While sitting at a light today a father in a mini van asked me about my gas mileage. I told him I get in the 40's, roughly. He than asked "thats a scooter right?".... The light had just turned green and sad to say I couldnt think of a response fast enough.

No, pity the small-minded and unhappy fool. Think about what’s wrong with that picture. He was wishing he was you – and had to throw out an insult in a retarded attempt to win an argument with himself – an attempt to save face.

Well, it could have been an honest question. Some people know nothing about two wheeled vehicles and having seen the Bergman out there maybe he was confused. For the sake of serenity I would chalk it up to ignorance.

Let the confused stay in the mini van. Probably would be just another motorcycle statistic to be used against us.

At present I ride a Honda PC800 Pacific Coast, I have little sympathy for you having to endure a "scooter" comment....

Dave I hope you mean the minivan part!

I was at the local suzuki dealer one time and a guy walks up to me on the firebolt, he says is that thing(the bike inside he was looking at) a motorcycle or a scooter?? I told him it was a scooter and he said, well it is 650cc...and the salesman said it was a motorcycle. That was when I told him it dont matter the engine size, it sits and rides like a scooter, so it is a scooter and I am pretty sure it broke his heart.

Mini vans are fantastic family vehicles! We have one. The seats fold into the floor, tons of storage, good mileage, electric doors, hauls a bike trailer, can sleep in it; it's a small hauling joy! Go ahead and laugh.

XB's do look like little scooters, the Uly's a tall one though. Who cares what other's think anyway.

At times likes that, I like to raise my fist and yell: "Death to Infidels!"

But that's just me.

I've never gotten the "scooter" comment about my bike.

I can see how the uninitiated might confuse an R or S with a scooter.

Compared to other bikes, Buells are very compact. The only point of reference for most folks with regard to bikes vs. scooters is size.

I'm sure it wasn't a slam. I believe he was genuinely interested. If he got the name, it's just a matter of time before he finds out the difference.

Look at it this way, he may be able to convince his wife that it IS a scooter. : D

We are buying our first mini-van. We've always been sport ute people.

Simply doesn't make sense at $5-6/gallon.

Hey! I drive a Honda Odyssey mini-van when I'm not riding a motorcycle. We have no kids so we did not by the DVD/Nav system but it is equipped and drives like a luxury car. I towed the Buell to the track last Monday and used the Honda as a portable dressing room for taking the leathers on and off. It carried all of the other track necessities and still got over 20 MPG. It seems silly calling it a mini-van though. The darn thing weighs 4600 pounds.

The minivan scene at 32 seconds is a piece of marketing brilliance.

Maybe he thinks to get into 40's mpg it must be a scooter. If so re'd really be upset to find out scooters get around 100mpg.

Now I have to admit to having a "mini-van."

No rugrats either, It has done duty as a micro RV, I can lock my mountain bike in it and go have a meal after a ride.
It's basically a covered pick up with a cargo height limitation.

I don't really like to drive anyway and I hoped the thing would slow me down but it basically drives like a car.

Definitely not cool in the traditional sense but it is useful.

I honestly can't remember when I last drove the thing though.

Fatty B....there is no escaping the lure of the "mommy van". : )

Just don't plan on towing with it. I logged 14mpg with my wife's Honda Odyessy pulling the same load my diesel Jeep gets 24mpg with.

You remember when we filled up coming back from Barber. I just refilled my tank YESTERDAY. Even towing on part of the tank, I pulled down 22mpg and that is 90% stop and go driving back and forth to work every day. Highway milege, not towing, will be near 30mpg.

I think it the mpg thing thats throwing them.

I always get asked about mpg on my scooter. When I tell them it can get 100+ miles per gallon and I regularly get up to 80mph. They look like they have seen a ghost.

I get more of the "What is that? A dirt bike or somethin'?", which I appreciate. One drunk dude at my local pub saw it, asked if it was some sort of motorcross thing, and told me that I could never take that thing off the pavement with those tires (D616s). He was an old motorcross guy. There was no arguing with him.

I know bikers who refer to their bikes as scooters. He was, maybe trying to look like he knew something.

I love my Uly but I also love scooters. I just might have to get one someday.

Anyone in a minivan has to be jealous of anyone on a scooter. Unless, of course, you're in the back of the "Free Candy" van with one of Ft-bstrd's prospects.

Sorry to the mini van owners. It wasnt a dig at the van just painting a picture. Im sure one day I will be a proud mini van owner. Maybe insulted was the wrong word. i actually felt worse for my Ully that it was called a scooter. You know the whole ghost in the machine theory.

Jlnance,

That video made me think of something that happened down in WV last weekend. I was riding along the top of a mountain ridge (gravel road) with two other inmates on a GS and a Strom. We passed a group of Boy Scouts and they looked at the other two bikes like they were something from another world...I got several thumbs up.
