I picked up an '06 Uly (new from a dealer)a couple of weeks ago. I got the bags, heated grips, taller windshield and the little heat deflector gizmos under the seat. Thought I got a decent enough deal and was excited to get it home and try it out. All I can say is wow - what a cool bike. Tons of grunt, nimble, confidence inspiring and just plain cool.

Then I found this site and have been just amazed at the technical info and support available. I picked up a USB cable, deutsch connector and the ECMspy software. I got it hooked up and still can't get over how cheap and easy it is to have these kinds of tools at your disposal. Believe me, my son has a ZX14 and is very envious.

The ups are great, but there are a few downs. I see that Buell is giving away bags for free now. That's great, but man I just missed out and paid big bucks for those things. I'm just disappointed that I didn't get a better deal. I think I overpaid. Yeah, its my fault for not driving a better bargain, but it still sucks.

The other development is a freakin' oil leak. Okay, maybe not a leak, but a weep. Its at the base of the front cylinder. I've wiped it down once. The pic shows the stained area just below the gasket.

I hate the thought of the service dept tearing into my new bike. I just sucks that a brand new bike needs to be torn down for a crappy oil leak.

Anyway, sorry for the griping. Has anyone seen or had this type of oil leak?

Thanks,

-Russ

I see them on my BMWs all of the time ; )

Clean and degrease the area, I like Wesley's Bleche White, and see how things go. A "new" 06 has been sitting for a while, give it some time to see if the gasket (and O-rings??) will take up the slack after they've fully "woken up".

Synthetic oil is more "leaky". If the bike has synthetic, try switching to dino juice for a while.

If you think you paid too much consider this;
The bike is outside waiting patiently for you right now. It's calling to you. Can't you hear it? I can hear mine.

Absolutely Priceless.

Odyranger,
I feel your pain. If I had just waited 3 more years I could've got the 2009 model instead of settling for my 06, damm.it.

Electraglider -

that would have been a HUGE mistake. Everyone knows the 2010's will be MUCH better than the '09's!

Checked the mileage today, its actually 380.

I see them on my BMWs all of the time

I've had several bikes and haven't seen anything like this before. (Yeah they were all oriental).

The dealer had an open house today. I went down, sans bike since the weather wasn't good, and talked to a service guy. After talking it over, I decided to stop by with the bike next week and let them take a look. He assured me that if they needed to swap out a base gasket that it wouldn't be too big of a deal. At any rate, I'll probably wait for the 1k service.

He also told me that they just don't see the Buells back for service much. He said most of the "service" is to add a race ECM or a pipe.

I'm feelin' a lot better about the whole thing.

likely warranty will cover it if you do need a base gasket, but i doubt it, I've seen some xb owners with a leak here or there until about 1000 miles then it just seems to work itself out... likely what Mark_weiss says about gasket's.. Enjoy your uly I bought mine about a month ago and have put on about 1600 miles on it so far.. one oil leak caused by me doing my own oil change and not tightening the filter tight enough.. thats it.. oh and that freaking horn rattle.. :P but thats an easy fix

I had some minor seeping at the top end. Just cleaned it up one time, after about 2,000 miles. I now have 9500 miles and no seeping at all, other than a very slight misting around the connector to the oil cooler.
