I have about 40-50 commute rides on my 08 Uly since purchasing it 2 months ago. Every time I arrive at work or home I coast the last twenty feet or so after shutting off the switch on the handlebars. The fan has only come one once (it's been fairly cold and I don't stop during my commute). Today I couldn't coast in due to a blocking truck so I rode into the parking spot and turned off the key. The fan kicked in right away. My question is.. is there any corelation between shutting the ignition at the bars vs the key? Made me wonder.......

Yes and no. With the key off the fan comes on at a dif temp then with the key on. Once the key is off I don't think that it matters what the sequence was in getting to key off.

Mine is the same as yours. Fan doesn't kick in if you use the kill switch. I always shut the bike down with the key so the fan will kick on and cool off the back cylinder / head and not cook the oil.

The manual doesnt state which is the proper method for shutting down the bike so I am going with the stealth mode unless I think the bike is really hot....

From the '08 Owners manual:

The engine OFF/RUN switch turns the ignition power on or off. The engine OFF/RUN switch is located on the right handlebar control. Push the top portion (9) of the engine OFF/RUN switch to turn off ignition power and shut the engine off. Push the bottom portion (8) of the engine OFF/RUN switch to turn on ignition power.
NOTES:

* The engine OFF/RUN switch must be in the RUN position (8) to start or operate the engine.
* The engine OFF/RUN switch should be used to shut the engine off.

My fan kicks on when shutting down the bike with the kill switch.

I believe someone found out a year or so ago that if you cycle either switch, the fun will shut off instantly. I.E.- the bike's running, you cut it off, the fan comes on, you switch the ignition back on, the fan will shut off and stay off when you switch the ignition back off. It's a way to force the fan to shut off if you REALLY need to, but it defeats 50% of the purpose of the fan (preventing oil from "coking" in the rear cylinder head).

"My fan kicks on when shutting down the bike with the kill switch."

Mine too.

I always shut off using the kill switch if for no other reason than the key is in such a stupid position.

The fan on my '06 Uly runs after the Ig switch is turned off, regardless of how the engine was stopped or whether the engine stop switch is on or off.
The fan usually wails on hi speed for less than a minute, then up to 10 minutes, at low speed, before shutting off.

I've found the fan duty cycle to be illogical and contrary to how I think it should operate. But that's a whole other discussion...

My 06 Uly does not always run the fan when powered off by my memory. I use the kill switch by habit.

This happened today when I had been on a warm ride and stopped for about 20 minutes. The bike was still warm when I started it again and I just rode it across the street to an ice cream shop. The bike was still warm when I started it and the fan did not cycle on when I hit the kill switch on reaching the other side of the street. Probably ran for less than 5 minutes total.

It is possible that I hit the key instead of the kill switch but I doubt it.

All that being said, I would eagerly pay for a mod (ie larger oil cooler) that significantly reduced the fan action or noise at least.

I think I've tried all the mods reported on BadWeb. The only one guaranteed to work is "The (Big Mouth) Right Side Scoop".
See this thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/224426.html?1157060224

The scoop you want is the one that mirrors the stock left scoop. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/9160F.html

I went with the low profile scoops, another case of out smarting myself, to be different. http://www.trojan-horse.co.uk/prods/194.html
And, I can report they don't do jack; but they look cool and will not smolder when the engine is running for a long while, when parked.
