Went to a Harley-Buell dealer to pick up some syn 3 and Formula+ to change out my oils. The condescending beano at the parts desk tells me I don't need to remove my clutch inspection cover to change out the oil or check the level, just drain and add a liter WTF.... Then tells me Loctite doesn't exist any more and I am an idiot to use it. Man, Buell has got to get out of that place, everybody stalking around dressed in black, with big arms, a goatee and scowl on there face! No fun to be had there....

Sorry, had to vent a bit, I have been reading about folks on this forum having bad experiences at dealerships, now I understand...

I don't always remove the clutch inspection cover. I fill through the smaller plate. You don't really need to check the level. It requires one quart. Unless it's leaking out, you're fine.

Did you ask him if they have any of the new service manuals since the "old" ones state that loctite is required. : D

Good Lord! where do they find these neanderthals? But, on the other hand, it can be just as bad a BMW dealer, they think all HD product is sh*t and you have to have sh*t for brains to ride one. And Goldwing techs think there isn't another touring bike made. Oh and did i mention Hayabusa guys think it's the only performance bike on the planet! I don't think I need to go on, but I could. I have tried very hard to remember the important thing is not what someone rides, but that they ride! We should all try to remember that the reason there are hundreds of different models is that there are hundreds of different budgets/styles/tastes/preferences, etc. etc. and try to remember what we hve in common...We all love to be in the wind, on two!

Yo Ft, interesting.... I thought you had to confirm the level by sighting thru the clutch cover, cool if you don't have to. Don't have much of a choice now, only picked up the bigger gasket. Actually, Cali, if you find a good Buell fanatic he or she most likely agrees with your last statements! Cheers to this well informed, fairly unbiased forum! }

Hey Supertoon,
I've changed my primary lube several times and never needed to replace either gasket.
Just keep them clean and unless you break the gasket it works fine for re-use. Mine has never leaked.

The gaskets last a long time...on my Harley I have not changed it in 5 years.. The ULY has 37K plus miles on the original gaskets...no leaks. Very simple... if it is not leaking don't change it...Use the top hole for the trans/clutch oil, drain out the oil, squirt in a quart and be done..too easy. Buell would be happier if you bought a gasket for every oil change.

Super.....I will reuse the gaskets if they are ok. With that said I have one of each on hand just in case. They are inexpensive

Probably a little like the muffler straps, the Manuel states you MUST replace the front strap after re-installing the muffler. I changed pipes twice and am still on the original strap. (Shite, now I've jinxed it, probably fly off, muffler and all, on the next ride and kill a protected species...)

First couple of trans oil changes I did I was anal about it. Dribble some oil in, check, a little more, check again, and again, etc. Until I realized that a complete drain and refilled with a quart is just right. Just wipe off the gaskets and reuse as long as you can feel them slow the screws down when tightening the covers.

Loctite stuff isn't available everywhere, including my purchasing HD dealer. I couldn't believe I had to order common maintenance materials, so I didn't.

The Permatex brand from what I gather is the same stuff. Part #56521 Thread Sealant for the drain plugs (looks a lot like Loctite part #565, doesn't it?) has worked fine for me for two years.

The front strap? Maybe a legal thing, one strap, no backup like at the back. If it cracks unnoticed and the header loosens to the muffler you could be in a world of hurt if the muffler drops at the front. That said I've reinstalled mine several times but recently replaced it.

The HD tech who did my sidestand recall repair reinstalled my original front strap and left the kitted new one on his parts counter. Guess he didn't think knowing Buells was important enough to follow the recall procedure to the letter...

That's funny since most of our accessory kits that have new fasteners come with the little "hotel-size" Loctite sample tube...check with your techs, most of them have a drawer or jar full of the little buggers. I keep a gallon jug of the tubes on hand at home "just in case".

Wasn't it posted here a guy had reused his strap, it failed and he was high sided off the bike. He's about $40,000 into his medical bills and still not done. :-(

I think I'd be safety wiring that front just for peace of mind.
