Up here in Central Maine I have been encountering a massive amount of bugs while *trying* to enjoy riding my new mo-chine. The last 200 mile trip I went on I literally had to stop every 30 miles or so to rake insect remains from my helmet visor so I could see where I was going. Thank God for whoever came up with those premoistened Windex wipes! I don't go anywhere without them... I really hate the look of the tall screen but I may have to pick one up to throw on for longer rides. Is it just Maine? | ||

You are not alone bug meister. Here in cheese and chocolate land its a 'May Bug' season. Flying beetles about the size of half a mans thumb and well armored. Had one catch me in the shoulder whilst doing 140 KMH..... I thought i had been shot despite having a heavy bike jacket on.  | ||

Is it just Maine? I'm in Ohio and get 'em here too. I went through a cloud tonight. FWIW, I have the tall screen and it does not stop bugs on the visor. (I'm 6'2") | ||

I like a good meal, but after being traumatized by these critters as a kid and having them swarm me as I attempted to mow the yard....I hate them! I prefer to torture them to death for revenge. | ||

Not quite time for them yet, but hitting fireflies make for interesting times on those warm summer evenings. Hawaii had "pineapple bugs". I think they were actually some sort of palmento beetle. Big and plentiful, with a sweet flavor. | ||

Don't get me started on Texas bugs. Everything's bigger in Texas, and they fly in swarms so huge they blot out the sun...filling stations don't have water buckets with windshield squeegees, they have firehoses and angle grinders with coarse wheels to take off the guts. rt  | ||

Try Florida and South Georgia for frikken "Love Bugs". So called because of the position they are always in during the season. Every one you hit is two. They come in hoards that cover miles and miles. I have had to stop at a car wash to de bug my riding gear and bike. They are very acidic, blend them up and they make a good paint stripper, put them on something and let them dry they make an excellent glue. Don't ever let them dry on anything for a couple of days.....oh....and they taste terrible. | ||

Driven, I checked your profile and see your in Hampden. I used to live in the BIG town of Abbot, just south of Moosehead.I remember having to use an ice scraper to get the bugs off the windshield of the cage. You would lose a quart of blood washing the car! I don't miss black flies at all. | ||

You would lose a quart of blood washing the car! I don't miss black flies at all. Yep, there's about 2 weeks out of 52 that are actually enjoyable here. The rest is ruined by bugs, freezing temps, etc. Thankfully I have my sled for the winter months. FYI, I go to Guilford every Wednesday (right next to Abbott). |
