Question for all you more experienced Buellers out there: I've seen some plastic covers for the Uly headlights. (touratech being one supplier) with the standard disclaimer "not for on road use". Plus the plastic just doubles the dirt, and further reduces the light output. Was wondering if any of you have tried to fashion a wire grille (like part # 044-0330 in the 08 touratech on line catalog - or page 259 in the 08 paper edition) similar to those that are available for the R1200GS. Thinkin it couldnt be too difficult to fabricate one over the popoff, relatively useless, boulder guard they the put on the Uly. So far havent been able to find the wire mesh to work with. If anyone has an idea where to procure some, let me know. I'll figure out how to secure it - got some ideas but need to make some prototypes. I'll 'share' if I have any success. Is winter over ?! Global warming aint hit Washington state yet. Thanks all. John

Go to Home Depot and get some gutter leaf guard mesh.

Thanks Ratbuell - will see what gutter guards can do to deflect the smaller rocks.

Why not get some of the plastic film if you're worried about light quality and better impact protection? This stuff:

There are tons of suppliers, just google for 3m headlight film. You might have to get some and trim it yourself, easy enough with our extremely basic lights. I'm guessing the stuff is on ebay for a few bucks (plus a few more for shipping).

Don't stick gutter mesh in front of your headlights, that will hurt light quality big time as it will not only reduce light output but it will also increase glare for oncoming vehicles. The 3M film will do a fine job of protecting the lights without any adverse effects except for a couple of extra bucks spent. It'll also look a lot less goofy than hardware store gutter guard stuck onto your bike. ; )

Ok, here's an idea I have but haven't tried yet:
Why not use 1/2" rabbit wire, that you can get at any ag/feed store. Make a form; using 1/2" plywood cut a piece out the size/shape of the headlight, then use the cutout piece (maybe sanded and rounded on the corner slightly) and put a circle of the rabbit wire on the big piece, and place the cutout over it. Mash together/jump up and down on it. Take it out, check the fit (adjust hole/cutout size accordingly or bend the wire so it fits right). Trim the edges with tin snips or dykes (cutters!) or even a couple of the connecting pieces to make a rectangle out of a square like the piaa covers have, then paint it black. Or have it powdercoated if you want it to look pretty longer. I think if it's done right it should snap right on. May have to fashion a retention device out of a small spring or something. I would offset it 1/4" from the lens, so it doesn't scratch it when it vibrates, and so if a rock hits it there's a bit of flex-space before the lens is hit. Sounds crude but I think it might look OK if done right!

Update: Bought 45 sqft of black, relatively tough, plastic waskel wabbit wire today- & here i am fresh out of rabbits! Anyway, it didnt come in anything smaller. I will fashion a guard out of the stuff on the outside of the stock pop on frame and see how it turns out. If it works, and anyone wants a few sq ft, I'd be glad to share. I'll post pics when I get er done.
