Hey all, looking for some help with my Uly 06. She doesnt fire up on the first try in the mornings...The motor will fire, and then die after 1-2 chugs..after that, unless I assist with the throttle, she doesnt want to fire up. As if its flooded. Does this sound like its time for new plugs? Maybe they have become fouled from the priming from trying to start it up a couple times? As well, the motor doesnt seem to idle as steady as she used to before the winter.... Any help would be great. All the best, Jack | ||

This could be a combination of minor issues. What are the stats for your bike? (miles, winter prep, time in storage) Did you put any fuel stabilizer in the tank before storage? According to the manual for services, how close are you to time to change the plugs? The fouling possibility sounds real enough to check your plugs. The front is the easiest to pull and check. Put a tender/charger on it to maintain the battery. Good luck with the diagnosis. | ||

10,000 KM As far as storage goes, I didn't stabilize the gas for this winter, because I rode the motorcycle quite a bit through the winter...The fuel never went more than 1 1/2 months in the tank, and I dont even think It went that long... I had the plugs changed about 1500km's ago, so I figured there should be no problems with them. Could the winter cold here in Canada been hard on the plugs? | ||

How many times did you go for a short jaunt and then when you turned off the engine the fan did not come on? When that fan fails to come on after the ride, it didn't get warm enough and that "may" not be to great on the plugs. Also, throttle blipping at stop lights messes with the EMC and will foul plugs. If you're a blipper then you'd better cure yourself of that ailment. | ||

In the winter it gets pretty chilly here. I was riding in -20C on dry days...and the fan would not come on at all... Im hopeful its just the plugs... | ||

My new '06 does that, 800 miles (in 10 days) and climbing. If it's real cold, it just fires..dies...fires and runs. I think it's the nature of the beast (or it's trying to tell us "hey dummy, it's cold out - get in a car" LOL). | ||

Mine usually does the two-chug on the first start up(cold) and fires up perfectly on second hit of the yellow button. Did you mention giving it throttle on second attempts? I don't think you're supposed to mess with the throttle during start up, first or second. What do your plugs look like? | ||

Absolutely NO THROTTLE on any start attempt. Make a fist with one finger poking out for the starter, just to fight the urge...lol. (My other three are all carb'd) On a DDFI Buell, throttle at startup = Spark Plug Adventure  | ||

thanks for the help everyone. So, I think Id like to try changing the plugs. Feel free to laugh at me but I dont know how to change my plugs...Ive never done it before, its always been the mechanic doing it. Any instructions with pics of the job? How do you get to the rear cyl plug? Which plugs are best to use? Any precautions? | ||

First, spend the $60 on a manual. The front you will need to pull the scoop and it is right there ready for a wrench. The rear I pull the entire air box off and you will need a socket, swivel, and extension. Always put new plugs in by hand and tighten after the threads have been started at least five good turns. To get the boots off a long pair of needle nose pliers will do the trick. Be careful as you don't want to rip the rubber insulation on the wires. |
