a Marine CQB (Close Quarters Combat) instructor. If you decide to carry, get the proper training, and follow the law.

As far as strong feelings, after my second tour in Iraq I was selected for a degree completion program, and chose to attend Virginia Tech hoping to relax and start a family. I assume I need not go too much into detail concerning the events of April 16th, but I was in the adjacent building when the event took place. As it's illegal to carry on campuses, I was unarmed. Long story short, my plans of unwinding in quiet rural Virginia after returning from Ramadi, Iraq did not pan out quite like I had expected, and I lost (another) friend that day. I will neither debate what I could have or could not have done that day nor am I endorsing any movement to legalize carry on college campuses...it's just a tough pill to swallow. You asked.

Good eye Johnboy.

Springfield Ultras, in .45, decked out with wilson goodies.

But sometimes, I can only carry one .45.

Do you recommend synthetic gun cleaners and lubes? Or do you use dino like Hoppes?

Got some of that Rusted Duck cleaner and it is too strong for the finishes, and I don't care for the spray can lube.

Would all those against concealed carry Please carry a sign to that effect?
That way the thugs wanting to rob the unarmed won't be concerned about getting shot and I won't feel that I've added any security to the "anti's" by providing them with unnecessary caution on the part of the goblins and thugs.

Perhaps a sign on their front doors declaring their home to be gun free and warning the bad guys that they will call 911 if they have time.

Of course I'm just kidding........................................... ..

Here are a couple weapons I like to carry on my Uly.

OK, maybe I don't take them with me on the Uly, but these are pictures of me from this week! I got to fire some pretty cool weapons as a side perk for providing a little Blackhawk support during a Seal training exercise.

Treadmarks...that is just sweeet. I love my 1911's though mine are milspec Springfields. I usually have either a Taurus ultralite 2" 22 magnum or...a Ruger Alaskan .44 mag.
Jrockne-I totally see it the same way.

ps-have never had a human-shooting experience and hope I never have to, but I have finished off several roadside deer thrashing about with broken legs and such. Much more common use around here!

Steve,

You need a real job! Were you aiming that rocket at something or was it a target round that runs out?

That would look so cool mounted on the Uly! Probably get you booted from most small towns and large cities though!

Max, you can't post stuff like that.

Now Tread is going to mod something-or-other, and turn it into his own rocket launcher.

Vern, that was the real deal Soviet made RPG and live round! We had a bunch of old tank shells 500-800 meters away to aim at, but I'll tell you what...a person would have to be pretty lucky to hit a moving target with one of these (or unlucky if you are the moving target).

This brings a whole new meaning to when Ft_bstrd says "back blast area clear!"

Looks like your ATF form 4473 is still in the mag pouch.

That would be my permit : ) Just haven't been able to get it laminated yet so it's just folded up in there. Yours is very nice as well. I think with that holster you can get an attachment that holds an extra mag or two, but then again...that could be overkill

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Shoot first, ask questions later.

I subscribe to the G. Gordon Liddy theory.

If you are going to shoot someone, make sure you kill them. Dead men don't show up in court. LOL! : )

Hmmm, is anyone not packing heat?? So far, it looks like there's approximately a 90% chance that every Uly you see on the road is armed to the teeth. Maybe we could get 08uly to add this statistic to the spreadsheet.

Glock 27. Hopefully I'll never need it. But... It's better to have and not need than to need and not have.
