A couple of weeks ago, I rode Groucho down to Grenada Ms for a traditional archery tournament. Bad weather was headed our way so I left Thursday in hope of beating the storms Tornado Ted (weather bozo on Kolr 10 in Springfield Mo) said were coming. Anyway, Friday nite at 10:30 the most god awful lighting and thunderstorm I've ever seen came to town. I was camped at Hugh White State Park in my tent and had turned the bike so it was not sideways to the wind and in a fit of bad judgement had taken my clothes out of tent and back into sidebags lest the tent leak. Tent didn't leak, but the d&*%ed hard bags did. Has anybody had this problem and is there a known fix for it? How bad was the storm? It lasted from 10:30 pm till 1:30 am. I could hear the tornado sirens in town for over an hour. I don't think there actually any tornado's right there, but it's the system that killed so many people in Mo and Ar. ps: bike was fine and I HIGHLY recommend Sierra Designs}} tents. Dennis}} |

I have had a Sierra Designs tent for 15 years. It looks and works like new. Best money I have spent. I am less than thrilled about my bags as well. Mine leak and the top latch sucks. The only good thing I can say about them is that they are big. Every time I strap them on and fill them, I wonder when the latch is going to break and whether I have enough duct tape to keep them closed. |

Some leak, some don't, mine do but at the bottoms. My seals as new weren't fully seated and popped out often when I opened the cases. I was going to glue them in when I discovered they had to be pushed home into the channels. If yours are loose then just start anywhere and press firmly with your thumbs and you should feel them snap into the channel, then work your way around. Once I did that it actually takes a good pull to pop the seal out. The seals aren't formed and don't fit well around the bends, that's where the water gets in mine. |

Mine seem to be more weather proof while moving...the bike just doesn't like to sit still. |

As a belt and suspenders kind of guy, 13 gallon plastic trash bags have become a must-have accessory when carrying items in the stock luggage that I want to stay dry. Doubles as a dirty clothes bag as the trip progresses. I also bungee the luggage to the side of the bike. Lost a stock BMW bag once on some backroad and never knew it. |

Next time you buy any bedding - blankets, mattress pads, etc., don't throw out the plastic/vinyl bag. Those make great waterproof inner-cases - and you can't beat the price. (Message edited by Towjam on May 22, 2008) |

My looney bin is fine benny lava The Caribous are nice, put a bag liner in them and the stuff stays as dry as if I had left it at home on the counter. Nice thick durable rubber grommet liner on the bags and a damn rugged seal. worth the look. pic on profile |

I went with the Caribous also and like them. Really would have liked some top entry cases better, but the Pelicans are indestructable for the most part. I just bought a Pelican 1600 and am going to try and fab up some sort of support for a top case and weld it to the Caribou mounts for the side cases. Not sure how this is going to turn out, but I really want a top case. I also bought the hardware from Caribou to put the same cases on my DR650. Works out great for me. |

Mine haven't leaked yet, I always roll my stuff in those vacuum luggage bags you can get a Walfart. You can also fit more stuff as well. My girlfriend likes that part.... |

I broke a latch last weekend. I've been super careful having heard many horror stories, and I was pushing the bag closed with my legs - at least I thought I was. Apparently I didn't have it all the way shut. What a PITA. I'm still in the warranty period, but that does nothing to alleviate the annoyance, only the cost. |

Idiot me, ordering the bags from the states. x your fingers that mine don't brake cause I only have a 90 day warranty. So far for saving 100 bucks instead of 2 years European warranty |

Hm. No problems with mine so far, and I've hit just about any kind of rain this side of a hailstorm with 'em. |

One of mine leaked on the roads around MBV. I screwed up and left the edge of the garbage bag, that I use to keep things dry, sticking out of the top seal. Damn thing worked like a funnel filling the garbage bag wetting my clothes. Other than that I had a bottle of window cleaner leak in one, but no external leaks. |

I lost my top case on the way home from work on Monday. I use it every day, it hadn't been off the bike since last August. Never overloaded, no warning signs, just gone when I got home. Andy is getting me a replacement, which I will be bolting on. I suspect the latch wore or broke. I just replaced the rear tire on Sunday and gave everything a look over. It's a pisser. Be warned. |

I broke two latches in Warranty period. Fortunately they are very easy to replace. But they don't leak. |

Well, thanks for the garbage bag tip. Should have known better, I guess. I'm serious about the Sierra Designs tent. Paid $200 for a "two" person tent. Really a one old fart will fit comfortably tent, but it is great. |

i love the bags. sometimes i use them to go grocery shopping. also had a leak problem but it was fixed by seating and sealing the gasket. wish i could open and close latch w/o using the key. i think the latches are backward....they should automatically lock to the bike, but provide access w/o a key, and lock when you want to. |
