On a resent thread someone asked what was the coldest day anyones ever ridden .

My question is , on those 12 degree days does the fan still come on ?

Low 20's here - the fan came on lots of times in traffic, not so much on the freeway

In the single digits the fan still comes on, although maybe not as much as it does on a warmer day.

Sorry this is a little off but since you've gotten a couple of answers-

I was riding my jap sportbike today and in a lot of traffic.

In one extended sit on south beach I actually had to look down and see the fan running to be sure it was on.

Funny how you get used to things, like the fan on the uly.

Now I get nervous on my other bike because I don't here the fan. Plus it has that annoying temp gauge that I glance at even though all is okay.

I kind of like just trusting that the uly is okay because the idiot light hasn't come on and the fan is running.

I get a big smile on my face whenever I'm riding and the fan actually shuts off, especially on cold days.

I was on a BMW K1200GT riding up to the Loveland Pass in the Colorado Rockies in very heavy, very slow traffic last September. That bike has a near-silent fan, which I was instantly jealous of, but at the same time my temperature guage was skirting the red zone. Cars and trucks were overheating and pulling over, and I thought I was going to be one of them until I finally made it through the mountain tunnel and emerged on the other side in a full rain/hail storm. Overheating problem solved. The fan on that bike does not appear to be set up as it is on the Buell - the cool the actual cylinder head.

I ride an 08 X ... my fan NEVER comes on, except when I shut the bike down. I've been surprised at this given the rather extensive talk about fans on Uly-related boards. It has been in the '90s (F) here and even then it hasn't come on while I've been out. The riding consisted of country roads and almost no traffic lights. This morning on my commute, which included superslab, and a significant amount of stop-and-go, there was no fan, though it was a bit cooler (mid 70s).

I'm actually starting to get a bit concerned that something may be wrong. What do other '08 owners have to report?

The frame gets pretty toasty. The only mod that I have done is Odie's two piece heat blanket and the hard cases.

Wow...with regard to the previous two posts; I also have an '08 X.

Yesterday, prior to my roll in the mud, my fan was running virtually nonstop. The temp was in the nineties and we were averaging 40-50 MPH, with sporadic stops for traffic, etc. Honestly, without exaggeration, I'd say the fan was operating 95% of the time.

It was starting to get pretty annoying as I wondered if the fan would ever NOT run.

I know $250 is a bunch of cash for a piece of plastic, but I might make a move on the RSS.

I've posted this in other threads before, and now someone agrees with me! My fan, 08 Uly, has never once come on while the bike was running. It always comes on when I switch off the ignition, either with the run switch of the key! I've run a 14 hour day, with temps in the 90s and low 100s, and never once had the fan come on. Maybe that's why I complain about the heat? Does anyone know when is the fan "supposed" to come on? Is there a test to see if the fan is functioning correctly?

08's are different then previous Ulys with the changes they have. I believe it is all dependent on the temp sensor and with the changes the 08's have it may keep the temps down better while running.

I have the 08, no RSS, and the fan does not run when I am riding around. That said, I very rarely drive stop and go.

California,

The 06 Uly had a fan on/ engine on temp of 428F. I am not sure if the 08 Uly is different.
If I remember correctly these are the other 06 parameters:
fan off engine on at 356
fan on engine off 338F
fan off engine off 302F

When I got my XT back in April, I noticed that the fan rarely came on when I was riding but seem to run a lot longer (~10 minutes) after shutting down. Now that the temps are hitting the 90+ degree mark, I'm noticing the fan coming on more often while riding. However, it definitely starts up later than it did in the same conditions with my '04 and '06 XBs. It's also considerably quieter - although that may just be the result of the Uly's bigger seat masking some of the noise.
