Not a 08, but my 06 with 07 map and open air box ... started with 42 mpg and now with TPS reset and ignition timing reset and tires pumped to 36/38 psi, obo at 1000 miles, I am getting 45-48 mpg. With the engine breaking/running in and keeping up engine tune/maintnece I see mpg going up. I am sure this is true with the 08.

Chas - you say 06 with "07 map" - did you just put in a stock 07 ECM? I may have to look at that...

Ratbuell, most people that have the 07 map had it done by bringing it to the dealer and having the ECM reflashed. It can be done with ECMspy too.

Smpl5 ;
Airframe drag.

I can really notice a drop in fuel mileage when I put all my bags on. Do you have bags on yours. My mileage climbed to a high of 49 without bags and after break in. Now it's down to 42 on the highway with bags with the Micron Pipe, and a fat MAP from American Sport Bike .

My fuel light would come on at 129 miles when I first bought it. The max has been 179 miles.

Bearly - that's my experiment right now. Last tank was 38 with all three bags (bone stock '06, <350 miles); this tank is in process with only the top box attached. It definitely "feels faster" during highway roll-on passes, so I can only hope MPG will be better as well.

Bearly,

I don't have bags (yet). The bike is bone stock. The only things that make sense to me are: the newness of the bike, ethanol (I have been using 91 octane from Sunoco), and that I encounter a fair amount of city and stop-and-go traffic on some days. But it is also mixed with highway and back road travel, so it is hard for me to imagine that it would have such an impact.

3rd fill up today - 35MPG. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!! My '06 got 45+ MPH right out of the gate and I got as high as 52, full bag set and all...

Further more, this poor mileage means you better be looking for a station when the light comes on. With every new bike, I do a "controlled run out of gas" so I know exactly how far I can go once the light comes on. Exactly 30 miles on the '08, giving a 150 mile range on tank. So, this is what we get with the new engine... same HP with 10+ MPG degradation in fuell economy. I am still in break in so I haven't really let her rip yet, but I don't get the feeling it is any stronger than my '06.

When I travel with my "Ultra" buddies this summer, they will have a field day with my 150 mile range... This is crazy!

My mileage is getting worse the more miles I put on it. I started out close to 40 (at 0 miles on the odometer), but its slipping towards 30 fast (1800 miles).

Not sure what is going on, but it runs fine all the time. I figured with warmer weather it would get better mileage.

Third tank on my 06, bag-less, 41mpg. "Less-than-gentle" riding style, mixed commuting and twisties. Total miles right around 700 now.

Gonna have to ask the guys about the '07 flash. Does it give better MPG, or better drivability, or...?

If I cruise in the 3000-4000 RPM range I get low 40's.

I found that if I mostly cruise in a lower range or higher range I get 50+ mpg

What of the changes would account for no better hp, but worse mpg? No gearing changes. It would seem the fuel is not being burned as efficiently. Surely it is not running richer. I'm not getting this.

Just had a few more numbers to this post:

I have a 08 Uly purchased mid November in 07. I have managed to put on 3.4K during the winter here in Colorado. I commute when possible in town. So to date my total average is 39.95 MPG. On road trips my average will be 42 - 47 MPG. In town 35 - 38. On the road I ride with the stock hard bags. Oh yea... one incrediable bike!!!

45 mpg. That is on work and back duty as a daily driver, mostly at idle in traffic with WOT sprints to 120 in the mornings.

I am working with my tuner on a hybrid fuel/timing eeprom that we hope will yield good manners in traffic, with better fuel economy down low and kick azz power when you wind it up high.

I have the same problem with my 08,my 06 got easily 10mpg more than this hog. It has been to the dealer twice. I drive no different&now have 5500miles on it now. My question is this what is Buell going to do about it? It would be nice to know cos I really like this bike.

Has anyone monitored their fuel pressure? I know that the 07 XL883 regulator had a defective O-ring and was replaced on my sportster. At about 1k I noticed a drop in fuel mileage and took it to the dealer. Having read the TB over at XLForums about the problem I insisted they do the repair under warranty. (actually i whined, stamped my feet and held my breath) After the repair I went from 40mpg up to 49 in the city. I wonder if something similar is happening to the Uly?

08 Ulysseses - 1950 miles - 41 MPG today. 10% ethanol.
But it pulls like a freight train, and slow speed work is significantly better than what I hear from 2006/07 owners. It will putt along at 10 MPH just fine.

So I think it runs better/richer than the previous year models, it just uses more gas.

I haven't seen any maps, but I'd suspect they finally "cured" the factory "lean" condition. Pure conjecture though.

I've got a 2006, usually get mid 40's at home in North Dakota but when I take it into the Black Hills and when I went to Colorado with it last summer I got mid 50's. Seems to like a little altitude.

Question for the 08 Ulys is how many miles are you getting until the light comes on?

I can understand the richer running smoothing out the ride but the tank size is fixed so this may knock down the range a little.

I just got back from a lil' Saturday afternoon joy ride. I got 45 mpg the first leg running with a strong tail wind and doing 70 mph quite a bit. Then I turned around and got 52 riding mostly 55-60 mph with some 70 mph against the wind! The first leg had more stop-and-go traffic, the second leg was almost all highway.

I just got back from a trip to Ft Knox, KY from Akron, OH, and cruised at @ 3500 RPM/68-70mph and averaged 60mpg for the 2 fillups(each way) that I did, start and mid-way. Fuel light came on after 180. '06 stock. total weight w/ rider was @ 350lbs. Bags stacked behind me on the seat. 19k at the start of the trip. I have been averaging high 40s during regular commuting. I am still ear to ear happy with it.

'08 Uly with 2K miles, 38 mpg is best so far, 135 miles and the light comes on.
I wonder how much the luggage affects mileage? Anybody getting 45+ mpg while riding with the luggage?

My average on my 06 has been around 48 but I have seen in upwards of 56mpg. Just had a tps reset along with a timing and afv adjustment and went out with my sportbike buddies ripping the curvy mountain roads and got 53.6 over 140 miles. I am pretty hard on my bike and don't baby it, so I have been completely satisfied with these numbers. Also on longer trips with sustained speeds I have noticed 2 up gets better mileage.
