Hello all. Maybe this has been talked about before but I dont spend much time on this site. I'd rather be out ridding. anyways I do a'lot of long distance two up ridding with my lady and was wondering if its possible to upgrade the stator for more output. we both enjoy using electric jackets, comm system, GPS, PIAA fog lights, etc. when everything is on it drains the battery. if the aux lights are off I can run everything else but I like to keep the lights on even in the day time for better safety.
any advise?

Replace your PIAA's with HID's like these?

They only draw a few watts each and are self contained.

im going to do a HID main headlight high beam. I dont want to run HID aux lights because I have already broken off a couple while ridding off road and also when I crashed last december when I hit some ice. I'm interested in having the stator rewound like I did on my dirt bike but I dont know it its possible on the Buell. I would like to see another 100watts if that possible.

I think that's a great idea, but I'm no electrical genius, and that might be difficult.

From what I've read here the regulators can be overtaxed by the stock stator's output, it's been suggested that more load (to a point) allows the regulator to process more power from the stator without the deadly heat resulting from regulating down to protect the system, preventing it from killing itself. I don't think hiding behind the front wheel and 2" from the front jug and in the blast from the oil cooler helps much either IMHO.

A bulletproof voltage regulator mounted in nice cooling airflow would probably help.

Maybe talk to these guys:

Hopefully I won't kill my stator, but I think burning off the all the power our stator puts out would be a good thing.

I can run my heated vest on high (13x watts), heated grips (3x watss on high), PIAA 510's (110 watts), GPS (maybe 5 watts if that), charge my cell phone (10 watts - guess) and my ipod (another 10 watts) and nothing dims...though my little handy dandy voltage meter will indicate that I am not getting a full charge at stop lights...but the Uly has plenty of power to spare.

Considering my SV is lucky to run the vest on low and heated grips at the same time. But then again, the total the system on the SV puts out is only 330watts with most of that being needed to run the bike.

I love my Uly and it's stator...As long as it keeps truckin'

Just curious, is the stator a "y" wound or "delta"wound?

The voltage regulator and overall system design is going to be your problem.

The voltage regulator shunts unused power back into the stator windings. The peak power is limited by the redline of the engine. At peak there is too much power to be fully utilized unless you are running EVERYTHING all at once all the time.

The system simply can not handle the excess power. It will burn the stator up in a hurry.

This is one of the reasons the 08 stator produces less power than the 06 and 07. They also went from a three phase to a single phase system.

Unless you plan on running a Jacob's Ladder during the summer, you are going to have issues winding a hotter stator.

ok, thanks for the info. wouldn't it be possible to upgrade the stator and the voltage regulator at the same time. there are a'lot of bikes that have a much larger charging output and they seem to run just fine. I sent a email to www.electrosport.com but they haven't responded. im surprised no one on this site has tried this upgrade yet.

ok so I got a email back from www.electrosport.com today and this is what it says-
Hi,

If there anyway you can send me a picture of your OEM stator and Reg along with dimensions of both.

Best Regards,

Trent Kirby

Does anyone by chance have a picture of the stator by chance. Im not about to pull mine all apart just for a photo. however if I can do a upgrade I will for shure do it right away.

911,

I'm sure you could upgrade both the stator and vr. You'd need to make sure that any additional wiring harness that runs between them is upgraded as well.
