Background: Despite what the owners manual states, the accessory sockets on the '08 Uly are not live when the key is in the "park" position. I posed the question to my dealer this morning and got the following response. I've substituted names with [our Buell tech]:

[our Buell tech] has been working and researching this all day. He said the 2008 models voltage outlets to include the 1125R operate off of the ground from the bikes ECM.
He pulled a 08 X model in the back and the outlet jacks didn’t respond at all. He found that if the bike was in the run/on position or actually running they worked. He also found that if the battery voltage drops below 11.9 volts that the ACC outlets will not work. None of this makes any sense to us because if you pulled off somewhere to spend the night (outdoors) and wanted to charge your cell phone or use your GPS you wouldn’t be able to without the right amount of volts.

So, the bottom line is there is nothing wrong w/ your bike. The system feature is designed to maintain the battery’s charge. [our Buell tech] stated his research contradicts the owners manuals for 2008. He also said that the 2006 and 2007 models are not like this and accurate with what the owners manual show.

Also found is that this new “feature” is on all 2008 Buell XB and 1125R models which partly make sense because for the first time ever you can get heated grips installed on all models and they are wired in through the ACC of each bike.

[our Buell tech] has put out some calls to Buell and also called [one of our previous service techs] who you remember worked here and was our Buell guy for info. He is going to call the factory for us to see if there is a way to hard wire a relay or ground as so the ACC will work when in Park mode. The reason [our Buell techs] want to figure this out is they believe they will start getting X and XT owners wanting it done to their bikes.

I am not a technician and this may all seem more clear if you feel more comfortable calling our service department and asking for [our Buell tech]and have him explain it in his own words. I hope I was of some help."

So net/net: I wasn't crazy. At the very least, this should have been caught during the edit of the '08 owners manual.

Props to my dealer (American Eagle HD/Buell) for taking the time to check on this and offering a detailed explanation. Hopefully someone besides me will find this info to be helpful - before they realize that their cellphone is not charging.

cheers!

Makes sense to me.
Charging a battery from another battery is generally not a good idea unless you're desperate.
I used to charge my CD player in my car while I was at work since the CD charger was only 200mA.
Problem was it was all day and over the course of a year, I killed my battery off.
Vehicle batteries aren't too good at charging/discharging.

No argument there. But I can see instances where it would be nice to at least have the choice of being able to use the socket without having to switch on the complete ignition system. I'm not clear why Buell just couldn't implement a "virtual switch" that would disable the sockets if the key was in "park" and the voltage fell down to the 11.9 volt level.

In any event, I'm glad to get clarification and I'll stop my bitchin' and moaning.

For now.
