My 06 Uly has started coughing through the airbox, backfiring, and dieing. I just had it serviced about three weeks ago, and this started about two weeks ago with an airbox sneeze. In 3.5k to 4k RPM, it seems like like pressure builds up, the rpm's drop (the needle will sometimes flutter up or down about .5k), and POW, back fire, and sometimes dies completely. Is this a simple TPS reset, or worse?

ported air box (put in two services ago), but otherwise stock 06 with 15k miles.

Sounds like fouled plugs. Only cure is changing them for new ones. Did the shop run it cold without warming it up?

Join the club. Mine is a similar vintage to yours and does the same thing now and again. Im used to its strange antics every so often and Im happy to live with them, I like to think of them as part of the character of the bike.

I would pull and replace the plugs first. If they have been fouled at all do not re-use them.

Check your plug wires for damage where the front one can lay across the idle adjuster cable. Make sure the plug wire boots didn't get pulled loose from the coils.

I never warm mine up before I ride and it's not been a problem on my 06'. I'd reset the TPS.

I wouldn't change a thing. Those 05 Ulys will be worth a lot someday because they didn't build many 05s. Hahahha.

Seriously it's not the plugs. Changing them may make the problem go away temporarily but the real problem is probably your wires. If you can get the wires off the plugs and coils take a look and you will see they have been chaffed. Your spark is jumping through there and that is causing your miss fire/back firing problem. Putting new plugs in will lower the voltage required to jump the gap in the plugs causing the problem to go away but it will only correct the issue for a short period of time. The voltage will climb up again and when it does the same thing will happen. I may be wrong because I can't see your bike but I would bet it is the wires. It would be a lot worse in the rain when the wires get wet.

+1 on verifying a good TPS reset. I couldn't ride mine three feet after a botched reset (my fault for rushing the tech to get it done before closing time, forgot to set the AFV).

I think the key word in his discription is "My Uly started to" so it was running fine before and this just developed. My TPS has been adjusted once at the 1000km service. Runs perfect since thats 25000kms ago.

Sounds like the wires to me. And easy enough for a layman to check out. Doesn't cost a cent to check.

Front lead had a hole in the insulation (already wrapped in electrical tape).

Thanks Bosh.

By the way Magnacor sells a really nice replacement wire set for $20 plus shipping and they are fast.

I'll get a chance to check the new plug wires this weekend. I replaced the 'holy' one last night, and as soon as my head stops hurting, I'll go see if the popping & sneazing has gone away.

I also ran the diagnostic, and I'm coming back with a 2-1, which might explain the surging at ~3500 rpm? How easy is the servo to replace/fix if I wanted to do it myself?

i had this exact same problem. to the T. i believe i had a bad spark plug wire.

but i think i messed up the spark plug wire myself trying a roadside fix. i believe that the real problem was a wire had been worn through and shorted, near my ecm, under the seat.

good luck!

Diagnosis - Leaky gasket.

Replacing the damaged plug wire obviously helped, but eventually sneeze, cough, croak!

I happened to be near CowboyHD when she gave out, and have heard they have a really good Buell tech. So far - I have to agree. This was a totally different experience than what I've had with the other guys. He ripped the timing plate off in the parking lot, determined that timing was probably not the culprit, looked stumped, then gave it some gas, looked at me and said, 'i bet you have a leaky gasket - see how slow the idle is slow to reset?' He sprayed something (zef?) onto the top of the heads & you could hear the idle jump all over the place. "Yep, sounds like you have a blown gasket." Something tells me I should have been going there the entire 15,000 miles I've owned my uly. I could kick myself.

Tomorrow she goes under the knife - wish us luck.

Sounds like an intake gasket. Convoluted path to the part, but not major surgery.

Glad you found it!

Replaced intake gasket, and some other suspect parts, went to pick the bike up, drive it home...

and guess what... after the motor gets hot: sneeze, cough, backfire, totally dead, stranded on the side of the road. The dealer that worked on it came to pick it up, and it's back in the shop for another week with no word. No issues with the 'new' dealer - they have been awesome (compared to the other guys).

I'll be following up tomorrow... Here's where I am: TPS reset, new spark plug wires/ new plugs, new intake gasket, and no go.

I'm still guessing electrical problem... Any ideas now?

Can you post what you found out in the end? My '07 Uly is doing the exact same thing, and is driving me crazy. I am suspecting the ecm or some intermittent wiring problem.
