I know this is one of those hotly debated topics, but just thought I'd see what you guys have been paying:

The ride home has left my new-to-me Uly with just shy of 1000 miles. Normally, I like to try to do as much maintenance myself as possible, but being that I live in a tall apartment building, it normally requires quite a bit of planning (as in, whose garage can I mooch some space from : ) That, and the fact that my block will will be closed today for the PopeMobile motorcade (isn't there enough traffic already in NYC?) has left me wanting to bring the bike in for the 1000 miles service for peace-of-mind.

I just called a local, well known, sponsor Buell dealership and was told I could bring the bike in for a while-I-wait 1000 mile service with "my choice of dino or synthetic oil" for $220...though I neglected to ask if the price was the same for dino or synthetic.

For the record, the seller told me he did a 50 mile oil change and used Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 (gold cap), which is what I'd been using in my Bandit.

Archives report some 1000 miles services as high as $3000 (for a fluid change???) so I guess $220 isn't crazy. I realize labor is nearly $100 per hour these days.

What say you?

Tipsy

I think I paid about $50 for the TPS reset (which you don't need) and a good once over that included a clutch adjustment.

I was close to 1000 miles and couldn't get an appointment for a week or more so I bought the oil(Syn3), filter and gaskets and changed the fluids myself. So all told I think I paid about $95 (including the $50 above).

I can't say I'm cheap it's just that the maintenance is easy and it's more convenient for me to do it when I want at home.

Tipsy,
With the 50 mile oil change I'd wager that the previous owner subscribed to the Motoman break-in
I can't imagine that you'd need much of any service at 1000 miles except to change fluids. Do it yourself. Also check the primary chain tension and adjust if necessary. Remember that if you do decide to get reamed to twice your normal diameter by having a dealer change your oil, that you've been forewarned and that you should not complain of the overwhelming pain that will ensue upon payment.

Pretty convenient and not too bad IMHO - also will help to start building the relationship with the dealer. AND, while you are waiting you can shop for some sporty orange and black motorcycle outfits...

One thing we do get in UK is the first service at 1000 miles is while-you-wait and it is FREE!!!!!!!!

If the Motorman break-in is the beat-the-piss-out-of-the-bike break in, then yes...he did mention that he was familiar with that method : )

I think I'm going to go ahead and bring it in simply from a logistics stand point. If I had my own garage space (not the parking spot I pay way too much for) I'd be out there right now getting mechanically familiar with the Uly. But I've read good things about this particular dealership from a Buell perspective, so I figure I'll see how they are first hand.

Incidentally, this is the same dealership where I did the Uly test ride late last year during the Buell Openhouse. The sales guys sitting under the tent wasn't at all impressive in his "'08 Uly's are pretty much the same as the '07's except for the new blue" lack of knowledge, but service is a different animal, so I won't let a first impression be a lasting one.

Electraglider...believe me, I'm having to talk myself into bringing it in. But I simply have no place to do the work here in NYC.

Any Uly riders in the NYC are want to offer up some future garage wrenching space?

I paid $320 (synthetic would have been higher) and was without the bike for a week) for the 1K service. $270 of it was for the 3 hours of labor at $90/hour. Some guys who did their own reported about 1 hour on average. My local dealer's greed and shortsightedness cost him my future business unless it's a warranty deal, which I've already had on the broken clutch cable wireform and fried clutch cable. Others here paid around $190 for the 1K service or gotten it free as part of the purchase. I can't believe something is cheaper in New York City than in SC! (Our state motto is Thank God for Louisiana!)

They're actually in NJ...about 30 minutes out of NYC. But the train is 50 yards from their front door, so it makes dropping off the bike a non event.

Enjoy that warm weather in the "low country!"

NEW CASTLE HD

Just got my 1,000mile service today. I paid $207 for dino oil. He even checked the static timing as well, and repalced my wire form clutch cable thingy.

The best part was he quoted me $235 over the phone and $235 when i arrived at the service dept. today - but charged me $207. When does that happen... the Buell tech 'Rob' was the race mechanic when they raced. A very cool cat.

The dealer was great: New castle HD in New castle, Pa (NW of Pittsburgh)... they raced Buells a few years back, and 7 of the 22 employees ride Buells. I arrived early this AM and it was great seeing all of these Buells (love the S3) being ridden to work ... yup, all seven rode to work today.

The shop mngr gave me a tour of their collection, several racing Buells ( a pristine Battle Twin) and cafe-type sportys.

It made my day.

Oh Yeah, almost forgot ... the Buell tech said that about one-half of all the Uly's getting the rear tire replaced, need new 'rear wheel bearings'... imagine that?

.

I purchased my Uly in Dothan Alabama back in January 2007...and they did my 1,000 mile service for free. I was not expecting that, so it was a very nice surprise to be given an invoice that read "Charged to Sales, $0.00 due".

My first Buell is an 08 Uly so I am learning as I go. I prefer to do my own maintenance and document everything. Keep receipts of all purchases... oil, etc. I use stock filter and Mobil-1 15/50. I already have Koyo bearing ready to install, just waiting for Avon Distanzias (shipped from AZ on Thursday). Probably a good thing as nearest dealers are 2 hours away.
