Long live the Uly!
This evening, I rode my Barricade Orange 2006 XB12X to a little dealership in Connecticut, and after signing my name a bunch of times, I rode my 2008 Racing Red XB12XT home. It's SWEET. It's the bike I've been asking for bugging Erik about for years. It's going to sell like hotcakes (with Vermont Maple Syrup). If you enjoy traveling by motorcycle, you will absolutely LOVE riding the XT.
Oh, the shop I got it from really impressed me. They are very Pro-Buell. They're setting up a "stand alone" store with a good assortment of shirts, jackets and accessories, and they're going to stock some aftermarket accessories, as well. I gave them a sales pitch about becoming a Sponsor here, and I got them thinking about it. As I say, They're a small dealership, but they stock parts, have well trained mechanics and support the Marque. And they appreciate my business. That's a big plus.

Can you go over the actual differences - I mean in the ride. Its it more than a uly with sportier suspension?

Congrats! Which dealer did you get it from? I take it that your trading in your billion mile Uly for it. I would of bought it off you if i had the dough, as i know its the least abused Buell ever ridden, lol.

The differences are noticeable. The suspension feels different, obviously; but the forks feel like they have more turning radius. The engine seems to pull better than the '06; it also seems smoother. I only did about 100 miles on back roads, and I was being easy on the engine, since I'm breaking it in, but that's how it felt.
I don't like the seat as well as my Spencer modified '06 low seat. I'm not sure about the new Kickstand. When I kicked it out, it would bounce back up and I'd have to kick it down again.
The shorter suspension let me get one foot flat on the ground when stopped at a traffic light. That's a big plus.
It's a Uly; no mistake about it; but if you're not planning to ride dirt a lot, it's a better feeling Uly.
Now, I have to figure out what changes I'm going to make. Aprilia Tuono mirrors, a Bazootie, a Stebel Nautilus horn, some aux. lights, ceramic coat the exhaust, some paint on a few pieces...
For now, I'm just going to ride the piss out of it.

So, did you get a "deal" on this purchase?
Or did you pay the MSRP for this bike?
I've been unable to find any shop willing to let the bike go for lower than MSRP yet...

I did not get a discount. I paid MSRP, but I got a fair trade for my Uly. I was treated like a valued customer, and I am very happy with the deal I got.
This shop has supported Buell since at least 1999 when they put on a free feed for the American Thunderbike Club. They have repeatedly impressed me with their support of Buells. They have all the promotional give aways, and they don't treat Buell enthusiasts like second class citizens. When Erik was speaking in Boston, they sent two of their mechanics to hear him at fifty bucks a head.
I feel that if a shop is doing as much as they can to support the Brand, and they treat me like they honestly value my business, then they deserve a fair profit, and I'm the one getting a deal.

A good Buell enthusiastic dealership with good support & service that "gets Buell" is worth MSRP in my book.

Congrats on the XT!

I thought the XT has the same 54 degree steering lock as the '06 & '07 Uly?

Congrats on the new ride!

Great news Crusty! Now I don't know about the XT (because I haven't ridden one yet), but you are right on with the Racing Red...A very sexy color!

Congrats Crusty. If you think it pulls nicely, and smoothly now through mid range.........wait till you get some more miles on 'er.

The sidestand works fine, but there is a stop in the throw that's annoying. When it stops near perpendicular from the engine, push it a bit further and settle the bike backwards into it. I always go through this to make sure. The extended foot works awesome, even in soft ground. Ride on...

Congratulations on the new ride. The XT is a great bike. Lo, even I can get one foot on the ground at stops! Quite a change from my xb9sl though. I'm trying to work something out with a couple of lengths of 2 by 4 for stopping. Deployment is fine but I'm having trouble figuring out a way to get them to retract.

Congrats on the XT Crusty! Seems like our "exclusive club" of XT owners is growing quickly.

One question for ya'... You were able to get a discount since the dealer obviously couldn't get you a blue one. Right?

We're going to have to get good at classifying our posts: X = dual sport Uly, XT = touring Uly. What happens when they make a Uly Trike? XB12X3?

Congrats Crusty. Looking forward to hearing how it breaks in and the adventures you see with it. I too would like to see someone do a side hack, which I assumes means a side car.

I just got back from a couple of hours of twisted backroad riding, now I've had the chance to give the XT a better evaluation.
First off, the steering lock is the same as my '06 Uly. It felt like there was more side to side travel when I picked it up, but now that I've gotten over the initial excitement of getting a new bike, I don't feel any more or less turning radius than I had with my '06.
With the suspension set to factory recommendations for my weight, the XT feels a little stiffer than my '06 did. It's a cornering demon, and I wasn't pushing it at all 'cause I'm breaking it in. This surprised me, because I was really happy with the way my '06 handled; but the XT feels better yet.
I prefer the '06 Low seat to the new seat., and I prefer my '06 Low seat that was reworked by Spencer to the stock '06 Low seat. I have to find an Upholsterer who can replace the Barricade Orange material with Racing Red. (I know about Maximum's spray dye, but I'd rather just get the vinyl/naugahide/whatever replaced.)
The engine idles a lot rougher than my '06 did, but it runs and feels smoother once off idle. The new throttle cam profile is a Good Thing; low speed throttle transitions are much less jerky. The bike is much more comfortable at parking lot speeds.
The fan doesn't seem to run as long as the fan on the '06 did. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. The frame seems to get hotter than my '06, but that may be because it's still breaking in. Gas mileage is right around 40 MPG, which is what my '06 gave me until it had a few thousand miles on it.
I like being seated a little lower in low speed or stopped conditions. I don't notice any change in the way the wind feels with the taller windscreen. It seems neither better nor worse.
All in all, it feels good. I'm happy with my purchase.
And the Racing Red is gorgeous!

Thanks for the writeup noting the differences between the X and XT. I'm on the fence right now trying to decide which one to get. I'm going crazy trying to decide and I'm sure my indecision is driving my dealer crazy as well.

Congrats.
