How I got it today is a somewhat interesting story. When I have a moment I'll tell you! Oh yeah, the most important part...it's Black...

The only excuse you could have for not posting details is because you're out riding the sh*t out of it.

congrats!!!

It is an interesting story, and I'm glad I could be a part of it...but all good things in good time, right?

"Quick...make up something interesting!"}

In this case the facts should suffice...}

"The only excuse you could have for not posting details is because you're out riding the sh*t out of it."

Sadly that is not the case, but here's the story..

Saturday I had signed up for Lee Park's Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic which was held at Frederick Community College in Frederick Maryland. I geared up and headed off for the 90 mile ride from my house at 5:45AM for the 8:00 start of class. I had gotten about 10 miles into my ride and the skies opened up and I rode the next 80 miles to Frederick in the rain. I got there with plenty of time to spare, shed my wet gear (which kept me dry), signed in and sat down for the orientation session. Throughout the morning we discussed trail braking, turning points, sight lines, body position etc. interspersed with sessions out in the wet parking lot (it was still raining) which included dragging pegs in said wet parking lot while riding around 40' circles made of cones. Great fun! So, up to this point my day was going great. Now please allow me to digress.

The background for this tale. Several weeks ago I had taken a ride to Frederick Buell/HD to check out the new XT that Ratbuell had posted about on this forum. I posted about the experience on the forum if you are interested in looking it up, but suffice it to say I was impressed with the bike, the dealership and the salesman. I had pretty much decided at that time that the XT would be my next bike purchase, and my tentative schedule for that purchase was out December 08 to January 09.

The bike I was riding for the class was my 1989 Honda PC800 Pacific Coast. I was riding this thing like Fast Freddie. (In my mind anyway...) Outside leg hooked over the seat, outside elbow resting on knee, inside knee hanging out, shoulders turned to inside of turn, sight turning point, swivel head to look through to exit of turn, flop into turn and away we go. It was great...until I glanced at my volt meter which was slowly falling through 10 volts. Crap! The third stator/regulator set to go bad on this bike in 4 years. I pull into line after my turn at the exercise and the voltage continues to drop until the bike just dies. This is about 3:45 PM

After clearing it with my boss (she who must be consulted) I get on the cell and call Ratbuell, I introduced myself as the guy who had test rode the red XT a few weeks back. Silence..."we don't have a red XT" he tells me..."This is Frederick Buell isn't it?" I mutter..."Yes it is", he replies, "but we don't have a red XT. I have one due in in about 2 weeks. I do have a black XT on the floor"...I start to laugh. "Oh, that's right. I have a picture of the red XT from the Buell website as my Desktop Background and I have been staring at it every day for about 8 weeks." Crap, do I ever feel like an idiot.

"Joe," says I, "do you have time to sell me that XT today?"
"Sure," He replies.
"Send a flatbed to the Community College, tow my bike in and store it a few days until I can pick it up and you have a deal." I replied
And that's how it went down.

Sadly, I had to leave home this morning at 5:00AM and drive to Connecticut for my father-in-law's burial. He passed this winter and up here in New England they close many of the cemeteries when the ground is frozen so the burial was scheduled for this Monday. Otherwise I'd be putting the miles to her. I did get a good 90 mile introduction last night though.

Frederick Buell did a dyno run on her before I took delivery yesterday and she peaked at 92 RWHP, I don't have the dyno graph with me so I can't relate any other particulars. I know the headlights of the cars behind me on US1 red shifted when I rolled on the throttle...I got home just before 9:00PM and my wife suited up and we went for a short ride together. She pronounced it good, so all is well.

Great physics reference there.

Congrats on the Uly purchase!

Congrats Rwven. Good luck and happy trails with that new XT. Forget all that flashy color crap......Stealth Black is the best color for making safe get away.

Congratulations Ron! You are correct, black is not only more stealthy it's also the fastest color.

Rwven,

Nice pick up. I rode that same bike 2 weeks ago! I'm trying to decide between the XT and X and am on the fence. It is driving me crazy and Joe crazy I'm sure.

I guess if I want an XT I'm going to have to wait now!!!

Congrats!

Congrats on the new XT...

Is the engine broken-in? Is it wise to bring the engine even close to red line (i.e. a dyno run) before it's broken in?

Just wondering

That's how you seat the rings. Ride it like you stole it!

No stranger to hard break-in...

That's how I do it, but... only to within 75% to 80% of redline for the initial loadings. : )

The bike did already have over 120 miles on it, Ratbuell rode it for awhile and a few folks demoed it, so it wasn't a totally fresh motor.

I think I read somewhere on this forum that they routinely dyno new bikes coming off the assembly line. The last couple of new bikes I've had I took up to red line a couple of times right before I took them in for the initial service just to get them used to the idea.

GS1100gk,

I lowered my 06 Uly and can't imagine why anyone would go for the X. There is no fence. It's the XT by a mile. The only caveat is if you don't need the luggage, you can lower the X for a lot less that the luggage's cost.

Gotj,

Actually, I'm a luggage type of guy. Meaning, I ride as often as I can, and carry things like rain gear, extra clothes, gloves, work back pack, etc and need a place to carry things.

I rode both bikes and liked them both. I know the suspension is taller on the X and I'm thinking some of the handling differences can be attributed to the tire selection between them. Ratbuell has an X in blue that I can pick up and he would order the luggage for me.

I asked Ratbuell if he had an XT coming in soon and he said one is not due for 6 weeks (Ugh!) and is trying to get me one from another dealer.

RW - GS can't hate you. He and I have been dancing around these bikes for what, six or eight months now? Some of the 120 miles were his...he's certainly had his shot at any of the bikes I had in stock.

RW, Ratbuell is correct. I've been slow to pull the trigger on a new Ulysses. Totally my fault. Ratbuell has been a very patient salesperson and I appreciate that. Actually Ratbuell, I first had an interest in the Uly 2 years ago but it was way too high for me to sit on!

Maybe I can find some ankle cuffs for you? They'll be cheaper than a new bike... Sleep hanging from your feet, maybe more of the bikes will be in your reach (no pun intended) : )

Of course, my lanky butt can make jokes like that. LOL.
