Ok so I was doing some plumbing over the weekend and bought a tube of silicone to put around one of my fittings (I am not a quality plumber) and well out of the 5 dollar tube of silicone I used about 50 cents worth. So I have been kicking this tube of silicone around for a few days not wanting to throw it away until last night when I was installing my Polly heaters I had this revelation, why not pump the silicone throughout the handlebars to sort if act as a damper. Well I rode the bike to work this morning and its a WORLD of difference. I can see out of my mirrors now! If I lug the engine the mirrors are still useless but it seems to work great for normal driving. There seems to be a lot less vibration in my hands as well. Anyone else try anything like this? It seems to be a pretty cheap alternative to the bar snake. Obviously if/when my polly heaters fail it wont be too easy to repair but it all works for now! | ||

Thanks for the tip. I bought a bag of lead shot and filled my handlebar a year ago and it did nothing other than add weight to the bars and leave me with most of a bag of shot. I believe that I shall give the silicone filled handlebars a go. | ||

My wife's 07' XL1200R has very clear mirrors throughout the rpm range and the vibration in the handlebars seems harsher to me. Maybe it's the 1" handlebars or the solid stalks on the mirrors, or just the shorter mirror stalks. Whatever the reason the mirrors are perfectly clear and buzz-free all the time. | ||

EG- some people mix the lead shot with the silicone and claim that's the ultimate fix. I don't think the lead shot helps unless it is REALLY packed tightly which may be hard to do. | ||

I filled the whole handlebar on my Kawasaki klx250s with silicone. From one end all the way to the other-and it really helped. That bike is counterbalanced but I keep it at 6-8000 on the open road so there is still a buzz (not any more!) Haven't done it to the Uly yet but I'm going to. I just added the 17 oz bar end weights from HVMP-awesome product too. That helped a lot also! doc |
