Over here in the UK, there has been some heated debate on UKbeg, the UK Buell webside. Now I was/still am thinking of buying a FS Tensioner, but I was wondering if anyone across this side of the pond has any comments or experience with the FS Tensioner.

I bought two of them from Trojan and both of them stick (hang-up and don't return to the extended state). One more so than the other. I've got both of them set up with about 5 threads turned on the rod end adjuster screw just so they'll move at all. I sent a detailed e-mail to them regarding this well over a week ago and got no response at all. What's the deal with that??? If that's their customer service in action, don't buy one of these things......

There is a write up somewhere about the reasons Buell did it the way they did it. I read it several times and decided that their design was simpler, had no parts except the pulley and kept the belt tightened. The way I understood the article it also served as a part of the suspension.

The position of the tensioner and the movement of the swing arm allowed so little difference in length that it did not seem like a good investment buying the tensioner system.

I haven't read the article, but looking at the location of the tensioner and swingarm pivot, it seems that as the swingarm goes up, the tensioner applies less force to the belt. Also, as the swingarm goes up, the distance between the front and rear pulleys is increased. the two effects would tend to cancel each other out. I did not do any measurements, this is just eyeballing it...

Ok, so I wasn't pissed off before, but now I am. I just got home from work and checked the postmark on the boxes these units came in. These guys are saying that they've contacted everyone that bought one of these faulty units manufactured during the time frame noted.....well.....NOT!!! I bought two of them, one was sent out on March 18th the other on April 9th. I received no notice of this defect on either one of these purchases. I can't believe that even after sending them a message noting the issue (I was not even aware of the other web site..UKBEG...when I sent them my message) they have ignored my request for some info on how to rectify this. I would not buy another one of these things based on what I've got sitting in the garage right now. You'd think for $190, they provide some type of customer service vs. lies and made up facts......."Every customer who bought a belt tensioner betwen 1st March & 10th April has been individually contacted either by us, either by e-mail or telephone, regarding this issue." right.....

On the upside, adjusting your tensioner so it doesn't move makes it an even more effective device (***ducking***) : )

Trojan has a great reputation, keep trying, I have no doubt they will make it right.

Reep, good one.....I'm hoping that these tensioners will loosen up as they get used a bit. I think the design is sound, it's the execution that needs a little work......

That old spring loaded primary tensioner had the same problem... was the Hayden M6 tensioner or something?

The device is so simple and well made. Aside from spring failure, I don't know what could go wrong. Sorry for your troubles, but I'm glad it wasn't mine!

Matt is good people, I'm sure he will make things right.

I have the hydraulic version of the primary chain tensioner on my softail, 3 years of 10 lbs boost and no problems. I wish I could find one for the Uly primary. I would be all over that.

I've got about 43,000 miles on my 97 Electraglide with the Hayden primary tension installed since 5,000 miles and not a problem. Noticed the difference in shifting (more "snik" instead of "clunk") the moment I started it after I installed. Wish Harley would come up with a Sportster version like they have on the big twins.

This is all par for the course for me. It seems like if I order something (from anyone), I end up the the parts that fell off the truck . The tensioner on my kid's bike (the STT) seems to be working much better than mine. His actually moves up and down with the belt for the most part. The one on the ULY is really stiff and hangs up when it's compressed. Still haven't heard from the Trojan people........

I havejust seen this thread, as somebody has decided to post your response on UKBEG. i have not received any e-mails from you atall regarding this issue, notr have you replied to teh three requests tat I sent you asking for you to return the faulty tensioners. I don't know what the problem may be with communication, but please contact me at matt@mpurdy.wanadoo.co.uk rather than the work e-mail address in case that is the problem. We can have your tensioners modifed and returned in the post ASAP. I will even refund your postage cost.

Matt, good to finally hear from someone at Trojan. I was surprised that even after rattling some chains here, I hadn't heard something. Nope, never got any e-mails from you guys (even checked my spam/bulk folder) and my request/question to you on this was via your web site "contact" link so I don't have a record of exactly when it was sent (won't do that again). I will get back to you today off-line via E-Mail and we can get this taken care of. Thanks for the response.
