Late next week I'm headed from WV to Tampa, with the company truck and a bunch of gear. Anyone headed out to the Myrtle Beach event? Wondering if it'd be worth the detour...

I've had customers who swear they'll never go back to a Myrtle bike week...and others who won't miss it for the world. Me, I did Daytona once and that was plenty.

Do you like crowds, and "biker folk"...or do you just like to ride your bike and don't care what others do or don't think about you and your ride?

If you've never been, it's worth the spectacle...but like I said, I did one bike week and that was more than enough for me.

It is more curiosity than anything (having not been) ...I fall into the latter category but am curious about 'neat' ideas that others have implemented....my interest is mostly in interesting mechanical bits, the people that came in on them...maybe less so. Gee that is a scary profile eh? I'm really a people person Joe...really

BTW I just piked up my newfangled sidestand and some bits from the dealer today ....not sure when I'll have the time to install it...wish me luck!

I subscribe to this one, I can do without the BS, Strutting, chest puffing and fancy dress parties that goes with large gatherings. As far as I am concerned its me, my Uly and the open road..... oh unless its another Buell rider of course

I rode to Laconia bike week last year for the first and last time (on my Bandit 1200). I was wearing Rev'It pants, an armored jacket and a full-face helmet.

I am in no way exaggerating when I say I was I was the ONLY rider who wasn't wearing jeans (or shorts), one of MAYBE 10 riders (out of THOUSANDS) who was wearing a helmet and pretty much the only one with a jacket. Most had either a T-shirt or a wife beater.

I used to ride a Sportser and I admit, my "uniform" of choice at the time was jeans and a T-shirt. I was younger then and vanity prevailed over common sense. But bike-week was such a joke, I couldn't find any enjoyment in it whatsoever. It's essentially "trailer and T-shirt week." The entire event centers around the multitude of vendors selling either bike-week T-shirts, crappy leather or products completely unrelated to motorcycling.

I couldn't wait to get back on the road. I spent the next five nights camping around New England and had a blast.

Thanks for the advise guys... I got into riding as a solo activity myself ...it is odd, I suspect the puzzled looks I get from the T-shirt, bandanna crowd at the gas pumps is about the same look of incredulity I give them! ATGATT gets harder as it heats up but after my off-bike excursion a dozen years ago (with some gear but not quite all...) I'm a believer. Hmmm ... I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Memphis a few years back and the International BBQ championships are... (not good for the diet!)

Hey Vern, watcha doin?

Hi Ken. I'm giving some insight into the bike week thing.

I have done Daytona bike week, Panama City Thunder Beach, Honda Hoot, and some smaller venues. I totally agree with Rat, Dick, and Tipsy. Ya need to go to one for the sake of the spectacle.

If you don't have any chrome or leather to sell, Idling on parade laps through town gets old fast. I'm not into the Harley "image" thing, I have a bike to "ride".

At one of the events, just for the heck of it, I went from vendor to vendor looking for a new armored jacket and full face helmet. More than once I was told "This is Florida, you don't need that stuff here!"

Rallys can be fun. You may not have much in common with many of the folks that attend but you can bet you'll see and meet others that have much in common with you. Just because some look down on Harley riders doesn't mean that you have to. I own and ride a couple of Harleys, a ULY, and a Yamaha. Not everyone rides a Buell and that doesn't mean they have it wrong, it just means they have it different. I personally don't subscribe to the thought that my way of looking at this world is the only way to look at it (maybe the best way, but certainly not the only way).

This is a great forum .. in case I hadn't mentioned it.

.I personally don't subscribe to the thought that my way of looking at this world is the only way to look at it (maybe the best way, but certainly not the only way)

quite well put! I'll second that thought...

For me, it is about the ride and the wonderful mechanical contraption we ride ...
The Uly is my first American bike and I'm quite proud of its engineering, and more importantly the successful translation from design to implementation. I recall being quite disappointed in a Chevy from my college days...there were so many good ideas but by the time it reached manufacturing, the implementation pretty much crummied up the car.

Admittedly I'd shied away from the chrome brigade (domestic or import) as a matter of taste so while I may proclaim "'tis about the ride" the outward appearance sorta matters too. This past weekend I saw bandannas on Harleys, flip-flops on R6s and t-shirts everywhere. Can't generalize...as it has been said before "to each his(her) own". Sadly though, while I might walk up to the dude on his sportbike or KLR or GS to compliment him on his bike....I still haven't done it with the Harley guys....more room for my own personal growth....and squashing those prejudices.
