It's already become annoying (as I knew it would) to have the clock and odometers combined in a single display. It's also annoying to have that display blocked by the clutch cable and to have to reach over to cycle the display.

I was thinking of trying to source a small (hopefully waterproof) microswitch and mounting it in the left control, somewhere in the area of the low/high beam selector. I would then run a wire to the factory display selector switch in a "piggy back" fashion. That way, I could more easily change the display with just my left thumb while under way.

The factory switch appears to be integral to the printed circuit that comprises the entire instrument cluster, so ordering another factory switch isn't feasible (picture stolen from Fatty...thanks Fatty : ).

Thoughts?

Easy solution - Put GPS on your bike : )

Cheaper easy solution - $2 kmart watch, strap to handle bar.

Cheapest easy solution - Do nothing, and press the damn cycle button. : )

Thanks Froggy. Already have a GPS and I'd like to get creative with a solution.

But your recommendations are duly noted.

ok...i have found a couple possible switches, i just need to investigate how much room is in the left switch housing to see if it will fit. and i need to verify the operation of the factory switch. i assume it is normally open. if so, the potential switch is under $4.00 ea.

Good deal Sleez! I was also planning put the Autoswitch power indicator LED in the left housing.

Hopefully there's room for both.

Great minds think alike...

I just was thinking of this the other day, would be nice to cycle the display from the left grip.

Count me in!

Or better yet... Heads-up display in the helmet! Now that would be cool! maybe too much for now : )

i found another cool switch that is all contained and waterproof, only thing is it is larger ( 1.6" x .8" ) but can come with a bracket that will zip tie around the handlebar. or it may velcro to the spot on the left switch housing???? good thing about it, is it comes with wires. i will look into both these options and post later.

here is a pic of the waterproof switch;

around $20.00.

I used a black zip-tie on the clutch cable, tied it to the handlebar crossbar. It's still about an inch from the bar, but clears the display nicely now.

How about using the High beam flasher switch for this?

That might work.

Here's switch manipulator:

Fail safe. Simple. Waterproof. Integrated.

Erik would approve.

Moto Guzzi has a switch for the same purpose in the left control housing; along with high/low beam, horn, turn signal, etc. Maybe it would be easier and neater to adapt the whole housing to the Buell.

Interesting idea.

Got a picture of the Guzzi left control housing? Is it the same on all models?

The one that I saw was on a Breva 1100. I believe, but don't know for certain, that the Norge has the same switches. The Breva 750 has a set up similar to Buell's. I don't know about other models. I'll try to swing by the local Guzzi dealer's this weekend and get a look.

Keep us posted Crusty.

Sounds like an elegant solution if it can be made to work.

That would make for a pretty slick setup...By the way Tipsy, sorry I didn't make it last night, I was called in to work overtime at work, and couldn't pass up the money. My hours now require me to work Tuesday nights, hopefully we can catch up somewhere.... want to check out your new bike

Man
I was thunking the very same thing..almost consider giving up my high-beam flash switch. Here's one we've used at work that has good tactile feedback and reasonably small:

might be a tad overkill tho'

No problem Chopped. I know how it is. The phone rang about 20 minutes ago from crew scheduling trying to get me to come in for time and a half. I was tempted to answer, but I'd rather have the days off.

I'm off until Tuesday, so if you wanna ride between now and then, let me know!

That one looks like it might work Seka...assuming it fits. Looks like it might be too deep, but it's hard to tell.

I have to say...I'm enamored with the Moto Guzzi idea. I wonder what that control unit sells for.

i'll look into the guzzi option, i imagine it won't be cheap, and will most likely require modifying the buell harness/connectors.

I agree it probably won't be cheap, but I'm not too worried about the connectors. We could either splice the connectors off of our existing control or just get some new ones and fit them to the Guzzi control.

I don't have a parts manual yet, so I'm not sure what connectors are on the factory Buell control but other than the dealership, J&P Cycles has a good selection of Deutsch connectors.

checked with my guzzi dealer, p/n 977522 is $117.04, special order, fits 08 1100 Breva, with 7/8" bar. it does have a pigtail, so pinning it out should be doable! but will it be worth it???? i have to think on this.

if someone wants to buy me one, i'll do a full write up and make whatever harness mods are needed!!!

thought so...lol

Sleez...thanks for the leg work! Good information! Maybe I'll put some feelers out to some salvage type places and pick one up if a wrecked bike is being parted out. It sure would be an elegant mod!

Or maybe I'll just be impulsive and buy it new. My only hesitation would be warranty issues since a piggy-back will have to be soldered to the back of the instrument cluster printed circuit board???
